Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Availability of Load Star ST175/80-13 Radial Trailer Tire on a White Painted Wheel
I took a look at your order history, and the last tire purchase I saw was a 185/80-13 bias-ply load range D tire purchased back in 2010. This is part # AM1ST79, and was purchased as a tire only, not a wheel/tire combo. For a 175/80-13 radial tire load range C on a white painted wheel, we offer the Karrier Loadstar # AM31951 which is an 8 spoke white trailer wheel with a 5 lug on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. For the same tire on a white painted modular wheel with the same wheel bolt pattern,...

  • Upgrading to a Larger Bias Ply Trailer Tire
As long as the bolt pattern matches, there are really only 2 other things you will need to confirm. You will need to make sure you have the needed space available for a larger tire and wheel combination. The minimum distance from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender will need to be 3 inches when under load. Though less important, you will also want to make sure you have around 1 1/2 inches of clearance from the sidewall of the tire to the side of the fender or frame of the trailer. The...

  • Where Are the Tires Made in the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire And Wheel # AM31951
The radial tires in the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13 Inch White Wheel, part # AM31951, are made in China or Taiwan. Most all of the trailer tires are now made overseas.

  • Do Kenda Karrier ST 175/80R13 Trailer Wheels/Tires, Part # AM31951, Come Pre-Balanced
The Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Wheel/Tire, part # AM31951, is not fully dynamically balanced when the tire is mounted. Full dynamic balancing of trailer tires is less critical than for passenger vehicle tires, where a severe out-of-balance condition could be noticeable. However, Kenda does match the low spot of the tire with the high spot of the wheel when mounting them to achieve a partial balance.

  • Can Trailer Tire Size 175/80-13 Replace Size 185/80R13
The 185/80-13 trailer tire size and the 175/80-13 both fit the exact same rim sizes so yes you could go down to the 175 size like the part # TTWTRTM1758013C which is a radial with a higher speed rating of 81 mph.

  • Will the Electric Trailer Brake Kit 10 - 3,500 lbs Work with Lippert 3,500 Lb Axle and 12 Wheels
The Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting part # AKEBRK-35-SA will work great with a Lippert 3,500 lb axle. That said, I'm a bit confused on the wheel size you said you have as nearly all hubs we offer for this size axle require at least a 13" wheel. I'm not sure why you have such small wheels but they will need to be upgraded to use these brakes and subsequent hubs, the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly part # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K. I recommend the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial...

  • Can You Upgrade From 12 to 13 Tires on a 2020 Flagstaff 176LTD Pop Up Camper
You may be able to get away with not raising your trailer to upsize your tires to the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer # AM31951 (load range C), but more than likely you would end up needing to raise it. The best way to determine this would be to fully compress your suspension system and measure the clearance that you would have. Our recommendation would be to raise the trailer, which can be done with an over-under kit like the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00...

  • What Tire Brand Is On Your Trailer Wheel and Tire Combination
I checked our warehouse and called our supplier and the brand of tire we have in stock for the Kenda ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13 Inch White Wheel, part # AM31951, at this moment is Loadstar Karrier. Our supplier changes tire manufacturer from time to time so the current stock is all I can speak for and the tire brand could change at any time.

  • What Larger Wheel And Tire Options Are There For a Karavan 5 X 8 Utility Trailer With 4.8-12 Tires?
We have both the 5.3R12 # TT53012C(5.39" x 21.57") and ST145/R12 # AM10130(5.7" x 21.3") which are larger than your current 4.80-12 # TT48012C(4.84" x 20.63") tire on your Karavan 5x8 utility trailer. Unfortuntately I cannot say for sure what size may fit due to clearances you will need to verify as this is not a trailer we have and the manufacturer does not publish the information for us to see. • Can 10 Inch Wheels Be Replaced with 12 or 13 Inch Wheels on Motorcycle Trailer
Based on the picture you attached of your motorcycle it does look like you will be able to jump in size to a 12 inch, possibly 13 inch tire and wheel combo. The important thing to maintain is at least 3 inches of clearance between the top of the tire and the bottom of the fender to ensure they don't rub up against each other during travel. • P175/70R13 Trailer Tire Replacement Recommendations
Tire sizes that start with the letter P are for passenger vehicles and should not be used on a trailer. That is also why you can't find the exact same size since that is not a common trailer tire size. Your best option is going to be to replace the wheels and tires of your trailer with matching ST tires that are confirmed to fit your trailer hub. You can measure on your trailer to make sure that you have clearance for a 24 inch tall tire with a width of 6.9 inches. • Measuring a Pop-Up Trailer for Larger Wheels and Tires.
To determine clearance for larger tires you will first need to start with the tires you already have. You will need to determine how much clearance you have on your current tires throughout the suspension range. I like to see at least 1" of clearance all the way around the tire at a minimum. Once you have determined if you do...

  • Can Car Tires be Used on a Trailer
I strongly advise against putting passenger vehicle tires on a trailer. This is because trailer tires and passenger vehicle tires are constructed differently. Trailer tires (they will have ST in front of the size which stands for special trailer) are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load. Passenger vehicle tires are not built this way since they are designed to handle more lateral forces from turning. A passenger vehicle tire could work as a temporary fix only if you...

Usually, a 175/70-13 is a passenger car tire. What you can do to verify is look at the tire again and if there is a number after the size, like 82Q, it is not a trailer tire. Trailer tires do not have this additional number, which is a load index and speed rating. The closest fit would be a 175/80-13. This tire will be the same width as your current tires but will be 1-3/8 inches taller. For just the tire without the wheel, you can use # AM10210, which is a load range D radial tire. If...
