Video Transcript for Malone SeaWing Kayak Carrier Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Malone Seawing Kayak Carrier with tie downs. Part number MPG107MD.The Malone Seawing Kayak Carrier is a v-shaped saddle style carrier that enables you to carry up to one kayak on the roof of your vehicle. It does come with padding on both saddles to ensure the hull of your kayak won't get damaged or scratched once it's being installed. It also helps it slide in place much easier. This kayak carrier is designed to load it from the rear, and requires minimal lifting as once you get it onto the saddle all you have to do is push it into place and it's very easy. It also comes with the straps and the bow and stern tie downs to secure it to your roof. The buckles for the tie downs have this padded material behind it, also to make sure that the hull of your kayak remains protected.

This is excellent to use with most recreational and sea kayaks. It also has a nice low-profile design to it, both with and without the kayak, for garage clearance. The frame is made from a corrosion-proof construction, meaning this is going to have a nice, long life. Also we have the Jaws Universal Mounts here going around our arrow crossbars, but this will also work with square, round, elliptical, and most factory roof racks as well. There are no tools required for this installation, very easy. The overall dimensions of this are going to be 27-1/2 inches long by 6 inches wide by 4-1/2 inches tall. It has a total weight capacity of 75 pounds per kayak and this can carry up to one kayak. When comparing this with other products, one that comes up is the Swagman Exo Aero Kayak Carrier part number S65145.

Now comparing these two, the economic choice is going to be the Swagman, being slightly less expensive than the Malone Seawing. Another difference is going to be the carrying capacities. This is going to go to Swagman with 100 pound carrying capacity, while the Malone only has a 75. But as far as installation is concerned, that's gonna go to the Malone, because the Swagman has had complaints of its bolts being too long and having to be cut, because they do make contact with the customer's roof. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the Seawing, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. We have it laid out, as you would see it in the box after unwrapping it.

We'll have the two saddles here, the bow and stern tie downs with the hooks, the two tie downs for the actual kayak itself, the Jaws Universal Clamps with the turn knobs to tighten them down, and then we have two sets of hardware here. Now at this point you'll have to decide which set you're going to use. The longer is going to be what we're going to be using today since we have an arrow style bar attached to our vehicle, but if you had something like a square or a round bar, you might be able to use the smaller set. And these are just the covers for once you actually install this on your roof rack, then you would place them inside the saddles to take up that space. We're going to start by installing our rear saddle. So we'll take one of our bolts here. We'll drop it into place, pushing it all the way through, then take one of our universal clamps here and just loosely install our turn knob, like so.

Next we'll drop in our second bolt. You'll notice that it seats on the inside there. Now we can go to our vehicle and install it on our roof rack.Set it into place. Then we'll adjust it where we want the kayak to be. Once we have it tight, we'll take our fillers, put those at the top. Now we'll repeat this process for our front saddle. I'm just going to loosely install it for now, and then I'm going to double check to make sure that it's lined up. Tighten it down all the way.Now with everything tightened down and in place, we're gonna start installing our straps so we can get our kayak ready to load up. Load it through this top slot here, bring it back through the bottom and we're going to lay it off to the side for when we have our kayak installed. We'll just wrap it around it. And we'll repeat this for our rear mount as well. Now we're ready to install our kayak onto the rear. Before you do this, you want to make sure you put a mat or something on the top of your vehicle just to protect its finish. We have a mat lying around, so we'll go ahead and use it. Once you're satisfying with how it's sitting, we can remove the mat and start to secure this to our rack. Now we'll bring our straps that we laid out earlier over the top of our kayak and get them situated to where the buckle is sitting up a little bit like so. We'll repeat this for the rear strap as well. Now that we've got our kayak loaded up and our straps in place, we'll thread it through our eyelet here on the passengers side, going down through the first one, back up through the inner one, just like we did on the other side. Pull that through. Then we'll thread it through our material piece here, making sure that this is going to be facing the hull of our kayak. Open up our buckle here, thread through our strap. Now we'll repeat this process for our front strap. One everything is nice and tight, we'll tie up our excess and then go to work on our bow and stern tie downs. Now to get to work on our bow and stern tie downs ready, we'll first need to attach our hook to the line. First thread it through the eyelet like so, pull it tight. Again, pull tight, and give it a couple good tugs for good measure. Ready to attach it now.Keeping it nice and tight as we bring it up to our handle, we'll thread it through our loop here. Again, pulling tight. And we're going to come back about 12 to 14 inches making a loop and then another, wrapping that around the first, making a smaller loop, like you see there, and we'll thread our open end through that. Pull tight. Once that's where we want it, we'll tie it off like so. Then we'll tie off the rest of our excess. We'll actually use the trailer hitch as our connection point for our hook and again bring that up to our handle. And there you have it for the Malone Seawing Kayak Carrier with tie downs, part number MPG107MD.

Ask the Experts about this Malone Watersport Carriers

  • Recommended Roof Rack for 2015 Subaru Outback Compatible with Malone Kayak Carrier
If you have the flush mounted rails that run front to back on your 2015 Subaru Outback, then I recommend the following roof rack: Yakima CoreBar Crossbars - 50" Long # Y00421 SkyLine Towers # Y00148 Landing Pad 15 # Y00241 Lock Cores # Y07204 If you have the raised side rails, then I recommend the Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar Roof Rack # JA7975. Both of these options are rated for up to 165 lbs and will work well with the Malone SeaWing Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs # MPG107MD....

  • Best Way to Carry Two Kayaks on the Roof of a 2016 Ford Escape
I do have an option for you but it is very unlikely that you would be able to use two of the Malone SeaWing Kayak Carriers part # MPG107MD side by side on the roof of your 2016 Ford Escape. Instead, I recommend using an upright carrier like the Malone Stax Pro Kayak Carrier part # MPG115MD. This carrier or a similar design will give you the best chance of fitting two kayaks on the roof of your Escape in addition to being much more cost effective. They will however be a little more difficult...

  • Difference Between Malone SeaWing and MegaWing
So the big difference between the Malone MegaWing part # MPG207 and the SeaWing # MPG107MD is the weight capacity of either. The MegaWing is rated for up to 150 lbs and the SeaWing 75 lbs. You'd be fine with either as your Pelican Catch 100 has a weight of 65 lbs. Since the price is very similar going with the higher rated MegaWing seems to be the best value though.

  • Ladder and Bed Rack to Carry Kayaks on a 2016 Ford F-150
Ladder rack bars are often much larger than roof rack bars which is the case with the Thule Xsporter Pro ladder rack # TH500XTB or # TH500XT for your 2016 Ford F-150. I do have a kayak carrier option that will work but the Malone carrier # MPG107MD will not fit. Instead you can use the Thule Top Deck # TH881 and to get it to fit the Xsporter bars you will also need adapter # THXADAPT3.

  • How To Carry Two Kayaks On a 2018 Toyota Highlander With Factory Roof Rack
In order to mount two kayaks on the top of a 2018 Toyota Highlander with factory roof rack you will need to position the kayaks on their side using j-style kayak carriers, the Malone J-Loader Kayak Carrie part # MPG118MD for fixed or the Malone DownLoader Kayak Carrier part # MPG114MD for folding are what I recommend. This will be the case for pretty much all factory roof racks as very few if any will be long enough to carry two kayaks side by side.

  • Is Malone Stinger Load Assist Compatible With Swagman Aero Carrier System
I went out to the warehouse to check the mounting hole measurements of the Swagman Exo Aero Rooftop Kayak Carrier System with Tie-Downs part # S65145 compared to the Malone Stinger Load assist part # MPG350 and the Stinger would not properly attach to the bottom of the Swagman Kayak carrier. The Malone Stinger is designed for the Malone SeaWing carrier part # MPG107MD. The full kit is part # MPG113MD which comes with the load assist and tie downs. If you do not already have the Swagman...

  • Can Rack'em Fitz-All Enclosed Trailer Ladder Rack Carry Two Kayaks
The Rack'em Fitz-All Enclosed Trailer Ladder Rack # RA-28 can absolutely be used to carry a pair of kayaks as the rack has bars which are 2-1/6" tall x 1" wide so you can use a saddle-style kayak carrier. The best carrier depends on the weight of your kayaks; if they are heavier kayaks you can use the Malone MegaWing # MPG207 which has a weight capacity of 150 lbs. If you do not need that much capacity then the better option is the Malone SeaWing Kayak Carrier # MPG107MD which has a...

  • Differences between Malone MegaWing and SeaWing Kayak Carriers
The Malone MegaWing, part # MPG207 and the SeaWing, part # MPG107MD are extremely similar and come in Malone's distinctive red styling, but have different applications. Its not the wrong picture, just not a great one to notice the differences. I contacted Malone directly for more information. They are made with the same mold but different plastics. The MegaWing has roughly double the weight capacity of the SeaWing, coming in with 150lbs of capacity and designed for use in larger applications,...

  • Is Malone SeaWing Kayak Carrier Compatible With Rhino Rack Crossbars?
Yes, the Rhino-Rack Vortex Crossbars # RRVA118B-2 will work with your Malone SeaWing # MPG107MD kayak carrier. The Vortex bars are aero, and the SeaWing is compatible with aero, round, square, oval and elliptical crossbars. You may also be interested in upgrading the Vortex's lock cores to the all-metal cores # RRVA-LEC4. I have added a link to a video review of these locking endcaps for you, as well as a review video of the Rhino-Rack bars.

  • Kayak Carrier Similar to Malone V-Style for Aero Bars
The V-Style Kayak Carrier for Malone XtraLight Trailers - 1 Kayak # MPG567 are only a fit for square bars like the Inno # INB127 or the newer Thule SquareBar # TH712200. There is not a similar style kayak carrier to fit aero bars. You may be interested in the MegaWing # MPG207 or the SeaWing # MPG107MD. The Lockrack Watersport Carrier - Kayak, Canoe, or 2 SUPs - Side Loading - Universal Mount # 339LRUNISETA is a more sophisticated version that doesn't need the tie-downs.

  • Recommended Canoe Carrier Compatible with 2014 Heartland Bighorn 5th Wheel Trailer
For your 2014 Heartland Bighorn Model M3010RE, I recommend the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs # 13703. This will bolt or weld onto your frame and give you 3,500 lbs towing capacity and up to 350 lb tongue weight. Due to the height of your trailer, there really isn't a safe way to carry your canoe or kayak other than to add a trailer. For this application, I recommend the adjustable ball mount # MT70380 along with a hitch lock like # 63232. Then use a trailer...

  • Swagman Exo Aero Roof Kayak Carrier Compatibility with Inno Roof Racks
The Swagman Exo Aero Roof Kayak Carrier, part # S65145 will fit square Inno crossbars just fine. If you have Inno Aero-style crossbars, they will be too wide for the bracket clamp. Instead, I recommend the Malone SeaWing, part # MPG107MD, a saddle style carrier with integrated straps and includes all of the tiedowns that you need. This fits bars up to 3-1/2 inches wide, letting the Inno bars fit comfortably inside its brackets. I've included a video of both parts so you can see...
