Video Transcript for Yakima Cargo Tie Downs Y05006 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number Y05006. These are the Yakima cinch straps with the padded cam buckles. You're going to get one pair, or two straps. The cinching tie downs are going to let you secure a variety of items to your cargo carrier or roof rack. This unit's going to be ideal for kayaks, canoes, surfboards, paddleboards, as well as a lot of other gear. One of the biggest advantages of this unit, or this part number, is right here, actually over the cam buckle. We're going to have a really nice rubber cover.

Now, this is going to help prevent scratches to your vehicle or scratches to your cargo. Nice, solid design allows a lot of padding around the buckle, and it really does cover the entire buckle or any portion of the buckle that would make contact with your vehicle or your gear. Underneath the rubber protector is going to be a nice cam lock buckle. That's going to hold the strap tight over your gear. This is a really simple operation. All you've got to do is take the plain end of the strap through the buckle, and simply what I'm doing there is I'm pushing down on the release lever.

That's opening up the buckle and allowing me to bring my strap through. Now, you would obviously already have this around your gear. Place the plain end through, and then you can simply just cinch it down by pulling the exposed end of the strap. Once you get that tied over your gear, you can see that I can't pull it back through the opposite way unless I push down on the release lever. Really nice design, very simple operation. Yakima uses a strong box stitch, polypropylene webbing, so their straps are very strong and durable.

You're going to get two straps, each strap's going to measure 16 feet in total length. It's going to measure one inch wide. They can be cut if needed, but that's totally up to you. Again, you're going to get one pair, or two cinch straps, and Yakima's going to cover this product with a lifetime warranty. That's going to do it for today's review of part number Y05006. .

I have ordered several products from Etrailer over the past few months-a Yakima roof rack; ski rack; kayak rack and accessories. Every product has been shipped and delivered promptly along with constant communication about timelines. I also find Etrailer has excellent videos and instructions/questions and answers about product specifications and installation. Very pleased. 321664

These straps replaced my original straps that predated (by 10 years) the rubber-coated cam-buckles. These are much easier to use with my new mounting configuration for my kayaks. The remove the concerns I had for scratching paint on my vehice or damaging my boats. Thanks for making these available at the best price on the web! 86239

Heavy-duty straps for my kayaks. Long enough to secure two boats. No worries going down the road now. 390106

Like the rubber padded metal cam buckle. It should keep the metal from gouging my kayak. The straps will be used to tie down two kayaks on top of a Thule Xsporter rack that I have attached to a utility trailer. The space under the rack will be used to carry camping gear. 76039

Great straps. Expensive but worth it for the rubber cover that doesn't need to be messed with to work the can buckle. Can be thrown around the roof of the car without scratching. 153123

Ask the Experts about this Yakima Tie Down Straps
Do you have a question about this Tie Down Strap?

  • Roof Rack and Kayak Carrier Recommendation for 2013 Honda Civic Coupe
  • The roof rack I recommend for you is the Yakima JetStream Roof Rack with 60 Inch Long JetStream Bars # Y00426, BaseLine Towers # Y00146, Fit Kit # Y06125 for the front bar, and Fit Kit # Y06143 for the rear bar. The JetStream crossbars feature an aerodynamic shape to help minimalize wind noise and keep the ride quieter than racks that use more traditional round or square crossbars. This rack is designed to fit your Civic coupe and will mount in the door well for both the front and rear...

  • Tie-down Straps Needed to Attach a Web Strap Between Two Poles and Have Adjustment
  • I thought about your application for a bit and came up with what I think may work for you, but the Yakima Cargo Tie Downs, # Y05006, probably would not be the best item for your situation. Instead the Yakima Boat and Cargo Strap Tie-Down Kit, item # Y04031, is about the same cost but has the parts that I believe will work for you.

  • Crossbar Recommendation for Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • The Yakima JayLow will fit square, elliptical, aero, factory, and round crossbars that are no bigger than 3-1/2 inches wide by 1-11/16 inches tall. The JayLow requires that crossbars be mounted at least 24 inches apart. For your 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, and since you are wanting to carry 4 kayaks on your roof rack, I recommend the Thule Square Load Bars 58 Inch # THLB58. According to Thule, you could fit up to 5 kayaks on the 58 inch bars. If you'd like longer bars, you could...

  • Can a 2012 Chevy Equinox with Factory Roof Rack Carry 2 Kayaks
  • I checked a couple of different resources and it looks like the factory roof rack and crossbars on a 2012 Chevy Equinox are rated for 150 pounds. But you will want to check the vehicle owners manual and/or Chevy to confirm that number. If it is 150 pounds you should be able to carry 2 kayaks on J-style carriers easily. The Yakima JayLow, # Y04073, is listed as a direct fit for your vehicle. You can use this carrier for 2 kayaks, one will sit on the cradles and one will need to be strapped...

  • Recommendation for Transporting 2 Kayaks on 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon with Factory Roof Rack
  • The Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier # Y04073 referenced in your question will work great for transporting your kayaks as long as the factory crossbars on your Subaru Outback Wagon are not wider than 3-1/2 inches or taller than 1-11/16 inches. There should also be a minimum crossbar spread (distance between the two crossbars) of 24 inches. You will have no issue mounting both of your kayaks with this system. You can actually safely secure both of your kayaks using just one of these systems,...

  • Could 2 Kayaks be Carried on the Darby Watersport Carriers # DTA944-968-924
  • That would depend on the width of your two kayaks. The width of the upright hitch bar of the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier w/ Hitch Mounted Load Extender and Single-Bar Roof Rack # DTA944-968-924 is 48 inches. If the width of your 2 kayaks side by side is less than that you should be good. This comes with foam block, which for two kayaks you would want a total of four of the part # DTA924. For additional straps you could get the part # Y05006.

  • Can High/Low Hitch Adapter Be Used with Yakima Four Timer Hitch Bike Rack
  • Hitch adapters like Roadmaster high/low adapter # RM-048-8, which provides 8-inches of rise or drop, will give you more clearance but all such adapters also cost you half of your hitch's rated capacity. The loss of hitch capacity from use of an adapter results from the longer distance between the hitch tube and the actual load. Extending that distance applies more leverage on the hitch tube and this results in the hitch being able to handle only half as much weight. If the combined weight...

  • If you looking for a kayak carrier that will work with factory, Aero, round, or square crossbar roof racks, then I recommend the Yakima BigStack Roof Mounted 2 Kayak Carrier # Y04041. The BigStack carrier can carry 1-2 kayaks at a time. The BigStack includes hardware and tie-down straps to help secure your kayaks to your roof rake and vehicle. The BigStack carrier can be mounted on a vehicle with a minimum crossbar spread of 24 inches. • Low Profile Roof Rack for 2017 Jeep Renegade That Allows Use of MySky Feature
  • I spoke with a representative of Yakima about using their RailBar system with the MySky on your 2017 Jeep Wrangler, and they said that you should have no problem using this. The only thing they cautioned was that accessories which clamp around the bars may interfere with the MySky opening if they hang down too low. This means you would be fine using the RailBars, which come in either # Y00450-2 or silver # Y00435-2. This highly aerodynamic system is going to give you a very quiet ride...

  • To safely secure your two kayaks for transport on the roof of your 2017 Kia Sportage, I recommend taking a look at the Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier # Y04073. This J-style carrier will mount to the factory crossbars on your vehicle and can secure 1 kayak in the J-style position or both of your kayaks at the same time in vertical position. For kit that includes additional bow and stern tie downs and center tie downs use # Y04031. Or you could get some heavy duty straps, # Y05006. Yakima also has some locking straps, # Y04048. They will need to be configured in the post-style as opposed to the J-style for two kayaks, and this is going to be perfectly safe for highway travel so long as you have the kayaks adequately tied down.
