Best Way To Carry Kayaks On 2020 Ford Ranger With Diamondback Bed Cover

Updated 07/14/2025 | Published 07/10/2025

Question:

I have a diamond back lid on a 2020 ranger. I am looking for a set up that will allow me to haul two 18ft kayaks and provide loading assistance. Kayka are about 50 lbs each. What do you recommend.

Hello James, thanks for reaching out. Yakima actually makes an HD track system designed specifically for the Diamondback truck cover, so that will easily be the best way to add a rack setup that will allow you to carry kayaks in conjunction with your cover. Take a look at the following:

- Yakima 72" HD Tracks for Diamondback Truck Covers # Y92AR

These install directly to the cover. Some Diamondback covers even have factory etch marks that indicate where to position the rails. The rails will let you mount SkyLine towers, OverHaul, or OutPost systems to your Diamondback truck cover. For carrying 18' kayaks a cab height rack like the OverHaul will be ideal. For that use the following:

-Yakima OverHaul HD Adjustable Truck Bed Ladder Rack - Aluminum - 500 lbs - 68" Crossbars # Y01151-58

Then to carry the kayaks you can use a J-style carrier like the Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier # Y04073.

That will be everything you need to carry kayaks along with the Diamondback cover, and look good while doing it lol

Thank you Jesse M. I am wondering what side loading lift assist system might work with the Yakima rack for two kayak - example 2 sets of Hullavator Pro's or another brand set up that provides a similar function.

@James The Thule Hullavator # TH898 will work with the OverHaul HD Ladder rack. That will be our best option for a lift assist.
