Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Video Transcript for Pro Series RB3 Weight Distribution System Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Pro Series RV 3 Weight Distribution System with shank. Rated at a 10,000 lbs. gross trailer weight and a 750 lbs. tongue weight. Part Number PS49582 You've decided you need a weight distribution system. The Pro Series RV 3 system is an economical choice for you. It comes with a adjustable weight distribution shank, the head assembly but you will have to provide your own hitch ball.

You need to make sure it has an inch and a quarter shank. It also comes with the round spring bars, a link up chain, the snap life brackets and the tools to use with the snap lift brackets. The pin and clip for the shank is also included. It comes with 7 washers. A little tilt here at the head, provides a lot of tilt here at the spring bar. Each washer added to the head lowers the spring bar by an inch and a half.

The lower our spring bar, the more tension we add to the system. The system features 9 switch links to help up us further fine-tune our tension. The round tapered spring bars are going to flex appropriately over uneven terrain for a more controlled and smooth ride. It's a no drill installation. Our snap up brackets simply clip unto our trailers 8 brain with the included hardware.

The head is compatible with a Pro Series Friction sway control. If you'd like to add that , you would need to pick it up separately with part number 83660. It's made with a welding steel construction with a powder coat finish, so its going to resist rust and corrosion. As with all weigh distribution systems , it evenly distributes weight over the axles of the tow vehicle and the trailer for more stability and control. For stability and control we want our tow vehicle to remain as close to stock height as possible. I've gone ahead and disconnected my weight distribution system.

Let's go ahead and take a measurement. Here in the rear, I'm going to measure from the ground, up to the under side of the wheel well, and I've got about 39 and 3 quarters of an inch. Here in the front, we've got about 38 and 3 quarters of an inch. Now, we'll record these measurements so we have something to compare it to, when we do hook up our weight distribution. Now I've got my trailer hooked up with no weight distribution. Let's go ahead and take a look. Here in the rear, I'm squatting almost 2 inches. Here in the front, we've raised up almost an inch. All this extra weight can cause issues with your handling, traction and tire wear. Weight distribution will help with that. Let's go ahead and hook it up. Now with our weight distribution hooked up, let's go ahead and check our measurements. Here at the rear, we're back to stock, which is great, we want to see that or at least fairly close. Here at the front, we're also back at stock. Now, let's walk through the set up. First thing you need to do is, make sure that our trailer is fully loaded and leveled and our tow vehicle is fully loaded. Next, we want to install our adjustable shank. It could be installed in either the rise or drop position. Then we're going to install our head with the included hardware and we need to make sure that our ball is no more than an inch higher than the top of our leveled trailer's coupler. Then we can install our spring bars and that's going to help us determine our location for our snap up brackets. We want to make sure that our chain runs vertical to our snap up brackets as you see here, and also that our snap up brackets don't interfere with our propane tanks, where our battery box is. If it interferes with any of these, they may need to be relocated. Now we can install enough washers on our spacer rivet, so that our spring bars run parallel with the bottom of our trailer's A-frame. When hooking up our chain to the snap up brackets, we want to make sure to use no less that five links. Then we can put in our safety pin. Now we're ready to head on down the road for a smoother more enjoyable ride. That's going to complete our look at the Pro Series RV 3 Weight Distribution System with shank. Rated at a 10,000 lbs. gross trailer weight and a 750 lbs. tongue weight. Part number PS49582.

This system worked out pretty well for me. Initially, I had it installed and adjusted by the RV dealer. However when I changed vehicles, I was able to make the adjustments myself with the easy to follow video on this site. Having had an Equalizer before, I would probably buy this style again because I personally think it's easier to put on and remove. I 316915

Great product easy to install except I had difficulty determining whether or not both conical washers went on the top bolt; I just assumed another had to go on the bottom but the picture clearly shows both go on the top bolt. Once I figured that out the rest of the installation went without a hitch; no pun intended. The video I viewed a couple of days before helped immensely with the installation. Great price and tremendous free/fast delivery via UPS. Have ordered other products and each time no problem even with a return on one of them. Thank you E-trailer! 161426

I have a 2011 Dodge Nitro 4.0 liter compact SUV, which I am using to tow our Mighty Lite travel trailer. I needed a good weight dist. hitch to accomplish handling the 3850 GVWR of the trailer. This system brought up the towing capacity of our Nitro to 5000 lbs., and installs much easier than I expected! We had no sway problems during our 2 journeys with this system so far, even with the high winds we encounter up in the CA. high desert area where we live. My one complaint would be the heavy weight of the solid steel shank which will make you grunt when lugging it out from the shank, but since this hitch is rated up to 10,000 lbs. I guess that is to be expected! Otherwise, My I am VERY happy with the durability of this product, and the price was great. 228819

The hitch is doing great! Another nice thing about it are the grease fittings provided on the springbar sockets, allowing for quick lubrication of the springbars while hitch is installed. Great price for a great product!

The hitch works great. I'm not very mechanical but I was able to get the hitch put together with help from my brother. I've only used the hitch once so far but had no issues. Once it is all together it is very easy to use. 406433

This system was used with a RAV4 and a 14 foot tow behind camper. I would give 5 stars regarding the system's intended performance for weight distribution. My one reservation related to the requirement to jack the tongue up so high in order to reach the desired chain link. With one less link we experienced times when the lower end of the arms/U bolts dragged when going over things like speed bumps. 312908

Hitch works better than I expected. It arrived on time and in perfect shape. If I had a complaint, it would be that the instructions are a little vague and the list of needed tools is wrong. I happen to have the experience and tools to interpret the instructions and install it correctly, but first timers should really have it professionally installed. It's a safety thing. 285660

Review from a similar Pro Series RB3 in Weight Distribution

Can't speak highly enough of eTrailer.com's customer service. I had accidentally ordered the incorrect product spec for my setup (2015 F150 towing a 8.5x20 ATC toy hauler) and they were able to get me the correct product within the same week and provided an easy process for returning the incorrect hitch. Regarding the hitch itself, installation was a breeze, though I had to get a couple new tools due to the standard sizing of the nuts bolts, rather than metric. It would be very helpful if the instructions posted online would have a required tool listing with specific sizes required so you can be prepared ahead of time. After installing the hitch and taking initial measurements, it was very easy to fine-tune to get the setup perfect. Before installing the hitch, my truck would sit nearly 1.5 inches higher up front and 3 inches lower in the back with the trailer hooked up compared to stock, with very light steering feel when going down the road. With the hitch installed and dialed in, the front sits back at the stock height and only 1.75 inches lower in the rear, creating an essentially flat ride profile, and the trailer itself is perfectly level. Riding down the road the difference in feel is amazing. Much better steering response without the "light" feeling, tracks much more planted when going down the highway, and bumps and undulations in the road surface are absorbed much more smoothly now that both the truck and the trailer are sharing the workload. 322233

Great WD hitch - Great price- Prompt Shipping. Instructions were easy to follow, worked perfectly the first time. Night and day Towing experience. 2003 Suburban towing 21' keystone Hideout 3750 lbs, with tw of 600lbs the truck has soft OEM spring set up, and sits low already. First added air shocks to get rid of the sag, but the addition of the WD hitch made all the difference, before WD had to run 140lbs of pressure just to maintain ride height, now I only run 40lbs in shocks now and she sits perfect, not to mention Steering is normal and all the jerky pushing and pulling is gone its nice and smooth now. 185252

The system was relatively easy to install (read the instructions!). We have a Toyota Tundra which we use to tow a travel trailer. First used it with a 21 ft Micro Minnie (ca. 4,000 Lbs), and now we use it with a 27-ft Airstream, which weighs around 6000 Lbs. It makes a world of difference! The trailer tracks very well, and we have no need for additional sway control. Great investment! 564218

I recently installed a new trailer hitch on my 2002 Tundra Limited. I needed a receiver for the hitch as I intended to tow a 5000 lb boat and trailer combo. I was unsure of the drop needed for the trailer (which I had not yet seen) and felt the PS 49683 receiver was just the ticket! This setup is HEAVY DUTY! Proper height and drop setup is a breeze. Well made and should provide years of service. George from etrailer is excellent with his email communication and has kept me advised of the order status throughout the entire process from order to delivery. 541609

With your fully loaded trailer an any cargo in the bed of your Ram truck behind the rear axle, I think you'd be right towards the top of your limit with the smaller system and the larger system can be adjusted as needed for lighter loads. This system does require a hitch...

  • Replacement Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Stolen Husky WD Components
  • Sorry to hear about your weight distribution system getting stolen. Due to the price of the individual parts you need (head, ball and shank) it is most likely going to be a better option to replace the entire system. We only have the one replacement Husky head # HT31516 and when you combine it's price with a new shank like # RP3215 you are at the price of some systems. Actually a Pro Series Round Bar system like part # PS49583 would cost almost as much as just one of the above mentioned...

  • Replacement Lower Capacity Spring Bars for Pro Series 1,000 Pound Weight Distribution
  • The Pro Series weight distribution systems rated for 1,000 pounds tongue weight actually have a capacity of 750 to 1,000 pounds tongue weight. Despite this range it is still too high for a tongue weight of 585 pounds. However, you also have to add the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the vehicle to the trailer tongue weight. So if you have 165 pounds behind the rear axle of the vehicle that would get you to 750 pounds. There are lower capacity bars but they would not...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for a Truck with Slide-In Camper Towing a Horse Trailer
  • Given that you have a slide-in camper it can be hard to determine how much of the weight is behind the rear axle. So what I recommend is to determine how much of the camper is behind the rear axle; half, 30 percent, whatever it happens to be and then take the weight of that much of the campers total weight and apply it to the trailers tongue weight to get a good estimate. So lets say the camper weighs 1550 pounds and half of it is behind the rear axle. You would add 775 pounds to the...

This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use. If your loaded tongue weight is...

  • Recommended Pro Series Weight Distribution System for 2008 Jayco Jayflight 17 Foot Camper
  • The Pro Series RB2 Round Bar Weight Distribution Kit with Shank # 49569 or the Pro Series RB3 Weight Distribution System with Shank # PS49582 are the best fit options for your 2008 Jayco Jayflight and 1999 Toyota 4Runner. The difference between these systems is the way the bars connect into the head. The RB3 is the more common style and allows grease to be added with integrated grease zerks. These two systems are a good fit for your trailer's tongue weight once loaded for travel and...

  • How Far Back From Center of Ball Hole Does Chain Hanger of Pro Series Weight Distribution Mount
  • In order to install a the Pro Series weight distribution system part # PS49582, the distance from the center of the ball to the end of the bracket requires a minimum of 33 inches. In some cases, tongue modification or relocation of items such as LP tanks or Batteries, etc. may need to be done to install the system. Or, if that is not an option you could install Reese Chain Hangers # RP58305. These will install onto the outsides of the trailer frame and would not interfere with anything...

  • Comparing Pro Series Weight Distribution Systems PS49582 and PS49902
  • The two systems you are interested in, # PS49902 and # PS49582 are nearly identical. The difference is that # PS49902 comes with sway control and a 2-5/16 inch ball (if the trailer takes a 2 inch ball you would need # A-90). With system # PS49902 you would need to add those items. Both systems are rated for 550 to 750 pounds tongue weight and 10,000 pounds gross trailer weight. If it were me I would just go ahead and get system # PS49902 because you would not need to add anything. These...

  • Can Pro Series RB3 part # PS49582 Be Reversed When in Installed
  • Yes, the Pro Series RB3 part # PS49582 like a lot of weight distribution systems out there can be used while you are reversing the truck and trailer. The key is that you only back up in a straight line. Slight turns are okay but if you end up jackknifing the trailer you'd break a spring bar most likely.

  • Can Weight Distribution be Used on Aluminum Boat Trailer with 2013 Infiniti QX56
  • So there are a couple of things to look at for your situation. First, boat trailer tongue weights are often lower than travel trailers or utility trailers of the same gross weight. This is because the motors at the backs of boats are the heavy and lower the weight at the front. Typically tongue weight is 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. But on a boat trailer it can be less. Also, if you have cargo loaded behind the rear axle of your Infiniti QX56 that can make the tongue...

  • Recommended Pro Series RB3 Weight Distribution System for 2006 Starcraft Hybrid Antigua
  • The most important factor to consider when choosing a weight distribution system is the total tongue weight of your setup. This includes both the loaded tongue weight of your 2006 Starcraft Hybrid Antigua, along with any added cargo weight coming from behind the rear axle of your Toyota Tacoma. • Hitch Ball Recommendation for the Pro Series RB3 Weight Distribution System # PS49582
  • The Pro Series RB3 Weight Distribution System # PS49582 that you referenced requires the use of a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch shank. Using a hitch ball with a smaller diameter shank will cause damage to the head of the system. My uncle had a shop install a hitch ball with too small of a shank on it in his WD system and the extra movement caused the head assembly to crack. For a hitch ball you will want the part # C40030 to use with the # PS49582.
