Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha Brake Controller 3070-P Review

Today we're going to review part number 3070-P. This is the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for the Draw-Tite and the Tekonsha electric brake controllers. Now this is a custom fit part number. It is designed to fit the 2006 to 2014 Honda Ridgeline with the factory tow package and the 2009 tecurrent 00:00:21 Honda Pilot with the factory tow package. Now this wiring adapter will help ease the installation of your electric brake controller. The one end with the gray connector is a custom connector end which will plug into the built in factor brake controller port that's usually beneath the dash of your vehicle. The other end, the smaller black flat design end, will plug into the back of your electric brake controller.

Now this adapter is compatible with the time-delayed brake controllers by Draw-Tite and also the proportional brake controllers by Tekonsha like the Prodigy, Prodigy P2, Prodigy P3, the Primus IQ and the Voyager. Basically when you go to install this, I've got a sample here of a Tekonsha P3 brake controller. We do sell that separately on our website, part number 90195. If you look at the back you can see where the plug would go in so you just take your plug, push it and it snaps into place, locks into place. Then you just go to your other end where the custom connector is and they you'll just find the location of your factory controller brake port, usually under the dash. Match up the connector, plug it right in and you'd be ready to go.

When you need to remove your brake controller all you need to do is pull up on the tab and it'll release it from the controller. That should do it for the review on part number 3070-P, the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for the Draw-Tite and Tekonsha electric brake controllers. .

Just what the doctor ordered for the customers Honda Ridgeline. Unbilivably, though the truck was completely wired from under the dash from the factory since it was purchased new with the trailer package, the dealership was oblivious to the fact that a brake controller was needed and were dumbfounded on where to get one, or where the connector was located in order to install it. Found the controler on etrailer.com and the connector location on utube. 228914

Perfect interface between the controller and the factory wiring. I'd have given it 5 stars if it were a wee bit longer - say 8 more inches. On my 2012 Pilot, I mounted the controller in the bin right below the radio because it just seemed in the way of my legs in the more normal position above the accelerator on the dash. The cable wasn't quite long enough for that and I ended up fabbing my own and put this one in the box for the next time. 434856

I gave this a 4 star just because I haven't been able to hook up the trailer yet. The Primus IQ brake controller light is on so I'm assuming it will be fine. The harness arrived in good time. I was able to hook it up in my 2017 Honda Ridgeline in about 20 minutes. The longest part was finding the connection! It was above and left of the parking brake. A headlamp really helped. It's very tight in there so I could use only one hand and did a lot of it by feel. In the picture you need to follow the red wire to the connection. The brake controller I mounted on the plastic in front of my right knee. 321040

Update - Everything worked fine. We went on several trips with our trailer and no problems at all.

Just bought the Tekonsha Primus IQ and installed it. Haven't used it yet, as I pick up my first travel trailer next week. Product is solid, packaged with ample, clear instructions, wiring and mounting hardware. Lower dash on my Honda Ridgeline slopes steeply so I fashioned an L-bracket from 14 ga. steel bar and secured to side of center stack (see photo). Nice and level. Wiring to my harness was a bear, just because of where my connector was buried; needed the YouTube videos. Price was much lower from etrailer than any RV dealer around here. Arrived in less than a week. Think I made a smart choice. If it works as advertised it will get a fifth star. 375303

2017 Honda Ridgeline

Hello, as requested I have attached some pics of the brake controller after installation on my 2017 Honda Ridgeline. I have a lease vehicle so I did not want to drill any holes in the vehicle to mount or run wires. So what I did was install the mount bracket upside down and place a strong commercial velcro patch to the brake controller mount and to the tray area that it is sitting on. Then I slipped the wire harness between the crack in the IP and the lower console and tucked it up behind the dash so it could not be seen. The velcro holds the brake controller quite secure. This way I can remove the controller and reuse in my next vehicle without leaving any permanent marks or holes to this one. Anyway , just thought I would share… As far as the controller. I am very happy with its operation and functions. 523633

2016 Honda Pilot

Just bought a Prodigy 3 and on my first trip with our light weight [email protected] clamshell with electric brakes pulled with a 2016 Honda Pilot...very satisfied. I installed a factory hitch and harness and the cable etrailor provided snapped right in. The trailer is under 2,000 lbs so I opted to bet the boost to zero. So far so good. The only issue is it seems to apply the brakes more firmly when going over rough pavement, otherwise the braking action is very smooth. I didn't want to mount the controller bracket permanently so I bent an angle plate into a U shape and pop riveted it so it would hang in the lower trim panel. 407957

Honda Ridgeline

We have a Honda Ridgeline and this part plugged into the factory plug that was under the dash by the emergency brake petal switch. It was difficult to get to, but success was achieved. This was needed for our camper trailer. This made it easy, no hard wiring, just ordered the part for the Ridgeline and then plug and go. The brake controller plugged into the other end and now I am a happy camper. It worked, I blew a fuse while installing, must have touched something? No problem though, replaced it and was all was good. 202033

We found this product through a search for info on how to install a brake controller on our 2017 Honda Ridgeline. We had a Draw-Tite Activator IV Controller but struggled to hook it up until we watched your online video and discovered the existence of this Tekonsha adapter (3070-P) which was literally plug and play. We chose to install our controller in the same location as in the video but did not want to cut a hole in the panel. The wires tucked easily out of the way without cutting the hole. We towed yesterday and the trailer brakes/controller worked perfectly. Never could have done this without your video and this adapter. The picture shows our controller installed. You can’t really see the adapter since much of it is tucked under the dash. 716815

Comments

Typically, a brake controller will go into a sleep mode after 15-20 minutes of inactivity. When in the sleep mode, the controller only draws a tiny amount of power, nowhere near enough to drain a battery, unless its left for several months. Brake controllers dont have an on/off switch, as some folks could forget to turn it on before towing.

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for 2019 Honda Ridgeline
  • First let's get your 2019 Honda Ridgeline setup for a 7-way and brake controller. It sounds like you might have a 7-way already installed, but if you didn't the correct kit would be the part # 118288 which is a confirmed fit for your vehicle. The brake controller I recommend is the P3 part # 90195 that you referenced. This is the best performing controller and also the most advanced so it will do the best job for you overall. It has a screen that can display full words, the ability to save...

  • Trailer Brake Controller Installation in 2017 Honda Pilot with Factory Tow Package
  • Some late-model pickup trucks offer the option of a factory-installed trailer brake controller but a vehicle such as a 2017 Honda Pilot does not. In your Pilot you can use a superior aftermarket brake controller. In fact many folks with factory controllers ultimately end up replacing them since the aftermarket units like the Prodigy P2 # 90885 and P3 # 90195 work so much better. If your Pilot came from the factory with a tow package already installed then brake controller installation...

  • For your 2018 Honda Pilot I recommend a proportional brake controller. With a proportional brake controller # 90195, you can get heavy-duty emergency braking, general braking or slow-to-an-idle braking for your trailer automatically. The intensity with which your trailer brakes are activated and the rate at which they are applied are dependent on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. This means that, unlike time-delay controllers - which send the same amount of preset power to your trailer...

All you need is the install harness part # 3070-P which is a confirmed fit. I attached an install video that shows this harness installing a brake controller in a similar Honda Pilot as yours as well. I also attached a picture that shows where you'll find the harness.

  • For your 2019 Honda Ridgeline the trailer wiring harness I recommend is the Tekonsha part # 118288 if you need a 7-way or part # 118778 for if you need a 4-way. These are the best wiring harness solutions as the Tekonsha brand is the most reliable option currently available due to their higher quality converter boxes. • Trailer Wiring and Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2015 Honda Pilot
  • The T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118265 comes with everything needed to install a 7-Way on a 2015 Honda Pilot, but it does not come with any brake controller ports. To install an aftermarket brake controller in your vehicle it will have to have the port already or have one from a Honda dealer installed. The correct harness to use once you have the port would be part # 3070-P. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best...

  • Installing the Tow-Pro Elite on a 2012 Honda Pilot
  • Vehicle manufacturers have made it very confusing as to what has the "tow package" and what doesn't. Some models include a transmission cooler, a trailer hitch, and wiring, while others may only have an extra transmission cooler like what you have. I can let you know how you can test to see what you have but without testing the only way to really know what you have is to call your local Honda dealer with your VIN. We do have both the T-One # 118265 that you purchased and the T-One #...

  • Is a Supplemental Transmission Cooler Required to Tow 1,200 Pound Trailer with 2016 Honda Pilot
  • I checked with the 2016 Honda Pilot owner's manual and found the following information regarding transmission coolers: An additional ATF (automatic transmission fluid) cooler is required to keep the transmission from overheating when towing more than 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg). So if the trailer is less than 1,200 you would not have to have a transmission cooler. But I did also find this information in the manual: Trailer brakes are recommended for any trailer with a total weight of 1,000...

  • Where is the Brake Controller Connector Located Under the Dash on a 2009 Honda Ridgeline
  • The factory brake controller connector under the dash is not all that visible but it is fairly easy to locate. It is a 4-pin connector that is located underneath and left of the steering column. It will be taped to another harness near the brake pedal. Once you locate the connector you will know it is the right one if it mates to the Tekonsha Wire Replacement for Honda Ridgeline and Pilot, item # 3070-P. A little bit of searching is required. Sometimes the connector is completely...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Won't Power On In 2015 Honda Pilot
  • It sounds like you are missing the fuse in your smaller, secondary under-hood fuse box that powers the brake controller. I checked in a manual for a 2012 Honda Pilot, and it was the number 14 fuse labeled Trailer E-Brake. It should be close if not identical in your 2015 model. There should be a diagram on the underside of the fuse box cover you can use to verify this.
