Question:
Hello, I have a 2019 6 x12 Cargo Mate single-axle cargo trailer without brakes. What do I need to install the brakes on it? The trailer will be towed by a 2017 Subaru Outback. What do I need to install on that to activate the trailers brakes? Thanks

Hey Frank! The first thing I would do is see if you have a brake flange like the # 4-35 you looked at on your axle. If not, you will need to either add one or get a new axle. If you're adding a brake flange you will need to know the axle diameter. Also, you will have to take it to an axle shop for installation since this has to be precise.
If you have a brake flange, or install one, the next thing you will need is new hub and drum assemblies along with brake assemblies. This will require identifying your axle. The best way to do this is to look at the axle tag and get the serial number. For example, if you have a standard 3,500 lb axle you can use the # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K for hubs along with the # AKEBRK-35-SA for brakes and # BRKH10B for hardware. If you can send me the information from the tag I can find out what will fit.
For wiring you can use the # HS381-9000 to add a 7-way along with # 10-1-1 for extra wire to run to the brake assemblies. A breakaway like the Bright Way Push-to-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 3802308 will also be required.
Since you already have the trailer I'm assuming you at least have a hitch and 4-way on your 2017 Subaru Outback. To power the brakes you will need to add a 7-way along with a brake controller. The # ETBC7 comes with everything you need to upgrade your 4-way to a 7-way.
For a brake controller, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED52VR. This is an incredibly reliable brake controller that is easy to use and won't take up space. The main unit installs behind the dash so only the knob is visible giving it an OEM look.
