Video Transcript for Comprehensive Review: Brake Mounting Flange for 2-3/8" Round Axle

Today we're going to be taking a look at a brake mounting flange for a 2 3/8" round axle. This trailer brake mounting flange gets welded to the end of the axle beam to provide a secure mounting place and support for the brake assembly. This part number includes one brake mounting flange. It's for use with a 10" brake assembly. The center hole diameter, that pilot hole. That's going to give us a diameter of 2.27".

You can see that's going to contain four bolt holes. These are going to be separated apart from one another on center by 2 7/8", and that's going to be the same separation for each one. That's a square design. It's a steel construction that has a thickness of about 1/4". Overall measurements going edge to edge this direction. It's going to measure 3 3/4", and again it's a square design so it's going to measure the same going in this direction, 3 3/4".

That's going to do it for today's look at the brake mounting flange for a 2 3/8" round axle.

I wanted to install brakes on my enclosed trailer, but the axle didn't have the flange to mount the backing plates. These flanges had the correct bolt pattern for the brake backing plates and the correct center hole to slide over the machined area on the 3500 lb axle, for an easy weld-on upgrade.

I got my trailer down now and need it badly tomorrow

by:

Service was good and shipment was rite on time. One of the grease seals was bent in the shipment but I think it will work time will only tell. I was hoping that Dexter being made in America that they would use American made bearing also, they don't . The only other thing was I Thought I was getting bearing buddies but after looking back at the description I see that it wasn't , that is my mistake for not knowing better. I would have saved 18 dollars being I used my old grease caps instead. But over all I will use this company again great service. Keep up the great work.

  • Can Brakes be Added to 3,500 Pound Dexter Trailer Axle
Yes, brakes can be added to your trailer and I've linked an article to help with the parts you'll need. The first thing you'll need is the brake mounting flanges welded to the axle, like you mentioned. The correct flange is # 4-35 however these need to be welded by a qualified welder because the mounting flange must be welded square and concentric. This is generally done using a jig at a trailer shop. I've linked our selection of hub and drum assemblies for 3,500 pound axles. You'll...

  • Brake Mounting Flange Recommendation for Dexter 3,500 lb Axle
Looks like you have a 3,500 lb Dexter axle without brake flanges. The correct brake flanges for that style of axle is the part # 4-35. Welding a mounting flange, possible item # 4-35, is a very precise installation. The flanges need to be installed square and concentric to the hub and drum assembly and each other. If the flange is installed incorrectly rapid brake lining wear, improper braking, trailer dog legging, bearing failure, rapid tire wear and, worst of all, weakening of the axle...

  • Parts Needed To Add Brakes To Single Axle Boat Trailer
Hey Steven, thanks for reaching out. It may be possible to add brakes to your trailer. The first thing you will want to verify is that your axle has a brake flange. It should look something like part # 4-35. If no brake flange is present, they can be welded on by a shop, or you can replace the axle entirely. If you do have a brake flange, this means brakes can be added. From there I will need to gather a bit of info from you. I will need to know the weight capacity of your axle, as that...

Hey Thomas, if your Kar Kaddy already has brakes you'd need to use Demco's Replacement Brake Caliper Assembly for Demco Tow Dollies # DM13825-92 for a replacement. If your Kar Kaddy does not have brakes, then yes you can absolutely use the Kodiak Disc Brake Caliper # KDBC225DAC. You'd also need the rest of the kit # K2R35D, a hub # DM04369, a brake line kit # DM5424, and a mounting flange # 4-35. This flange would have to get welded on as well by a qualified professional. • Determining Correct Parts To Add Electric Brakes To 6.5x16 Dual Axle Landscape Trailer
I would be more than happy to help you find the correct parts to add electric brakes to you 6.5x16 Landscape trailer but you will need to find out a few measurements of your spindles first. Different weight capacity axles will require different bearings, hubs, and brake components. To determine which components you will need you will need to take a few measurements. First you will need to know what inner and outer bearings your trailer uses, as well as which grease seal. The easiest...

  • Parts Needed to Add Electric Brakes to Trailer with 3,500 Pound Axles
To answer your last question first the trailer has been towed with no brakes so even if you only add brakes to one axle it will be an improvement. Based on your measurements I'm thinking your inner bearings are # L68149 (1.378 inch diameter) and outer bearings are # L44649 (1.063 inch diameter). Very close to what you have but you'll want to double check like you mentioned. If these bearings are correct the hub and drum assembly for your trailer is # AKHD-545-35-K. If they're not the...

  • Can Electric Brakes Be Installed On One of The 3,500-Lb Axles of a Tandem Axle Utility Trailer
I would first check with the laws in your state as far as how many brakes are required for the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of your tandem axle trailer. Some states require brakes on both axles of a tandem axle trailer. If brakes are allowed on one axle I would recommend to put them on the front axle since that is the axle that will be bearing the most weight of the trailer. Also, when stopping the trailer, the weight of the trailer will be shifting to the front axle more than the...

So the short answer is no, there is nothing you can do to your current mounting plate to make another braking assembly fit your current setup. What you have is pretty unique, and when the team and myself took a look at it we were all in agreement that the best step forward is to cut of your current flange and weld on a new one. Now this is a pretty intensive project and is going to require a special jig that is designed specifically for this, so this isn't something you're going to be...

  • Where does a Brake Flange need to be Welded on a Spindle
Welding a brake flange on a spindle is not something we recommend most people doing. Most spindles have these welded on at the factory with specialized jigs and higher precision welding equipment that what even experienced do-it-yourselfers have. The flange needs to be welded on concentric and square. Square meaning the flange must be a true 90 degrees from the spindle and concentric meaning the gap around the spindle must be the same 360 degrees around. If not, the brakes will not wear...
