Jay Low Fit

Side-Loading, J-Style Carrier

Jay Low Kayak Carrier

This Yakima J-style kayak carrier can be adjusted to hold 1 or 2 boats on your roof rack. The space-saving design holds your boats on their sides to free up roof rack space, and built-in ramps make it easy to load from the side of your vehicle. The lightweight, rust-resistant aluminum rack includes tie-downs for securing 1 kayak. The padded cradles protect your kayaks during transport, and the upright arms fold down when you're not using the carrier.

Adjustable Upright Arms and Built-in Ramps

Jay Lo Ramp

When you're ready to go on the road, lift your kayak up and onto these J-style cradles. The integrated ramps will help guide your boat as you load it from the side of your vehicle.

Yakima Jay Low Arm

Each cradle has an integrated cam lever that allows you to adjust the upright arm. Simply release the lever, rotate the arm to the desired position, and close the lever. These levers allow you to move the upright arms from the J-style position to the vertical position, and they allow you to fold the arms down for storage when the carrier is not in use.

Jay Low Kayak Carrier

This carrier holds 1 kayak in the J-style position. To carry 2 kayaks, just move the upright arms from the J-style position into the vertical position. In this configuration, one kayak will rest directly on your crossbars.

Foam padding on the arms and rubber on the base helps to cushion your watercraft during transport and also protects the hull from scratches and scuffs. Grooves in the base help grip your boat.

Tie-Down Straps

Yakima Jay Low Tie Downs

Two nylon tie-downs are included to secure 1 kayak to your roof rack crossbars. Loop these straps through your crossbars, around the hull of your boat, and through the arms. The straps have cam buckles that let you tighten the straps and secure your boat. The cam buckles are rubber coated to prevent damage to your kayak or vehicle when you're using the straps.

Yakima Jay Low Bow Stern

Two bow/stern tie-down straps with stainless steel hooks let you anchor your boat to the front and rear of your vehicle. Tying down your boat's bow and stern helps to prevent the boat from shifting forward or backward during transport. And ratchet pulleys allow you to easily adjust the tension of the straps to ensure the boat is secure on your roof. A protective sleeve on each strap helps protect your bumper from scratches and friction damage.

You will need additional tie-down straps and bow/stern tie-downs (sold separately) to secure a second boat to your roof rack and to your vehicle.

Tool-Free Installation

Yakima Jay Low Mounted

The mounting clamps on these cradles fit most crossbar configurations without the adapters. To install, simply place the cradles on your crossbars and turn the integrated handles until the mounting clamps are tightly secured. If you have round crossbars, the included adapters will provide a secure fit, preventing the cradles from twisting or sliding on the bars.

Jay Low Lock Core Location

Each cradle has a removable plug that you can replace with a Yakima Same Key System (SKS) core (sold separately) so you can lock the system to your roof rack. Yakima's SKS cores can be swapped out to make all your Yakima locks keyed alike.

The Yakima JayLows are ready to go out the box and very easy to set up. They attached to our vehicle’s factory crossbars with ease and seemed secure on the road with little to no movement with kayaks attached. We haven’t tested them on the highway yet, but I’m confident that they’ll be fine as long as you strap the kayaks correctly and use tie downs. I’m extremely happy with the JayLows and I’m considering purchasing another set if we get a third kayak. I HIGHLY recommend that you watch the videos on setting up and securing kayaks on the racks prior to first use.

- Y04073

The Yakima products are doing great. Just got home yesterday from a 18 day trip using them in Michigan's upper peninsula. Love them. Great products. Thanks again.

- Y04073

These make it easier for one person to load a kayak up on the roof by themselves. We have used them for a whole year and they are holding up well so far.

- Y04073

I bought from etrailer because of the excellent information you provided about the Jaylow Kayak carrier before I made the purchase. Very informative. I knew what I was getting and how to use it. Also appreciated being able to buy the lock inserts that match the locks on Yakima bars I have on my pickup.

- Y04073

This kayak rack system is designed very well and can transport either 1 or 2 kayaks at a time. To me, it was worth it to spend a little extra and have the flexibility to transport a second kayak when needed. The included instructions are clearly written and helpful. If you have any questions about installation, etrailer.com has a "Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier Review" helper video. You can find additional installation videos on the manufacturer's website.

- Y04073

I really like these kayak racks. They come fully assembled, and they installed easily on the aero crossbars of the factory roof rack on my 2015 Toyota Tacoma. The "ramps" on the front really do help in loading the kayaks, because you don't have to lift the kayak up as high. I opted to get two sets for our two kayaks, rather than try to transport two with one set of racks, because it seemed like it would be much easier to load. I agree with some other reviewers that the directions are a little cryptic, but the installation process is pretty self-evident. I also agree that the provided S hooks are a bit small (I'm going to replace them with carabiners), but these are minor issues. Overall, the racks are very sturdy, and I like the fold down feature. I also got the locks (not available for many of the Thule racks) because it seems like a small investment to protect the larger investment. My wife and I took our kayaks to a lake today using the new racks, and had no problems loading, unloading, or tying them down. Loading is a two-person job, however, at least for us and our 12-foot boats on a pick-up truck. We carry a folding two-step stepladder to make the reach easier. These racks are well worth the cost, and I would certainly recommend them to my fellow kayakers. And great service from etrailer, as always.

- Y04073

These work great. I went ahead and picked two sets for our two kayaks rather than try to wrestle two kayaks down to a single set. Comes with all needed straps, hooks, etc. Makes loading and unloading so simple. Being able to fold down the uprights when not in use is nice to reduce the clearance height of the overall vehicle for entering / exiting garages etc. The are a bit noisy with whistling sounds due to wind when in the empty and folded down position between 40 and 60 mph. This is well documented in other forums and reviews also. Not a deal killer, but loud enough to want to leave the sunroof closed. Note that the deflector shield does not help with this on my vehicle application.

- Y04073

Highly recommend etrailer.com. This is the second time I have used them for a product either for towing or roof racks and there service is excellent. Also they are always on the mark with regards to fit for the vehicle. The staff is very knowledgable and friendly. Would highly recommend them. I like the Yakima product I ordered and I think it looks great on the 4Runner. It was easy to install with the exception of one confusing piece of the instruction. It was not clear in the fit kit instruction manual what was being referred to adjust the spacing of the foot piece now attached to the bar (in Step 2 of installation). In addition to this etrailer video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQhsOY7zvuE this etrailer video shows it better at about minute 1:50 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IZFFJnUWc4 That screw needs to be loosened and THEN the foot will slide easily in and out when it is pushed upon. I am pointing to it with a pen in the picture in my review. Hope that helps others avoid some frustration I had. I would definitely recommend.

- Y04073

Easy to use. Does as expected. I use it to hold 4 ~ 10' Pelican kayaks on the ARE truck cap Yakima rack. Installation took less that 30 min.

- Y04073

Excellent. Easy to install and use. Tie down straps are great!

- Y04073

etrailer, specifically Matthew K - helped our family secure everything needed for wonderful camping trips. The task was difficult because of supply chain issues last spring! Thank you Matthew!!

- Y04073

These work great. Easy to install and the hold the kayak nicely. Very happy with eTrailer service!

Careful if it is windy - We took our Kayaks up the 395 from Los Angeles to Lake Tahoe and back. On the way back we hit wind gusts from the side and it ripped the factory Jeep rails right out of the roof. Because of the straps provided from the boats to the front and rear bumper they did not blow off the car entirely. It seems like the boats on their edge just catches too much wind if it comes from the side. From now on we just put the boats basically flat on the Yakima racks and that seems to work well. You have to be careful when you tie them down but I think it would have saved a $3000 repair bill to fix our roof.

- Y04073

The system has held up well and no issues so far. I use it on a Ford Escape carrying 2 10ft kayaks. Some wind noise when folded down and not in use. A very durable and secure system!

- Y04073

Easy to install. Cradles my kayaks securely. Superb value with timely shipping and delivery. My CRV is now ready for summer and transporting two kayaks!!

- Y04073

These kayak hooks are the best! I had another set by a different manufacturer but they did not fit correctly on the bars on my car. These racks have multiple adapters that allow them to work on different types of bars. Great product and great customer service!

- Y04073

I was exhausting my search for kayak carriers that would adapt to my HD Rhino Rack crossbars. I called etrailer and Sarah was patient enough with me to walk me through the options. She found the right ones , assured me they would adapt. Sure enough , they did. Thank you Sarah!

- Y04073

the product was great but the roof rack, unfortunately, slid around due to the friction-only mounting on my Honda Fit. We almost lost our kayak due to that. But there was no problem with the yy04073

I actually bought a new car, so this rack does not fit it. Im thinking of purchasing a suction cup type rack to avoid the difficulties with the friction type racks that kept sliding around.

- Y04073

Well-made high quality product. The kayak racks fit perfectly onto the roof rack of our 2018 Subaru Outback. The one downside was the difficulty in getting the hold-down straps around the top of the loop on each of the racks after the kayaks were loaded on, even when following the strapping instructions to the letter. It would be nice if there were some way of holding the strap in place on the top of the loop without it slipping down.

- Y04073

Another great Yakima product from etrailer. The total experience was such a pleasant one. They make online shopping so easy I don’t want to go to the store anymore. Highly recommend doing business with etrailer.

- Y04073

This is a nice quality rack with all of the required straps and adapters included in one kit. The only issue I have with this model is that it does not firmly fit my Malone aero style crossbars and "leans" to the rear when mounted. I doubt it will come off when snug on the cross bars but it does leaves a sloppy appearance. It also will not "straddle" the cross bar feet as shown in the mounting instructions and diagrams so both of my kayaks are left toward the middle of the roof and difficult to reach for stow and go.

Theses have been great and the down style when not in use means I can park my jeep in the garage without removing them from the bars. They have help up well and I have only removed them during the winter season otherwise it stays on the roof top.

- Y04073

I'm very impressed, but not surprised, at the quality of another Yakima product. I've somewhat placed the cart before the horse as I've not yet received the kayak I recently ordered, however, by then I will have my JayLow installed on my existing Yakima cross bars & be good-to-go. I purchased this particular kayak carrier due to the side loading feature as well as the ability to fold it down, thus I can keep it installed while parking in my garage. That of course as long as the kayak is not on top as well!

Tie-down straps permanently attached to the rounded top of the rack sure would be convenient.

- Y04073

This is a great product for the price. Good quality and good design - it is easy to add and remove from the rack and easy to configure the angle. Now if only I had more time to kayak - do you sell that?

As a fellow kayak lover - I sure wish we could sell more time to kayak!
-- Etrailer Expert Victoria B - 04/24/2020

- Y04073

I love this carrier! It was easy to install and very easy to use! I would definitely recommend or buy again if we ever get a second kayak.

- Y04073

Fantastic addition for the kayak lover. Super easy to install and looks slick too ??

- Y04073

This is mostly a great boat rack. I have an 11' kayak and the rack carries it nicely under most conditions. I upgraded my set to include the locking device, and I highly recommend it. My one gripe with this setup is that sitting a boat on its edge presents a big face to the wind, which can be very problematic with the wind gusts get high. It can, in fact, get very scary. I recently took a long road trip in the SW, and found myself crossing the highway that runs along Hoover Dam. There are permanent wind warning signs posted there, and the day I went across, the gusts were howling. I drive a Honda Element, which already has a high profile, and I seriously thought I was going to get blown off the road. I ended up taking the first exit I got to and, in that howling wind, had to pull my kayak down, remove the j-rack, and strap my boat to the crossbars, top down, to reduce the profile. I could have done that without spending the money for this rack...

  • How to Carry a Fishing Kayak on the Roof of a 2019 Toyota RAV4
Yes you can substitute for longer bars on your 2019 Toyota RAV4. The Thule WingBar Evo Crossbars 47" # TH711200 have a more factory look because they don't stick out too far. I attached a video below with this set on a 2019 Toyota RAV4 and you can see how they don't stick out too far. To go wider you will need to use the Thule Rapid Podium Feet # TH460R and the fit kit for your car # THKIT3177 The 47" bars are recommended but you can go wider as long as you don't extend past your mirrors....

You can mount 2 sets of the Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs - J-Style or Post Style - Folding - 1 or 2 Kayaks # Y04073 on a 46" roof rack, but it will be somewhat of a tight fit. The overall distance from one end of the JayLow to the other end is about 19", so you may have a little bit of the JayLow hanging over the crossbar legs which is fine. Most crossbars, aside from flush crossbars, have a spot (where the towers/legs are at) that you cannot clamp an accessory, but you will...

  • Kayak Carriers for a 2014 Acura MDX and Two 15 Foot Walden Passage Kayaks
Since you need to carry 2 kayaks on your 2014 Acura MDX I recommend using 2 of the Yakima JayLow kayak carriers, # Y04073. This is a J-style carrier that holds the kayak on its side. These carriers are a fit to the factory crossbars on your MDX. I have linked a video review of this carrier for you. Please consult the vehicle owners manual and/or Acura for the roof capacity prior to loading.

  • Carrying Two Kayaks on the Roof of a 2017 Ford Fusion
You can angle two kayak carriers towards each other to carry them on the roof at the same time. You'll need a roof rack to mount the carriers on. The Yakima JayLow, part # Y04073 is a great example of a universally compatible kayak carrier that can do this. If you don't already have a roof rack, I recommend adding the Rhino Rack Vortex kit, consisting of: Rhino Rack Vortex Crossbars, part # RRVA126B-2 Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Vortex Legs, part # RRRLKVA Rhino-Rack DK Fit Kit...

  • Kayak Carrier for a 2019 Toyota Highlander with Factory Roof Rack
I'm sure we're going to have kayak carriers that fit the factory crossbars on your 2019 Toyota Highlander but nothing is confirmed at this time. A very common and likely fit for you is the Yakima JayLow, part # Y04073. The JayLow is great for two kayaks because it's a J-style for one but can be converted to a Post-style for two. It can also be folded down when not in use. You will need extra tie-downs for the second boat. Use part # Y04031. To lock the JayLow to the crossbars use...

  • Recommended Roof Top Carrier for 2 Kayaks
For your 2 kayaks, the J-style carrier will hold your kayaks a little better than the post style. Out of the options you listed, the Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs - J-Style - Folding - Side Loading # Y04073 will give the best support to one kayak per carrier, but all options will give good support for 2 kayaks. The decision is if you can them to rest on the crossbars or on each other. The Inno model you referenced has been discontinued so I can't compare that option. I...

  • Kayak Rack for 2018 Subaru Outback Limited with Factory Roof Rack
The Yakima JayLow, part # Y04073, is a great J-style carrier that fits the factory crossbars on your 2018 Subaru Outback. All of the tie-downs are included. I like the JayLow because it can be folded down when you're not using it and it can also be adapted to carry two kayaks if you ever need it. They aren't required but I like to recommend the Malone QuickLash hood loops, part # MPG308, to make the tie-down connections easier. For another option look at the Lockrack carrier, part...

  • Can Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier be Installed on Yakima HD Bars Using T-Slot
The Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs # Y04073 doesn't have a T-Slot adapter but they do fit crossbars with max dimensions of 3-1/2" x 1-11/16". Since the Yakima HD Crossbars like the 68" # Y01158 only measure 3" wide x 1-1/2" tall you will be able to use the clamping system that comes with the JayLow to mount them to this size crossbar. If you're wanting a way to secure them a little bit more to help deter theft then I recommend adding the 2-pack lock core set # Y07202. If you're...

  • Compatibility of Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier with Rhino Rack Aero Crossbars
You can indeed use the Yakima # Y04073 JayLow kayak carrier on your Rhino-Rack aero-style crossbars. The carrier includes tie-down straps and bow/stern tie-downs. Adding the optional locks, # Y07202 is recommended.

  • Roof Rack Recommendation for 2010 Honda CR-V to Carry Two Kayaks
The roof rack I highly recommend for your 2010 Honda CR-V is from Inno because it uses 51 inch crossbars, which are the longest available for your vehicle so you have the most possible room to carry your kayaks and make it as easy as possible to load them. This roof rack consists of: - Inno Aero Crossbars # INXB130-2 - Inno Through Feet for Aero Crossbars # INXS350 - Custom Fit Kit for Inno Roof Rack Feet # INTR121 This rack has a 140 lb weight capacity which is more than enough...

  • Kayak Carrier with High Weight Capacity to Carry a Hobie Oasis Tandem Kayak
I have a solution for you, but the Yakima Rack part # Y04073 that you referenced has an 80 lb capacity that I can't recommend you exceed with the weight of your 89 lb Hobie Oasis carrier. Check out the Rhino-Rack J-Style Kayak Carrier # S510. This rack has a 99 lb capacity and can fit virtually any cross bar style. I attached a review video for more info.
