Video Transcript for Thule The Stacker Rooftop Kayak Carrier Review - 2013 Kia Soul

Today on our 2013 Kia Soul, we'll be test-fitting the Thule Stacker Roof Mount and Multi-Kayak Carrier, Part number TH830.We'll begin our test-fit by first placing the Stacker onto the front load bar. We'll insert the bolts through the top of the top bracket of the Stacker. We'll then use the bracket to come underneath the front load bar, inserting the bolts through the holes of the bracket. We'll then use the black wing nuts to tighten it down to secure the Stacker to the load bar. Once we have the first stacker all tightened down and secured to the front load bar, we can repeat the same steps for the rear stacker.Once both pieces are secured and tightened down to the load bars, we're ready to load up our kayak. We'll first simply take our Thule straps to thread them through the top of the Stacker.

We'll do this for both the front and rear piece. We'll then drape them over the driver's side. We'll now set our kayak up on top of our load bars, positioning the kayak even on the load bars, so the weight can be evenly distributed to each load bar. Next, we'll drape the straps over the kayak, wrapping them underneath the load bar, inserting the strap through the buckle and tightening it down. When you thread the strap underneath the load bar, you want to make sure that it is on the inside of the feet.

This will prevent the strap from slipping off of the load bar. Before tightening it down all the way, you want to make sure that you do the rear strap as well, and then tightening it down firmly. With these two straps secured, we're ready to install our bow and stern strap. With our hook, pulley, and rope already assembled according to the included instructions, we'll go up to the strap at the head of the carrier, and clip it onto the strap that's connected to the kayak. Next, we'll go underneath the front of the vehicle and find a sturdy spot to hook the second hook. Once we've established this position, we can then gently pull down on the end of the rope to reduce the slack. We'll then move to the rear of the vehicle, where we will again hook the clip around the black strap of the kayak, and find a secure position on the underside of the rear of our vehicle.

This vehicle is equipped with a hitch, which will be a perfect destination for the second hook. We'll then pull down on the rope, reducing the slack. Since the bow of the kayak is secured with the rope, we can then tighten down the stern. We'll then move back up to the front of the vehicle, where we will tighten it snug. With the kayak all loaded up and secured, that will complete today's test-fit on the Thule Stacker Roof Mount and Multi-Kayak Carrier, Part number TH830 on our 2013 Kia Soul.

Do the kayaks sit directly on the Thule cross bars? Do you for see a problem rubbing, since there doesnt appear to be any type of padding between the kayak and the rails?

The kayaks sit on the Rhino Rack bars and against the Thule carrier stems and rubbing is not an issue because they should have direct contact anyway. The straps keep them tight to the carrier stems and rack barsno padding needed. This was the best system for us!

I purchased this for my son and friend, and told me it works great. It is easy to attach, fold down when not in use, and takes up very little space when storing. It made a great gift, as well as making loading and unloading simple and easy. 485360

The picture shows the stacker in the down position. Very easy to install and raise to tie the kayaks to the two upright Stackers. After you remove the kayaks, simple to loosen a knob and lay the stackers flat so that you don't hear any wind noise when you are driving. Or you can just remove them until the next time you go kayaking. This allows us to carry two of our plastic river kayaks. If we buy another set of the Stackers, we can carry a total of 4 river kayaks. 223495

Love this stacker rack! Wanted to get something that can carry 1-6 boats, and it works perfectly! Folds down nicely on the roof to fit in the garage when not in use. Carries up to 4 boats on my Chrysler Town & Country; up to 6 on the bars of my buddy's pop-up camper roof (extra straps are required for more than 2 boats). Durable, as are pretty much all Thule products. Would highly recommend! 251004

Great product. Explanation of what we needed before we bought the product was excellent! Have loaded 4 kayaks easily for a couple trips. Very happy we purchased this instead of a trailer. Easy to take on and off and light to use on both vehicles allowing us to carry on kayak trip so we do not leave kayaks while retrieving other vehicle. 216308

The Stacker worked perfectly! We needed to haul 2 kayaks, and when we began to suspect that my 2014 CR-V cross rails weren't wide enough for the Thule J-Style carriers I kept looking. Well, The Stacker was the perfect solution. Mounted in the center of the rails, to accommodate two Kayaks. Watching the video provided on etrailer page was very helpful, as we have never tried to use anything like this before. These brackets are so very sturdy, and with kayaks attached, were so stable. The straps provided were sturdy too, and easy to use. Being able to use these two brackets, instead of having to buy two sets of J-style hooks was a huge money saver. Thanks to etrailer.com I was able to figure all of this out, using descriptions, reviews, videos and Q&A's available as I was trying to work out a solution. Thank you etrailer. 137486

Looked everywhere to find a kayak rack that would fit on an existing 08 Xterra with a manufacturer storage rack and crossbar support. etrailer site had what I needed. They had a "blog" describing that this would work, with extension bolts (which they also supply). Received the system within 4 days, installed it in about 15 - 20 minutes on the manufacturer rack. Holds up great, first trip we traveled about 250 miles round trip with two kayaks on top (about 80 lbs total), in 20 - 30 mph winds. No problems at all. I am extremely happy with this system. I do use a few rubber cabinet liners cut and placed on the crossbars to help the kayaks from sliding (this is also very helpful). I have read a few reports of the boats coming lose, but have not had any issues. I have enclosed a few pictures to show how they install as well as how boats were secured. 406809

Will this work on a 2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 5 door for two 10 foot wilderness Systems Tarpon 100 sit on top kayaks? The kayaks weigh about 52 lbs a piece and I have the factory cross bars that I purchased at my local Subaru dealer. Thanks
-- comment by: Damon - 08/26/2013

1971

The racks should have no problem attaching to the bars, but, there are some things we should check to ensure this rack will work. 1) Check the crossbar spread, from center of front bar to center of rear bar, on the Subaru. It needs to be 24 inches, minimum. 2) Check the weight capacity of the roof/roof rack. If it is not indicated on the bars, then Subaru will have it listed in the ownersmanual. You have 104 lbs of kayak and about 8 pounds of kayak carrier with this one. Make sure your vehicle will accommodate that weight.

They Work Well, but Depending upon your position of the roof racks you may get wind whistle if you don't have the kayaks up there, otherwise with the kayaks it was great easy to use and mount on my Rhino Rack, wish they had a front wind cover that would mount and prevent wind Whistle. They definitely worked well with 2 kayaks up there, I will be trying with 3 in July. 385478
