Video Transcript for Malone Watersport Carriers MPG159 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Malone foam kayak block for truck racks. This unit can be used to replace a damaged block. You could also get multiple of these foam blocks to create your own set up. We do recommend that at least two blocks are used to safely haul one kayak. You'll notice that it has the oversize cut out that fits most extruded aluminum crossbars on truck bed ladder racks. Edge to edge going this direction, that cut out or that opening is going to measure around four inches. Going this direction it's going to measure about one and five eighths of an inch. It's a really nice design.

It's got the slit in the bottom so that way you can easily fit this over the truck bed ladder rack. When it comes to the construction, it's an EVA closed cell foam construction. And it features a nice contoured design that's going to fit the shape of your kayak. When it comes to the overall dimensions, starting with the overall length measuring edge to edge, that's going to give us a measurement of around 14 inches long. When it comes to the width, edge to edge in this direction, that's going to give us a measurement of about five and a half inched wide. Here at the end it's going to measure about four inches tall. And then at the center, at the lowest point of that contoured design, it's going to be about three and one quarter inches tall. You're going to get one block with this part number, and it is made in the USA. That's going to do it for today's look at the Malone foam kayak block for truck racks..

I sent a request on this product to confirm that it would fit my rack. The guys at etrailer checked it out, and let me know that it did. I ordered 4 of them and they work perfectly. Shipping was reasonable and quick with no issues. Will do business with them again! K 694579

I am giving the racks a five, although have to say I have not carried anything of substance on them yet. I got primarily to carry two kayaks at same time. But I am happy with how they installed, and how they look and the general apparent integrity of the product. I had a bit of a delay for delivery due to factory, which necessitated the customer service team of eTrailer to hold back the shipment until I was back at my residence. They did an excellent job with this special request, and communication was always prompt and to the point. These racks also sold for about half of the price of what I suspect is their major competition; so that was a major decision point for me. I do not at this time feel I sold myself short by not going with the more expensive brand. 739724

These foam pads worked great on my 1000 mile trip down into Baja. I bought 4 pads to secure two ocean kayaks. The pads are mounted on a TracRac TracONE Universal Truck Rack that is on my 2003 Toyota Tundra. 593258

I purchased the closed cell foam kayak pads from Malone to fit my Trac Rack ladder rack. It was not easy to locate a pad to fit the wide bars of this rack but, searching etrailers website I was able to do just that. The pads are good solid foam that is quite sturdy. On our first trip with them on I couldn't have been happier with their performance, 1,000 miles round trip and the pads didn't move at all. I would recommend these to anyone with wide bars on a rack that needs to carry kayaks. 664659

I have a Tacoma with very wide TracRac truck rack crossbars. Was looking for a way to transport my kayaks on those crossbars without damaging them. Kyle S at etrailer was the only one who provided me with accurate info regarding what would fit those crossbars - I received totally wrong info from some major kayak rack suppliers. I ordered from etrailer and in the process realized that their customer service is outstanding. I received the kayak blocks a few days after ordering them. They fit perfectly and are a quality product. etrailer should be your first choice when shopping for kayak racks and for whatever other products they carry. 424004

I use a TracRac to transport two kayaks over a truck bed filled with bicycles. First time I found a foam block that fits very well on the rack. I have coupled this product with latch strap also from etrailer.com that fits the TracRac. Quick and excellent service from online order to product delivery. 466478

The product is as described. I did not pay attention to the fact that this item was "single" not a pair as would be needed to transport a kayak. 824530

These foam racks arrived quickly and were in perfect condition. I used them immediately to transport a kayak on my truck racks, rather than taking hours to install the J racks I've been using. The foam fit nicely over the existing racks and cushioned the kayak approximately. I secured them with velcro straps to hold them in place as a security issue and tied the boat to the rack as always. I dont know of the foam pads would stay on at highway speeds by themselves. These are so quick and easy to convert the truck track bar to a kayak carrier. My only question is how many times I can put them over the racks before the foam breaks. 824507

Great. Delivered promptly and fit my truck rack perfectly. 821374

The pads worked great, the opening was perfect to get it placed on the top of my rack. I used the biggest Harbor Freight tight straps, one per pad to keep them in place without tightening them too much. Better than having someone just walk up and undo them and take off with them. I am very happy. The length is plenty as the kayaks barely sit on the entire surface area of the foam pads, I'm sure with time they might form a bit more to the bottom curves on our kayaks. 819194

by:

To tell the truth I was skeptical about the value - why it cost more than the pads I had for narrow roof bars. Turns out that in addition to fitting wider bars, it's a much heftier product: wider, bigger, denser. It will keep my boats and roof safe and well worth the extra bucks. 817277

Perfect option for hauling kayaks on a ladder rack and may be secured inside a vehicle when not in use. Used with a set of etrailer straps and this worked very well. I would recommend both products to anyone looking for an inexpensive, yet safe/secure kayak hauling method. 808910

We purchased the TracRac ladder rack to transport our kayaks and had difficulty finding affordable cradles to fit it, until we discovered them on the eTrailer website. Surprisingly, they were exactly as advertised and fit perfectly! The shipping was exceptional, quick and at a decent cost. The communications from the eTrailer team has been equally exceptional. I highly recommend this product and the eTrailer team! 807659

Fits like a charm on my TracOne racks. 799223

These are a great fit on my TracRac system. The foam height helps keep my canoe from hitting the cab roof. It has sped up my putting on and taking off of the canoes for transport by about 10 min. With the right straps, such as the CORSURF ones in the pic, the foam has the right amount of give to cushion the caone without crushing the gunnels. 798854

Simple slip over kayak keel protectors for my pickups racks. Slipped on with minimal effort 798591

- MPG159
by:

These fit the TracOne rail perfectly. Good solid quality EXCEPT manufacturer needs to learn how to make the area left on the bottom (both sides of the slit) more precise. Only two of the four I ordered are the same thickness (abt. 1/4 to 5/16") end to end. Others the dimension wanders to about half that. I buy things to last! 794438

They work perfectly on the Erickson #EM07705 ladder rack I bought. 793198

Clean cut material that matches the crossbar, should work fine when I take the kayak out. 792739

  • Kayak Carrier Recommendation for Fitting TracRac Ladder Rack Crossbars
The best way to carry kayaks on a TracRac ladder rack is using the Rhino Rack Nautic 580 Side Loading Kayak Carrier # RR580 which fits in the top channel of a TracRac SR ladder rack like what you have. The foam block solution part # MPG159 also fits the bars too but the Nautic will give a more secure solution. This also comes with the needed straps to secure the kayak as well. I also attached a review video link for more info as well.

  • Kayak Carrier for 2016 Honda CR-V with OEM Roof Rack Crossbars
You are correct. For your factory crossbars on the CR-V you can use foam blocks like the Malone Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs - Foam Block Style - 12" Long # MPG154 which will give you the components you need to secure the kayak as well. For a better hold, I recommend using a J-style carrier with your factory bars like the Swagman Contour Rooftop Kayak Carrier System with Tie-Downs - Fixed Arms - J-Style - Universal Mount # S65148. This is much better if you will be doing highway driving...

  • Kayak Carrier Recommendation to Fit Thule TracRac Ladder Rack Crossbars
The Malone Foam Block Kayak Carrier part # MPG159 is designed to fit the larger crossbar dimensions of the TracRac ladder racks. The blocks have a slit on the bottom of them so they will slide over the bars and not require you to remove the bars to install the blocks. A set of retractable ratchet straps like the # IMF103745 would be a great choice for this as well. This is the only style of kayak carrier we offer that will fit the larger bar diameters of the TracRac Ladder racks.

  • Kayak Carrier That Works With TracRac Ladder Rack
There is a solution which is going to help save your kayaks from any further damage. To mount them on your TracRac TA27000-01 I recommend using the Malone Foam Kayak Block # MPG159. These are going to fit directly over the four-inch bars on your Trac-Rac, and you would need two of them per kayak. For tie-downs you would want to use the Malone Bow and Stern Tie-Down Kit # MPG306. I've added links to review videos on both of these products for you.

  • Which Kayak Carrier Can Fit Thicker Load Bars of TracRac Kayak Carrier
The load bars of the TracRac Ladder Rack part # TH43002XT-501 that you referenced are much bigger than standard load bars found on roof racks. You'd need to use the Malone kayak carrier foam pad part # MPG159 as it can fit the bars of a TracRac ladder rack and allow you to mount 1 kayak per set of blocks. I also recommend using the Malone Bow and Stern Tie-Down Kit, # MPG306. This kit will include 2 straps to secure both the bow and stern of one kayak.

  • Will Malone Kayak Foam Block Fit TracRac G2 Crossbars
Malone doesn't list a maximum crossbar size for the Foam Kayak Block # MPG159 so I went out to our warehouse to actually test fit the block onto a TracRac crossbar, which is indeed larger than standard crossbars. I found that the block fits perfectly with even some room to spare, so there wasn't any issue getting it onto the bar. The foam block simply gets wrapped around the crossbar using the pre-cut gap on the underside. It's simply a matter of manipulating the bottom lip with your...

  • Kayak Carrier Options that Can Fit TracRac Truck Bed Ladder Rack
The load bars of the TracRac ladder racks are much thicker than standard roof rack crossbars which allows them to have the higher weight capacity but also is what prevents roof rack accessories that need to wrap around the bar from fitting.
