Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Friction Sway Control

The included friction-style sway control unit reduces trailer sway caused by winds, passing traffic, curving roads, or sudden maneuvers. As soon as your trailer begins to move out of line, the friction pads inside the unit touch one another and create resistance to help prevent further side-to-side movement. To install the unit, simply mount the ball-and-plate assembly to your trailer's frame with the included self-tapping screws, and attach the sway control ball to the head of your weight distribution hitch. Then attach the bar to both of the balls and secure it in place with the included clips.

Forged Steel Spring Bars

The round spring bars are made from forged steel, giving them a distinct advantage over typical cast steel bars. Forging is a process where thermal and mechanical energy are applied to the steel, resulting in a finished product that is more resilient to impacts and is stronger in terms of shear strength. Simply put, these spring bars do a superior job of helping to hold your trailer in line because of their added strength and durability.

Built-In Grease Zerks

Built-in grease zerk on the Curt weight distribution system head assembly

The system's head features 2 built-in grease zerks so that you can easily lubricate the spring bars without having to remove them from the head assembly. The grease zerks are located on each of the shafts that encase the spring bars. Simply use a grease gun (sold separately) to inject grease into each of the zerks.

Overall this is a good weight distribution hitch. I had a previous hitch but I needed a higher rating so I got this one. I stuck with the curt brand because I liked my old one so much. I have towed my campers from Ohio all the way to Texas, Florida, Colorado, and Maine. I will have to say I will stay with the Curt brand but there are a few things they could fix.

PROS: easy assembly
Torsion bars are easy to put in
Very sturdy
Sway control works like a charm(no creaking eitber)

CONS: Hard to pull on the release for the torsion bar
Very small notch where the chains sit and they keep slipping when i try to pull the chains up for tension

by:

Curt could package their product better. Box was was busted apart and washers missing. Instructions ripped apart from the shipping. No big deal other than that. Satisfied with my order.

by:

My package showed up torn up and not sure if I'm missing parts because there's no instructions included. Makes it very hard to install. And when i try to call your number (Tried three times) i get some medical device number. Very disappointing as i wanted to install this weekend.

Comments
It does not help when the package comes damaged and missing instructions. I will have our customer service team reach out to you.

by:

Works great, easy to install and leveled out my pickup. I can definitely tell a difference driving because I have so much more control of the vehicle through my stand wheel and braking by adding this weight distribution system.

by:

Excellent thank you. It kept my trailer straight and safe while crossing the country

by:

etrailer was great to work with. When our package was lost by UPS we notified Matthew and he took action right away. Our package arrived yesterday and we didn't even know that UPS dropped it off. I just happened to take the trash out and noticed the package by our front door. Had no idea how long the package was there and we had been home all day.

by:

After a year and a dozen or so trips with this system I gave up and went with a different product that has been much better for me. Weight distribution never seemed to be sufficient and the sway control was nearly non-existent. I hate to think that I put myself and my family at risk just to save a couple hundred bucks by going with this system instead of something that worked for us. I can't say that I'd recommend this to anyone. If you're trying to save money because this system is more expensive...all I can say is that you get what you pay for.

by:

Gave it 4 stars because I have never owned one before so I have nothing to compare it to. It works good, really seems to ground the truck. I have a Ford F250 superduty crew cab with a 8 1/2 ft Lance light camper that sticks almost 2' past the bumper and I pull a 18' open trailer with a race car on it.

by:

Couldn’t be happier with this product. Works as advertised. I was told by some people that I would get what I paid for, meaning I needed to spend $500 to $600 to get quality, not in this case. I tow a 30 foot camper with a Dodge Ram 1500 with no issues at all. I wish I had a picture of the truck without the weight distributor hooked up....it’s not good!!!

by:

Works as expected, nothing over and above normal. The first time I used it one of the spring clips that retain the torsion bar in the sleeve broke and I was directed to buy a repair clip. Not impressed!

by:

Works perfectly have tow 12 different RV’s very stable hitch

by:

Just received it a few hours ago. Box was ripped on one end but considering g how heavy it is, they must have anticipated it as it was wrapped in several layers of plastic. Very heavy duty. Will be installing in a few days when we pickup our trailer. Glad I put the airbags in my coils as my truck will need the extra support, just for the hitch setup

by:

Very happy with the hitch. And service & shipping were excellent. Arrived within just a few days of ordering, packaging was great. Will be a return customer.

by:

This was probably overkill for my towing needs, but this hitch is outstanding. Stopped all the bouncing over bumps. Smooth ride with great anti sway performance.

by:

Ups shipping was horrible box was ripped open , dropped. Hopefully there’s no missing hardware when I put it together. There is chips out of the hitch, and scratch marks on the bars

Does what it’s supposed to do.
Makes
pulling my trailer way safer,& easier.

by:

Had to buy a longer drop shank, but this setup made towing my 34' enclosed across country safe and easy. Great product. I would buy again if i needed a weight distribution and anti sway for bumper pull trailer. Leveling and anti sway is great

by:

People who stand behind their products Excellant customer service

I haven't received my package yet, it was due to arrive on 6/1/2022...

Awesome customer service and fast shipping. A pleasure doing business with you

by:

Perfect,as described, fast shipping.Box extremely heavy and I can see why some of the boxes get damage during shipping. No fault from etrailer, maybe Curt can make it a two box shipment to lighten the weight per box. Excellent product.

by:

Quality parts and service

by:

This thing shipped so fast! The box was almost completely destroyed when it arrived, which is no fault of etrailer, curt should just invest in heavier duty cartons to ship their products in. All pieces were still there though and is exactly as ordered. As far as the weight distribution hitch itself, it's a great hitch and works beautifully. I personally use 2 anti sways to get the most out of this hitch since it's able to utilize two. One of the best budget friendly weight distribution hitches on the market.

by:

Great cutomer service. I was missing a few items and it was addressed immediately. I will use etrailer for all my towing needs!!

by:

Perfect setup for 28 ft camper.

A weight distribution system does distribute some of the trailer's tongue weight to the vehicle's front axle but determining how much it actually moves up there is a little involved since there isn't a way to show this on a tongue weight scale. • Why Can't You Back Up with Curt MV Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control Installed
The reason you can't back up with the Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17063 installed does primarily have to do with the friction sway bar that's attached. The tension that would be applied to the bar when backing up could potentially bend/damage the bar which might also lead to damage on the spring bars. This technically isn't an issue if you plan on backing up in a straight line but since backing up a trailer isn't the easier thing in the world, and weight distribution systems aren't...
