What is the Difference Between 7-Way RV and Utility Trailer Connectors

Question:
7 pin plug styles RV vs Utility it seems that RV style is the only one available in my area, ...but i think its by default. my vehicles seem to be wired for the RV style, as well. i dont tow RVs, only equipment, car, and utility trailers. am i overthinking it? is it somewhat standard, now, to just wire everything to the RV style?

The only difference between 7-Way Utility and 7-Way RV is the color of the wires. The pin outs are the exact same so either would work just fine with the other. If you check out the picture I attached you'll see that the functions are all the same.

There is one big difference- wire gauge! All the wires on a utility trailer can be 14AWG. On an RV, the signal (lights) wires can be 14AWG, but the trailer brakes (blue) should be at least 12AWG and the hot and neutral (black and white) wires should be at least 10AWG. Higher loads need bigger wires or they will get hot, melt and short out or even cause a fire!

Thank you for your clarification. I would be interested in the plug that is pictured at the very bottom left. That is what I currently have. Is there a specific name for that plug? Much appreciated. JZ

The 7-way round pin (as used on semis and farm equipment) pictured here has a major difference. That difference separate stop and turn wiring. It is not compatible with either of the 7-way rv or utility without a converter.
