Pro Series Weight Distribution diagram

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Unique Features of Pro Series Round-Bar Weight Distribution

Pro Series Weight Distribution adjustable head from top and side

To adjust your weight-distribution head assembly to the correct angle, insert the included rivet and up to 8 washers into a 1/2-inch hole in the "U" on your head assembly. Use the smallest number of washers necessary to achieve the correct downward angle for the spring bars. Each washer lowers the chain ends of your spring bars by approximately 1-1/2 inches. Once the correct angle is reached, use the included bolts, serrated washers and nuts to lock the unit into place.

Pro Series Weight Distribution round spring bar locking devices

The round spring bars of this system slide up into the weight-distribution head and are secured with built-in, spring-bar locking devices for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and forged steel construction, these bars flex to ensure a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer.

Friction Sway Control

Pro Series Weight Distribution friction sway control installation on trailer framePro Series Weight Distribution friction sway control installation on hitch head

The integrated friction-style sway control of the Pro Series system reduces trailer sway caused by winds, winding roads and sudden maneuvers. As soon as your trailer begins to move out of line, the friction pads inside the unit touch one another and create resistance to help prevent further side-to-side movement. To install, simply bolt the sway-control ball plate to the A-frame of your trailer and attach the other end to the included ball, which mounts on the head of your weight-distribution hitch - drilling required. The ball plate mounts to the side of the trailer frame so it will not interfere with gas tanks, toolboxes or generators.

Video Transcript for Pro Series Weight Distribution - WD With Sway Control - PS49903 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number PS49903. This is the Pro Series Weight Distribution System with the Friction Sway Control. This system is going to evenly distribute the tongue weight to the axles of the tow vehicle and trailer for stability and control. That's just going to create a more level ride for both the tow vehicle and the trailer. The friction sway control system just reduces the sway caused by winds, curving roads and those sudden maneuvers that you just can't avoid sometimes. This is adjustable so the tension can be adjusted. That's going to let you create the perfect degree of control of resistance. It's going to feature the integrated handle that's going to engage and disengage the system and it's removable as well, so that's a great feature.

All you have to do is release the two spring-loaded locking pins, which are these right here, that hold it in place. The bracket's going to mount to the trailer frame so the friction sway control system is going to run parallel with the frame of the trailer. This end's going to go up there on that little ball and then this portion is going to mount to the trailer. That's going to lock into place there and then at each ball location, so you have two, one down here, one up here. That's where you're going to install the locking pins. It's also got the spacer block that you can install as well.

It's got the self-tacking bolts as well as the star washers to get it nice and secure and installed correctly. It's going to have the round forged steel spring bars that are tapered for superior flexibility. These bars will flex appropriately over uneven terrain for a controlled, even ride. It's also going to feature adjustable spring bar tension. All you've got to do is just switch the links in the lift chains. That's going to allow you to fine tune the system for your particular application. The head is also able to tilt.

All you have to do is . I already have it installed but right inside this portion here . and you can see the pin right here. This is just a rivet that I have installed and that rivet can have more washers added to it. That's just going to allow the head to be able to tilt as needed for your particular application.

You can add the washers in there or you can remove them, again, depending on your particular applications. It's also got the bolts here with the serrated washers and it's got the nuts on the other side. Once you get the tilt adjusted as needed, you just tighten down those nuts on the other side and it's going to hold it securely in place. This does come with the solid steel shank. It has a nice powder-coated finish on it so it's going to stand up well against rust and corrosion. That is designed for weight distribution so that's going to be exactly what you need. That is adjustable, so it has numerous mounting locations on it. It's got the long shank. It's also going to come with a 5/8-inch pin. It's going to come with a clip as well so you can secure that inside your hitch. It is designed to fit 2-inch x 2-inch trailer hitch receivers. The system is going to include the head assembly, the adjustable shank, the lift brackets, the round bars, the lift chains. It's going to come with all the pins and the clips that you need. It's also going to come with the friction sway control, 2-5/16-inch hitch ball and all the necessary hardware to get everything installed. This right here is just a shim. I don't want you to be confused when you get this. This is a shim and some of the later trunnion and rombar 00:03:36 -style weight distribution heads have a slightly wider spread between the ears that bolt up to the trailer bar which is this portion here. You can actually use the shim provided to fill any gap between the weight distribution head and the hitch bar used. You can see that it has the two holes. That way you can run your bolts through there and get that in there nice and snug. Tongue weight capacity is going to be 750 pounds to 1000 pounds with a gross towing weight of 10,000 pounds. Again, this is designed to fit 2-inch x 2-inch trailer hitch receivers that are designed for use with a weight distribution system. The shank link, which is going to be this portion back here, that's going to give us a measurement of 12-1/2 inches. It's going to give us a maximum rise of 6 inches from the top of the hitch receiver opening and a maximum drop of 2 inches, so that way you have full adjustability to fit this how you need it for your application. The hitch ball dimensions, diameter is going to be 2-5/16 of an inch. The shank length is going to measure 2-1/2 inches and then our shank diameter is 1-1/4. One of the things that you have to keep in mind is that when determining the proper weight rating for a rate distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight and then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Combining those two measurements will make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system. Getting the wrong weight distribution system can sometimes even make it a rougher ride and not necessarily perform what it needs to for that nice even ride. You want to be sure that you get the weight distribution that's going to match up with those two weights combined. That way you can ensure proper weight distributing for your application. These right here are going to mount to the frame of the trailer. You've got the bolts already installed there. All you've got to do is tighten those up so that fits nicely over there. If we take a measurement of the gap in between there so we know what size frame this is going to fit, from inside to inside is going to give us a measurement of about 3 inches. That's also where the chains connect. You can see that there. This right here is just a leverage bar. When you have this hooked up, it's really hard to control this by using your hands so it comes with a leverage bar. Put over there, it's going to allow you to get some leverage. That way you can control that as necessary and properly get everything attached the way that you need it to. I believe that's going to do it for our review of part number PS49903. This is the Pro Series Weight Distribution System with Friction Sway Control. .

your set up looks a lot like mine. I have a 2004 GMC Yukon. I purchased a 27.5 foot trailer, is this what you are pulling as well? How does it do? How much does your trailer weigh?ThanksShane

The product is excellent as is the price point. The RV dealership wanted $475 for a model with a step down in features (no sway control). No complaints. I had it professionally installed and the installers had nothing negative to say about it and no trouble installing it at all. The product is well-designed and simple to use. I especially like the grease fittings and sealed pivot assembly for the weight distribution arms. I don't want to have to disassemble the entire hitch to get some "special grease" (sold separately, of course!) into hard to reach areas like some of the (popular brand) weight distribution hitches. And the 33" spring-arm length is perfect to hit the spot between the propane tanks and batteries on my TT's tongue. It's like they thought about who was going to use it when they designed it. I tow my 7,100lb travel trailer with a 2003 Chevy 2500HD using this hitch system, and it tows beautifully. I can handle turns at reasonable speeds without excessive lean, and the truck and trailer behave as a sturdy, manageable unit instead of two large, heavy items with a flimsy, uncontrolled pivot point between them. The product is important, but the best part was the transaction and experience with eTrailer. I've purchased from eTrailer a few times before and always had a good experience, but I could not remember my password. I called the toll-free number instead and spoke with Ashley, who never threw any roadblocks and was very helpful throughout the process, which was as quick and easy as I could hope for. She found my account, confirmed addresses and made necessary changes, and helped me to decide on the right product for the job. She was well-informed about eTrailer's offerings and how they are to be used. I got the free shipping, but of course I ordered at the last minute, so didn't really leave enough time to receive the product before I needed to use it. Without making any promises, Ashley seems to have made it her business to get the hitch shipped a day faster than usual, getting it to me just in time. Bravo, Ashley. I will continue doing business with eTrailer any time I need towing equipment of any kind. 364586

I did extensive research on the product before buying; got, by far, the best price from etrailer and with free shipping, it was a no-brainier. Shipping was lightning fast, delivered right to my door with everything in perfect condition. This is my fifth time buying products from etrailer and I have been 100% satisfied every time. You definitely can shop with them with confidence; I highly recommend them and simply will not shop anywhere else for my towing needs. The Pro Series set-up is perfect for towing my 5000 lbs travel trailer with my 2009 Chevy Tahoe; it creates a safe even tow that you can immediately feel especially on the interstate at higher speeds. Set up took a little while but the online video gives easy step by step instructions that guide you through the process. The product is very rugged and has top notch quality comparable to other models at double the price. Awesome product, great price, fast shipping, excellent customer service; simply a perfect transaction. Thank you, etrailer! 93171

After a year of use the product is still functioning as if new. I use the complete system with the anti sway when pulling my 25 toy hauler full of water, gas, and my ranger. I couldnt be happier with the product. With the instructions I was able to set up the system correctly the first time without having to make any more adjustments.

Received order in a very prompt manner, (regardless of the weather problems on your end). Installation went as instructed with all parts included. Test drive was uneventful and could feel the improvement from the cab of truck..Looking forward to vacation time and not having to fight the sway caused by the big trucks on the freeway and the heavy tongue weight. 68373

My opinion hasnt changed. Have traveled over 4500 miles towing the trailer and it has increased my gas milage 2mpg. The big rigs dont blow me off the road when they pass me at 75 mph either. Would highly recommend it to any body towing a rig...

Customer Service when ordering was very helpful and knowledgeable of the product. Delivery was fast and arrived in good condition with all parts. Installation was easy for the most part with the exception of the torque requirements and the proper tilting of the head. I took me approximately one hour and fifteen minutes to install and level. The test ride was great with no more bouncing and bucking. This was installed on a Chevy Silverardo 2006 long bed and a 2013 26foot Skycat. I would buy from and recommend etrailer.com. Towed a sailboat (6000 lbs) on trailer (~1500 lbs) from Missouri to Colorado with a 1/2 Ton chevy pickup. Did great, no sway, no issues whatsoever. Installation was straightforward and done in the boat yard with limited tools without any trouble at all. We didn't put the boat on the trailer and had no opportunity to adjust the weight distribution. No problems at all. I definitely can recommend this hitch setup. 485181

I bought this product about a year ago and am using it on a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 pulling a 33 ft. Puma Travel Trailer. The max loaded weight of the camper is 8,000 lbs, which puts me right at the max gvw of the truck and trailer combined. I have pulled the camper with and without the weight distribution system attached and with and without the sway bar attached. They both make a huge difference in the handling and ride when towing the camper and I am super glad I bought it. It was recommended by the camper dealer, and I read all of the reviews, etc. I didn't understand the physics behind it all, but it really works great. Used an on-line video to help me get it installed (which was not a major ordeal, just have the right tools, etc. and be prepared to adjust it if necessary). I will eventually upgrade to a 2500 just for more towing power, but will probably put this system on that truck as well. Great product, well worth the cost. 384784

Hauled a 10,000 pound 24' trailer with a 2015 Tundra CrewMax 4wd TRD from Virginia Beach, VA to Oak Harbor, WA in January. Made it without a single issue using this weight distributing hitch. No swing, 70 mph across Wyoming, across mountains and snow, blistering wind and rain. Couldn't have asked for an easier trip. Just make sure your trailer is loaded properly and distribute the weight to have the correct weight at the hitch. I had about 20%. 323036

The trailer leveling system, (Pro series) and the pro series friction sway control have proven to be everything the manufacturer advertises. Sway and instability are essentially eliminated and handling, even in windy conditions, is comfortable and under control. This system is really essential for anyone considering RV'ing with a tow vehicle and trailer. I like that it was affordable and gets the job done with little or minimal effort on my part. Installation was simple and the instructions were clear. 315479

Ask the Experts about this Pro Series Weight Distribution
Do you have a question about this Weight Distribution?

  • Can You Back Up a Trailer when Using Weight Distribution
  • Some weight distribution system prohibit reversing because doing so could damage the system. If you are backing up in a straight line though it would be fine. But to make turns while backing up you would need to disengage the spring bars and/or the friction sway control unit, like on # PS49903, and then maneuver the trailer. Some systems do not have this restriction including the Reese Strait-Line systems and Blue Ox Sway Pro systems. If using a weight distribution system that does not...

  • Comparing Reese Dual Cam and Reese SC Weight Distribution on Ford F150 Towing 30 Foot Travel Trailer
  • When choosing a weight distribution system, it is best to begin the process knowing the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight. The procedure for determining this is shown in the FAQ article I have linked you to. Since you are not able to confirm your tongue weight, please understand that anything I recommend will merely be an educated guess. I would recommend going with a 1,200 lb max capacity system to provide some cushion, since actual ready-to-roll tongue weight is not known....

  • Adjusting Weight Distribution System to Apply More Tongue Weight to Front Tow Vehicle Axle
  • To determine if you have the correct system for your trailer tongue weight, you should determine the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. The weight of any gear stowed behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle also needs to be considered as tongue weight. I have linked you to an FAQ article that shows a few ways to determine the tongue weight. You will need to ensure that the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer does not exceed the 1,000 lb maximum...

  • Can 2016 Toyota 4Runner w/ 4700lb Tow Rating Tow 4550lb Lance Travel Trailer
  • As long as the fully loaded and ready to tow weight of the trailer is less than the 4700 lb towing capacity of your 4Runner, you can tow the trailer as long as the factory installed hitch has sufficient capacity. The hitch should have a ratings sticker affixed to it that lists its capacity. I'd strongly recommend you install a transmission cooler like # D13503 to provide protection for the transmission. Since you're so close to the towing capacity of the vehicle itself, I'd do my best...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Chucking, Jerking, and Tugging on Light Utility Trailer Carrying Two ATVs
  • I believe that I can help you with the tugging you are experiencing. First, consult your vehicles owners manual for the towing capacities and recommendations, and to make sure you are not exceeding those capacities. Next, there is a formula you can use to determine the best place for your axles. If your tongue weight is less than 10 percent of the gross trailer weight you will first determine what 10 percent of the tongue weight is. 180 pounds is what you will need. Subtract the actual...

  • Can 2014 Toyota Highlander Safely Tow a Fully-Loaded Lance 1985 Travel Trailer
  • According to the Lance website their model 1985 travel trailer has a dry weight of 3660-lbs and a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 5700-lbs. Suitability of your 2014 Toyota Highlander for towing this trailer will depend on how it is equipped. The inline 4-cylinder version has a maximum towing capacity of only 1500-lbs, which makes it unusable for pulling this trailer. But if you have the V6-equipped Highlander it has a maximum rated towing capacity of 5000-lbs. Even if your equipment...

  • Can a 2011 Honda Odyssey Tow a 3200 Pound Travel Trailer Using Weight Distribution and ATF Cooler
  • Equal-i-zer is a brand that makes weight distriubution systems. But just like with Kleenex and tissue, people use the term equalizer to mean any weight distribution hitch. The actual Equal-i-zer systems do have built in sway control so I would assume that is what he has. I checked the owners manual online for the 2011 Honda Odyssey and found the following information. With 2 passengers and using a transmission cooler the vehicle has a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight capacity. With...

  • Length Of Spring Bars on The Curt and Pro Series Weight Distribution Systems
  • Most weight distribution spring bars are about the same length. Typically they are either 29 or 31 inches in length. The spring bars of the Curt # C17062 would be 30-5/8 inches, and the bars of the # PS49903 would be 31-1/4 inches.

  • Will Spring Bars Rated Above Trailer Tongue Weight Make for a Stiff Ride
  • First, when calculating tongue weight, after you have the tongue weight of the trailer, loaded and ready to tow, you then have to add to that the weight of anything you are carrying behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. If you have 200 pounds of gear at the very back of the truck, you add that in as tongue weight. What you are experiencing is a stiff ride because the spring bars are rated much higher than are needed based on the information you have provided. Your tongue weight is...

  • Should 1 or 2 Bar-Style Friction Sway Control Units be Used on a 7,000 Pound Trailer
  • Basically, one friction-style sway control can be used for trailers with up to 6,000-lb GTW. If your trailer's GTW is between 6,000 lbs and 10,000 lbs, you will need two sway-control units, one on each side of the trailer. You will also want to use two units if your trailer is 26 feet or longer. The problem is that with the higher weights or with longer trailers the friction bar style sway control unit would not be effective and you would still have a sway problem. The Pro Series...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System For 3500 Lb Trailer With 400 Lb Tongue Weight
  • The Pro Series Weight Distribution System w Friction Sway Control, part # PS49903, is designed to be used with systems that have a tongue weight between 750 and 1,000 lbs tongue weight. Using a system that has much heavier duty spring bars like the # PS49903 may result in a stiff ride and a bouncing trailer. Using a system rated too low will make the system virtually useless. I recommend the Pro Series Weight Distribution System w/ Friction Sway Control, part # PS49901. This system...

  • Is Air Suspension System Needed When Towing Trailer With 2010 Silverado Z71 4x4
  • When you tow with your 2010 Chevrolet Silverado, there are a few things to consider. If a trailer weighs more than 50 percent of the towing vehicle's weight then weight distribution is recommended. If you are experiencing sag on your truck due to the trailer tongue weight then weight distribution would help with that as well. I have attached a helpful article that explains weight distribution you can check out. Air bags are not designed to eliminate the sag due to a heavy trailer tongue...

  • Weight Distribution System for Towing a 21 Ft Travel Trailer with a 2011 Nissan Frontier

The spring bars in this system are rated to handle tongue weights from 750 to 1000 lbs and when you add the weight of the weight distribution system components and any weight you will be loading behind the rear axle of your truck, your tongue weight is going to end up somewhere right in the middle of that tongue weight range which is ideal...

  • Weight Distribution for a Rockwood Roo 233S with Dry Tongue Weight of 585 Pounds
  • When choosing a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Based on the information you have provided the trailer will weight 6,205 pounds if loaded to capacity. This could make the tongue weight of just the trailer between 585 and 930 pounds (up to 15 percent...

  • Recommended Methods to Reduce Trailer Tongue Weight
  • You may be able to adjust the loaded trailer's tongue weight (TW) enough by changing the position of the riding mower and other items on the trailer. If the trailer is long enough for you to keep the mower further back, further away from the trailer tongue, this will reduce the TW to some degree. Ideally TW will be 12-15-percent of the trailer GVW. You can measure TW using a scale like # 5780 or by one of the other methods outlined in the article I included for you. I do understand...
