Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Included Trailer Sway Bar

The included friction-style sway control reduces trailer sway caused by winds, passing traffic, curving roads, or sudden maneuvers. As soon as your trailer begins to move out of line, the friction pads inside the unit will slide against one another and create resistance to help prevent further side-to-side movement.

The Curt round bar weight distribution system is installed with the included friction sway control arm

Having a trailer sway bar allows you to easily dial in the amount of tension with the turn of a handle. If it's too loose, the friction pads won't have enough contact against the telescoping arm to control sway effectively. On the other hand, if you crank the handle clockwise, making the friction pads work harder than they need to, your ride will be a bit too rigid.

While its adjustability is nice (even if it takes you a few trips to get it just right), this sway bar doesn't play well with surge-type actuators, and it will have to be removed when backing up and any time you tow on wet or slippery roads.

By the way, if your trailer is really tall, long, or heavy, or if you tow through a lot of windy areas and sway is still an issue - even after you've tightened the unit to the max - you can always add another sway bar onto the other side of this hitch. The hitch head is built with mounting holes on both sides, so you can run 2 sway controls at the same time to really hold your trailer in line.

Adjusting the Head Tilt

A close-up image of the Curt MV hitch head shows the rivet and washers during installation

  • Adding washers adds tension, but it's not a case of "the more the merrier"
  • Stacking washers can be a pain, but you only need to do it once, or if your tongue weight changes

When you install this system, you'll have to adjust the tilt of the head to ensure proper leverage. To do this, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert it into the head assembly. Once the spacer is in place, tighten the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank. To check if your truck and trailer are level, you'll need to hook up and release your tongue jack. If you find that the rear of your truck is still sagging, add washers to increase leverage. If it looks like too much weight has been taken off your truck's rear axle and is sitting on your front axle, try removing a few washers.

While the washer-stacking method allows you to fine-tune the setup at the time of installation, it's going to require some patience. It can be time consuming because, if you don't get everything right the first time (which, you probably won't), you'll have to take the head unit apart to adjust the washers. You might have to adjust a few chain links to get the tension in the bars just right too. Not to mention that you might have to repeat this process if your tongue weight changes or if you swap out your tow vehicle.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 8,800 lbs Trailer
Hey David thanks for the information! I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control item # EQ37120ET. This system has a tongue weight range of 800 lbs - 1,200 lbs so you'll be covered if you load your trailer up with more weight. The built-in 4-point sway control will keep your trailer in line with your F-150 when you're going down the road and make a sudden move or get passed by a semi. I really like the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Hitches like item...

  • Troubleshooting a Curt WDS That Binds When Turning
Hey Bruce, I have not personally heard of that but I did go ahead and check out the instructions to see if anything like that was mentioned. What I think is happening is you have your chains adjusted up too high. Curt specifies that the Curt Round Bar Weight Distribution System w/ Friction Sway Control # C17063 should have a minimum of 5 links between the lift bracket and spring bar. I recommend going through the adjustment instructions again and make sure that the height is correctly set.

  • Availability of Replacement Head for Older Draw-Tite Weight Distribution System Made in 1970s
The head design for the Draw-Tite (and now Reese) weight distribution system has changed over the years, so your existing round spring bars won't be compatible with the current style head (which would be the Reese part # RP58112). The original head to match what you currently have is no longer made. This means your only option will be to upgrade to an entirely new weight distribution system. If you can tell me the capacity of your existing system, or the loaded weight of your trailer,...

  • How to Adjust Chains on Curt Weight Distribution System to Stop Grinding Noise
If you have a Curt Weight Distribution System with chains such as # C17063, there should not be grinding noises when turning coming from the chains and this can be adjusted by switching the links in the lift chains. You can adjust the head tilt for correct chain length. I've attached a photo that shows how the chains should be set up. This comes from the directions, which I've also attached for you to take a look at.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch That Allows For Backing Up
There are weight distribution hitches that do allow for backing up while still hitched up, like the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37100ET. Each of these hitches have about a 400lb tongue weight range so it's important that you measure for your trailer's fully loaded tongue weight so that you can choose the correct hitch. With your trailer being a car hauler you most likely have large variations in weight so a better, but more expensive, option would...

The reason why the Curt Adjustable Weight Distribution Shank # C17100 lists the maximum drop at 3 inches is because the maximum measurement in the drop position from the inside top edge of the receiver tip of your hitch to the top of the ball of a compatible Curt round bar systems like the Curt MV Weight Distribution System w/ Friction Sway Control # C17063 is 3 inches. To my understanding you'll want to use the standard clamp system that comes with the weight distribution system like what we see with the Curt MV # C17063 you were looking at when it comes to an aluminum trailer simply because aluminum frames aren't as robust as steel so drilling through them for a bracket kit like part # C17005 could damage the integrity of the frame. If you need a 2" ball, for example, you can use the 2" Hitch Ball # A-90. Just keep in mind different sized hitch balls have different capacities, and the # A-90, for example, has a 10k capacity. • Best Weight Distribution and Sway Control for Casita Travel Trailer
Based on the weight range of Casita travel trailers the best weight distribution and sway control we have would be the Reese Strait Line part # RP66082 which has a tongue weight range of 200-600 lbs and features the best sway control at fighting sway before it starts. Most sway control devices help minimize sway that is happening but the Strait Line works to prevent it by applying pressure to keep the trailer as straight behind the tow vehicle as possible.
