Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Bias tire has a ply rating of 6 and a 1,870-lb maximum load at 50 psi. The 14" diameter x 6" wide steel trailer wheel features a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and a corrosion-resistant galvanized finish.

Ordered tire and rims together. The tires look good but the rims are very poor quality. Won’t be ordering again. Costs over $XXX to return so I guess I’m stuck with them. Probably hard to see in the photo but the galvanized rim that I bought is much thinner than the original rim.

Purchased this as a replacement for my spare tire on my boat trailer. To match the other tires I wished to have an exact replacement. It took a fair amount of searching to get specs to match, particularly the Load Range. This tire matched perfectly and was delivered within a couple days. The only concerned was the price was higher than some others. Thanks

This looks like a great tire. It gets good reviews, that 's the reason I purchased it. But I can't give it a great usage review because it's going to be a spare for my boat trailer. The best review I could give it would mean I had trouble on the road and needed to put into service. Here's to hoping I never need to use it! :-)

I did notice that the date code puts it's manufacture at the end of 2014 but I can live with that since it puts it on a par with the tires I have on the trailer now. And unless your willing to go to the tire store yourself and look at the dates yourself your at the mercy of the merchant. An unseen tire that's only a little over a year old is not bad.

Would have been nice to get a new tire that wasn't already two years old. Only got 5-6 years to start with

Nice looking tires and wheels. Looking forward to using them next year.

Excellent customer service and fast shipping. The wheel and tire package fit perfectly and performed great on a recent 16hr road trip traveling at highway speeds of 75mph or more.

arrived sooner than I expected! Everything was perfect and the wheels and tires looked great on my old sailboat trailer.

Randall G.

These wheels and tires have been on my boat trailer for about a year. I have towed it from Charleston to Pensacola and back as well as to the harbor several times. I am extremely pleased with my purchase. Price was great, shipping was great and the product is great. Thank you!

Great service tires and wheels look great. Best Deal out there

Tires have performed good. still look good after many miles to the beach and back.

Old tires and rims off and new tires and rims on in 20 minutes

so far they are working great. Thanks for the awesome customer service

Tire and wheel is as expected but until I put some milage on it can’t attest to its quality. I bought it for the value and loadstar’s decent reputation

I was looking for new tires for my boat trailer and a friend recommended etrailer. I ordered four tires and rims and they showed up a day ahead of schedule. I placed my order on a Friday night at 9 PM and they were shipped by 11:00 that same night. The prices were great, what more could you want. It's the first time I used them but I would highly recommend them at this point.

What a great package! Put 4 new galvanized rims and tires on a snowmobile trailer due to salty conditions. Excellent price. Trailer shops in the area didn’t even offer galvanized rims and their standard product was more expensive. Very happy with the purchase.

Rims are okay, not made great. Tires and rims arrived a day earlier than expected, well packaged. Tires are perfect. Great customer service. Internet site doesn't provide a phone number to ask questions before your purchase, number shows up after purchased made. New and old rims and finished product.

Better tire than the one that came on my new trailer. Great service too.

Great way to buy tires

The tire and wheel look great and function as expected. Cost was excellent and it was shipped and arrived quickly.

Recently purchased a boat and trailer with no spare. I ordered this matching tire and even though there shipment was delayed from the manufacturer it still arrived within 5 days, just in time for our outing. Good thing because I ended up having a flat from a nail and had to put it to use. Couldn't be more thankful.

Excellent tire. I am a professional fisherman, and have been using these tires for about a year now and have nothing but good things to say. I make several long road trips fishing and these tires have been very durable and well worth the price. I highly recommend these to anyone looking for trailer tires.

Came on time and item is as stated. Like others have said the wheel looks like a kid painted it but it is a spare tire for my trailer so I don’t mind.

Tires are great but they really need to fix the quality of the rims. Like everyone mentions - very poor craftsmanship

Ordered 2 replacement tires/rims form my boat trailer

Excellent customer service

Easy ordering

Great prices

What else could you possibly want?!?!

I am using this for a spare so I have not used it on the ground. Tire and wheel look nice and looks like good quality. Fast shipment and great customer service!

Good product nicely packaged would of given 5 stars but when I ordered the checkout page said it would be here 6/19 then when I got tracking info it was 6/22

Spare tire was delivered as advertised! Great price and excellent customer service. The tire matches exactly to what is on my trailer!

  • Can a 14 x 6 Trailer Wheel be Used in Place of a 14 x 5-1/2 Wheel with ST215/75-15
Even with a wheel that is 1/2 inch wider the section width of the tire will still be the same so there won't be any fit issues. But you mentioned that you have 14 x 5-1/2 wheels now so the product you came from when the question was asked, # AM3S560, is a 15 inch tire and wheel so that would not be a good match if the rest of the tires are 14 inch and your are replacing just one. If you want to go to the ST215/75-15 size then I would need to know the original tire size on the sidewall...

When you purchase a pre-mounted tire/wheel combination from etrailer these items came from the manufacturer already joined. They are not given a full dynamic balance as you would find on a set of new automobile tires, but they are mounted in such as way that the tire's low spot is matched up to the wheel's high spot. This provides a degree of balancing that is perfectly adequate for trailer tires, Always keep your trailer tires fully inflated to the cold tire pressure indicated on the...

So unfortunately Jorge, the info you provided isn't trailer tire sizing, it seems like manufacturer codes possibly. That said, there is a way to at least get a good idea and possibly the exact match by measuring. For example, if you measured your tire - when fully inflated - along with your rim, and found the rim was 13 inches in diameter, the tire was 24 inches in diameter, and the tire was 7 inches wide a match is a 175/80R13 like the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10210. For a 215/75-14 tire with a galvanized wheel I would choose the Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM32182. Unless you need the stiffer sidewall for off-road or agricultural applications, I would not get a bias ply tire like the # AM3S560 you were looking at. The radial tire will have better performance and hold up longer by comparison. Both come with a 5-year warranty on the tire and a 1-year worry-free guarantee.

We do not carry Trailer King tires so I am not sure about their speed rating but most tires have a letter speed rating the sidewall of the tire that indicates the speed rating. The speed rating for trailer tire # AM3S560, is 65 miles per hour. You would not want to go over 65 miles per hour because that will generate more heat. Heat is the number one enemy of tires, especially trailer tires. This is because trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall that, when overloaded, ran at higher speeds, or under inflated, will generate excessive heat and cause the tire to fail.
