Features to know about

Carry One Kayak or Make Room for Two

hull-a-port in action

Most trips may only need one kayak, but adding a second boat should not force you to dedicate more roof space to another carrier. The Hull-A-Port XTR holds your kayak in a J-cradle for single-boat trips, then repositions into a vertical stacker when another paddler comes along. It supports one kayak up to 75 lbs or two kayaks with a combined weight up to 130 lbs, giving your roof setup a practical way to adapt when the number of boats changes.

Keep Your Straps Ready While You Load

strapcatch

Getting a kayak settled on the roof is easier when the straps are already where you need them. StrapCatch holds your straps up and accessible before the kayak goes into the carrier, so they are ready for securing once the boat is positioned. Padded and rubberized contact points support the hull, buckle protectors help keep strap hardware from scratching it, and load straps plus bow and stern tie-downs are included for one kayak. A second kayak requires an additional set of straps (sold separately), but the loading routine stays organized from placement through final securement.

Fold It Down Between Paddling Trips

Leaving a carrier installed is more practical when it does not have to stay upright after every trip. The Hull-A-Port XTR arrives fully assembled, mounts with wraparound straps that keep excess hardware beneath your crossbars to a minimum, and stores its adjustment tool on the carrier for future changes. After unloading your kayak, the upright folds down to reduce the carrier profile, letting your roof setup stay installed and ready for the next trip.

Video Transcript for Review of Thule Watersport Carriers - Kayak Roof Rack J-Style - TH34FR39AB

Hi, everyone. Steven here with etrailer. Let's take a look at the Thule Hull-a-Port XTR Kayak Roof Rack. Now, folks, this is considered a J-style folding carrier, and this is very versatile, so you can carry either one or two kayaks with the dual-position design of this J-style carrier. And it's gonna transform from a J-cradle to a vertical stacker position with ease. Now it uses what's called an Integrated StrapCatch system to help manage those straps while loading, and the upright folds flat when not in use.

Now, what's neat about these, also, is that these come fully assembled out of the box. They're ready to go, they're ready to install, and you simply can loosen up the lever here. And like I said, depending on how you loosen it and tighten it, you can then fold everything nice and flat, or if you need to, you can keep it upright as well. So, again, a great option, multiple different angles to choose from, et cetera, what-not. As far as putting it together, again, right outta the box ready to go.

Of course, you have a spot there if you choose to buy separately. It is compatible with their One Key System and their lock cylinders. Now, this is a universal mount, so it's gonna work up to load bars up to 80.5 millimeters wide. And you do get the included straps, the ropes, and everything, and the buckle protectors and everything. I didn't put all that together outta box 'cause I wanted to show it to you individually as how it comes out of the box.

And as you know, with Thule, they make great, great products, nice, heavy-duty, sturdy. Of course, they got their rubber padding on all the bars here to keep your kayaks protected, and everything. And then once again, it's just super simple to pop this loose, and then to be able to fold it down whenever you're not using 'em for storage, and whatnot. So, again, very easy, very versatile. These are the Thule Hull-a-Ports.

And, again, you can carry one kayak up to 75 pounds, or two with a combined weight of 130 pounds. Overall, they're 20 inches long, nine inches wide, and 20 inches tall when they're in the upright position. And those straps are two inches by 15 feet long. Again, folks, this is only compatible with a bunch of different options, so make sure you're double-checking the compatibility to be sure it's gonna work with your setup. And as always, you can reach out to us if you have any further questions about this, or any other products. I'm Steven, thanks for watching.

  • Can A Yakima BaseLine Roof Rack Carry A Kayak At Highway Speeds?
Hey David, thanks for reaching out. Yes, the Yakima BaseLine roof rack # Y75CB is absolutely strong enough to carry your 11-foot, sub-50 lb Ocean Kayak on your 2020 Toyota Avalon at normal highway speeds. That's exactly the kind of load the system is designed for. As long as the rack is installed correctly, the kayak is secured with quality straps and bow/stern tie-downs, and you stay within the roof load rating for your Avalon, traveling at 70+ mph isn't a problem. A 50 lb kayak is well...
