Video Transcript for Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins 7 Way RV Style connector with LED test lights. It's available in two different sizes. For eight foot, part number HM20087, and for six foot, part number HM20086. This pre-wired seven blade style connector is going to allow you to connect your trailer end to your towed vehicle. It's perfect as a replacement or when wiring up a new trailer. The built in LED lights are going to provide you with easy trouble shooting for all the functions on your trailer. We have it hooked up to our tester now.

Here's our tail lights, our left turn signal, our brake lights, our right turn signal, our electric brakes, our 12 volt auxiliary power, and finally our back up lights. The flexible cable's going to allow for easy positioning, and the molded sleeve is going to protect our wires. The handle has large molded grips to make connecting and disconnecting easy. It's an easy installation. We'll go ahead and show you that now. Now, our Hopkins 7 Way does come pre-stripped of its jacket.

To help us out with our installation, we're going to be using some ring terminals, part number 44-5310A. I'm going to start with my white wire first. I'm going to take some wire strippers. I'm going to strip back about 1/4". Make sure the wire's nice and clean, want to take a ring terminal, and I'm going to put it in place. Now we want to make sure that the wiring is, of course, visible in or ring terminal and that it's just about even with the end here.

We don't want it sticking out any. Once it's where we want it, we can crimp it down. Then once it's crimped, it's a good idea to check it and make sure it's on there good. Now, I can repeat the same process with the rest of my wires. Now, I'm going to stagger them about 1/2" apart according to how they're positioned in my junction box.

This is not only going to make it easier to install, but it's going to make our junction box have a cleaner look. When you're all done, yours should look something like this depending on the order of your junction box. Let's go ahead and head underneath our trailer. So, here I am underneath my trailer. You can see my junction box and my trailer wiring all wired up. Let's go ahead and wire up the 7 Way. Now my junction box did have a little grommet. I went ahead and put that on my wire first, and then I can put it into place just like that.I'm going to connect my white wire first, which is my ground. I'm going to repeat the same process with my remaining wires. Our remaining connections are as follows. We connected our red wire to left turn, our blue to brake, our green to tail lights, our yellow to back up or reverse, our brown to right turn, and then finally our black to our battery, which is our power. With everything connected, we're going to go ahead and test it out.The best way for you to test it at home is by hooking it up to your vehicle. We're going to use our tester. We have our tail lights, our right turn signal, our brake lights, and here's our left turn signal. And that's going to complete our look at the Hopkins 7 Way RV Style connector with LED test lights.

High quality product used to replace a lower quality harness installed by the RV manufacturer. I was having intermittent “check trailer brakes” on my dashboard display. Suspected a wiring issue. Founded crashed insulation on the blue trailer brake wires in the travel trailer junction box for all functions. Repair complete and no repeated error messages. The LED system status lights provide instant information that the truck is providing al proper electrical signals and power for the travel trailer. 663025

Shipped cheapest ground UPS because I was not in a hurry. Arrived quickly. I took steps to compare the pigtails and all wires COLORS matched exactly my 5th WP. My old one was all brass connectors and had corroded enough to lose connection while driving down roads. It may have been simply the center of the female receptacle center that needed to be pushed slightly together to create a better pinch grip on the center pin from the cable male end. Regardless, this was a quick replacement color wire for color wire. IF NOT; I WOULD HAVE MADE A HAND-DRAWN DIAGRAM TO FOLLOW. I LOVE THE LED LIGHTS Keep reading for steps I used to replace. First took clear phone pictures of the existing wire connections. Next step to remove existing has options. You could simply carefully select each existing pigtail cable wire and cut it leaving behind all existing trailer wires with a piece of each wire intact left behind as you remove the existing pigtail cable. If you don't cut the old pigtail wires this project could get confusing. My wires were all connected using wire nuts in a small 4" square electrical box. STOP - the first step is to disconnect the battery and all power so you don't spend hours trying to find a fuse you blew. Okay back to the electrical box with the existing wires with the wire nuts still intact. I put the new cable into the 4" electrical box and one-by-one connected the new cable. Some of the existing wire nuts had up to 4 other existing wires in each. Since all my colors matched, I did not take a picture. I just cut existing out and new in; about 10 minutes but 30 minutes total with wife helping test all lights, brakes, turn signals, etc. I LOVE THE LED LIGHTS that helped me figure out that my ground was losing connection if I pushed the plug a little to the sideways. I pinched the center blades together in my receptacle and now know it is possible my existing cable was not bad. (I had forgot to unhook and drove off a couple times and I though that might have stressed internal pigtail wiring causing intermittent "trailer disconnected" warning on my truck dash lights. By the way, this new cable does not show any brass connectors. Yes, I would buy again and would recommend to my friends and might hide from my enemies. I did find a lower price elsewhere but this one with LED was best option for my needs to know that this product is sending electric power to my trailer brakes, lights, and battery on my 5th Wheel camper. Full timer over 2 years so far. 359237

I have used this for about a year now AND the LED lights on the connector have been great to have. Twice, so far, my truck has said I did not have trailer brakes connection. The lights verified. The connection wiring in the truck have been replaced and the LED feature helped me with a truck warranty claim.

Love it. Debated weather another $15 for the LEDs on the plug was worth it. Spend the money as it is well worth it for trouble shooting. I did and glad I did. 543083

Absolutely love this harness! I kept getting the trailer disconnected message from my TT. This solved it and the LEDs show you what power is beeing sent from the truck. I gave 4 stars because there should be a diode because the AX light stays on even when it is unhooked from the truck and will not show if the truck is charging the TT because of the TT battery. 542889

I ordered the product thinking I would have a number of days to complete other projects. The product arrived so quickly that I was not ready to install it. I had searched for this product and very few places (RV supplies sell it). I was glad when I found it on etrailer. The product is as advertised and was very easy to install. The LED's are a quick method of determining the condition of your wiring and signals both from your tow vehicle and from your travel trailer. I would highly recommend it when you need to replace your cable. It is very reasonably priced. 426498

Another home run for etrailer! After replacing trailer wiring several times over the years, I finally found a replacement that will last The harness is very well constructed ( better than expected)! The cable is well protected and durable. The 8 foot length is perfect for most any application to get wires right back to trailer. No more blinking lights! 419365

Ask the Experts about this Hopkins Wiring

  • Can LED Test Lights on Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector HM20087 Cause Battery Drain
LED lights, including LED test lights that can be built into trailer wiring, use so very little power that you do not need to be concerned about depleting your battery. It would take many, many months of continuous draw (without ever running the truck to charge the battery) for such an item as the Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector # HM20087 to cause any issue with battery drain in your 2012 Ford F-150.

  • Installation of 7-Way Trailer Wiring When Colors Dont Match
If you have connected your Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Connector w/ Molded Cable and LED Test Lights - Trailer End - 8' Long # HM20087 incorrectly, you will not cause any damage to your system as long as the ground connection installed correctly. If the ground is in the wrong location you have the potential to blow fuses, damage lights, etc. If the ground is in the correct location, then the wiring will work and you just will need to match functions. • Adding a New 7-Way Trailer Connector and Wiring to a Car Hauler Trailer
You will likely need some additional wire to reach the lights when installing 7-Way connector # HM20087. If you just want 4-wire you can use # DW04923-1, sold by the foot, or # 16-4B-1, also sold by the foot. You will also need some butt connectors such as heat shrink version # DW05744-5. If you want all 7-wires you can use # DW04914-1 which is sold by the foot as well. Another option is a 7-Way that is considerably longer, # 50-67-008, which at 22 feet long is more than twice the length...

If you want the trailer side 7-way with LED, I recommend the Hopkins 7-Way RV Style Trailer Connector w/ LED Test Lights - Trailer End # HM48503.
