Video Transcript for Bargman 7-Way Molded Trailer End Installation

Today on our utility trailer, we're going to be installing the Bargman 7 Way Molded Trailer End with a 6 foot long cable, part number 54006-009. This right here is what our new 7 way plug looks like. It has 6 foot of cable. On this particular trailer here, it only has stop, turn and running lights. There's no brakes on it, or back up, or 12 volt power, so we won't be using all of the features on our 7 way. To feed our wire in through the tongue of the trailer here, we're going to cut the wires here at this old 7 way plug. We'll then need to go underneath our trailer, and pull the old wires out through the tongue. This here was just an old piece of hose to help protect the wires.

To install our new 7 pole harness here into the trailer tongue, I'm using an old section of airline tubing. I'll feed that in. I'll then take the wires here and I'll tape them off to it so we can pull it down into position. Next we'll take our pull wire, we'll feed these in, pull the new harness into the trailer tongue. The tag on the wiring harness itself lists the functions for each color wire.

On this particular trailer, since there's no brakes or power wire needed, or reverse back up these three wires right here will not be used. We'll not be using the black wire, the red or the blue, so these three wires will just be taped off for now. Next we're going to take an additional piece of white wire here because we're going to extend our ground. For this particular trailer, the tongue's long enough that we want to have enough of 7 pole wiring out the front of the trailer to make it to our vehicle with the proper length. We're going to be using a heat shrink style butt connector, go ahead and crimp that down. On this particular trailer, there's actually two different running light wires that are bonded with the green wire and the yellow wires, so here's the right hand side brake and turn and running lights, and here's the driver's side brake and turn and running light. The yellow is the brake and turn, the brown is the running.

For the passenger side, the green is the brake and turn and the brown is the running. We're going to need to put the two brown wires together onto the brown wire here on our pigtail. This time we're going to be using a blue heat shrink connector. Go ahead and connect the two brown wires with the brown wire off the pigtail, using the heat shrink connector. We'll then need to take the green wire, we'll go up to the green wire on our 7 way plug. This is the passenger side brake and turn on the 7 way plug as well.

We'll then take our yellow wire, which is the driver's side brake and turn, we'll go up to our yellow wire on our 7 way plug. Next, we'll use a heat gun to seal up all of our butt connectors. If you don't have a heat gun, a regular lighter will work, but be very careful as you can easily burn the insulation on the wires. For our ground wire, to connect it to the vehicle's frame, we're going to be using the Decca ring terminal in the heat shrink design in the yellow color. Now that our other butt connectors have had a chance to cool down a little bit, we're going to tape our wires, just give them a little more protection. We're going to take our ground wire with the ring terminal, we're going to add it here to the ground stud, go ahead and tighten the nut back down. Now that we have all of our connections made, we're going to pull the blue wire back up so that it pulls the excess wire into the tongue of the trailer and also gives us a little more lead sticking out the front here. We're then going to use a couple zip ties to help secure our blue wire here at the tongue. With that, that will conclude our installation of the Bargman 7 Way Molded Trailer End Connector with a 6 foot long cable, part number 54006-009. .

4.5 Star Really like it as it's the first tail with properly sized brake, batt charge, & ground wire. Only slight negative. Silicone jacket was quite attractive, but in reality it's rather thin and not bonded tightly to the bundle (it wrinkles up easily when bending back over the end of the tongue when not in use. Will see how it holds up over longer term. That said, the blade connections are holding up well after a year (w/no loss in conductivity due to some alloy coating & associated fretting/corrosion as some other pigtails do) Did apply some high quality dielectric upon installation. 466842

Comments

Holding up well - in spite of appearing unusually thin outer insulation. Properly gauged brake, charge, & ground remains an outstanding choice.

I looked everywhere to find a plug that was not made of cheap soft plastic. One that would not be so stiff in cold weather that it works itself lose. This plug is a high quality and will remain flexable in cold weather. 653456

Do you have a question about this Wiring?

  • Comparing Bargman Heavy Duty 7-Way Trailer Connector # 54006-057 to # 54006-009
  • The difference between the Bargman 7-Way, RV-Style Connector w/ 6' Heavy Duty Insulated Cable - Trailer End # 54006-057 and the 7-Way Molded Trailer End with 6' Cable - HD Blue Insulated # 54006-009 is the color coding of the wire inside. For instance # 54006-057 uses the red wire for left turn and # 54006-009 uses the red wire for the 12V power. The color coding between these two will be different even though the function locations will be identical on the 7-way blades. I've...

  • Available 10-Foot Trailer-Side 7-Way Plug
  • We do have molded trailer-side 7-way plugs in several lengths. For a 10-foot you can use part # 50-67-005. If you prefer a 10-foot that includes a junction box for connecting your trailer wiring you can instead use part # 277-000141. If you need ring terminals you can use # 44-5310A.

  • 7-Way Trailer Wiring Recommendation for Use in Cold Weather
  • Sounds like you would want the 7-Way Molded Trailer End with 6' Cable # 54006-009. This is a 6 foot plug and lead that was designed specifically for cold weather so it would work well for you. I attached a review video for you to check out as well.

  • Identifying Type of Brake Wire and Connectors Used on Trailer Brakes
  • The wire is likely just a version of automotive wire that is made more rigid so that it is easier to route it through tight spaces. Or it could be shielded wire or even cross-link wire. If you need some wire for electric brakes you can use # 10-1-1. The connector sounds like it might be a quick splice connector such as # 562 also known as a Scotch Lock which is the 3M name brand.

  • Wiring Diagram Pictures for the 7-Way Molded Trailer End with 6' Cable # 54006-009
  • I attached two pictures for you to check out. One that shows the pin out functions for a standard 7-way and another that has a chart with all of the wire color functions of the 7-Way Molded Trailer End with 6' Cable # 54006-009 that you referenced.

  • Fit of Hopkins Vehicle Side 7-Way and Bargman Trailer Side 7-Way
  • I went out to our warehouse and paired the vehicle side Hopkins connector, part # HM40950, and the Bargman trailer side, part # 54006-009, and I was able to get them together but it certainly took more effort than it normally would. The double-wipe design, as Bargman calls is, makes it more difficult for the blades to fit in but once I got them together and the hook secured in place the connection was solid.

  • Troubleshooting New Electric Drum Brakes on Utility Trailer That Do Not Engage with GMC Controller
  • Since your 2010 GMC Sierra's factory-installed brake controller is properly engaging the brakes on your RV trailer we can start out troubleshooting by checking on the utility trailer's wiring since this is newly installed. The easiest way to test the brakes on the trailer is to do so independently of the truck. You can do this by disconnecting the truck/trailer connectors and applying 12V power and ground directly to the contacts on the trailer's plug. Please refer to the linked photo...

  • Replacement 7-Way Trailer Cord That Works in Cold Weather
  • If your concern is cold weather then I recommend the Bargman 7-Way Molded Trailer End # 54006-009 which is insulated by the heavy duty blue silicon and is rated for down to -67 degrees Fahrenheit. Attached is an installation video as well as the wiring code for this connector.

  • Would the 7-Way Molded Trailer End with 6' Cable # 54006-009 Stay Flexible When Cold
  • The 7-Way Molded Trailer End with 6' Cable # 54006-009 that you referenced should work great for you. It would not get stiff enough when cold to prevent it from making proper contact. We have not had any customer come back with that issue either.

  • Installing Bargman 7-Way With Color Coding Not Matching Trailer
  • Since the standard colors do not function correctly, you will need to wire according to function. You can use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to determine function of your vehicle as the signal comes to your junction box. Once you know the function coming in, you can match it to the function behind the junction box. To determine that function you can simply use a battery to run the negative to the trailer frame and use a jump wire from the positive terminal to each wire to determine...

  • Does 7-Way Molded Trailer End # 54006-009 Come with Heat Shrink Butt Connectors
  • 7-Way Molded Trailer End # 54006-009 does not come with the heat shrink butt connectors. You can add some for the smaller gauge wires using # DW05744-5. For the larger gauge power and ground wires you can use # DW05745-5.

  • 7-Way Bargmann RV Wiring Harness for Trailer Side
  • Molded 7-way trailer connectors like the Bargman # 54006-009 always have the copper because of its electrical connection properties. The way to keep them from corrosion over time is to use dielectric grease # 11755. This keeps moisture, dirt, and debris out of your connections that can lead to corrosion. This grease actually assists in the electrical connections as well, so it is a help in both ways.

  • 8 Foot Long 7-Way Trailer Connector for Dump Trailer
  • 7-Way trailer connectors have a male and a female side and the male installs on the trailer side and the female on the tow vehicle. That's why you are seeing them labelled differently. The part # 54006-009 is a trailer side 7-way like it sounds like you need but is a bit short. For an 8 foot section instead you'd want the Hopkins 7-Way part # H20046 which is an 8 foot long 7-way like you need.
