Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Needed tires and wheels for my recently purchased popup. The resources had a lot of good information. The price was as good, or better than anyone else local or internet, and they were in stock. Ordering was easy and they arrived when promised. I'm new to popups, so will definitely be shopping here again. 866813

Seem to be nice tires for my small camper. I haven't had them on the road yet but I'm planning on testing them in the near future. The last camping trip which was about one month, I had 2 tire blowouts on lower rated tires. So with these new higher rated tires I am feeling much more confident that "tire blowouts" won't be part of my next camping adventure. The tires were delivered quicker than I expected and I enjoyed talking with customer service who were friendly and helpful. Thanks and keep up the excellent work. 715785

I was on vacation and had a tire on the boat trailer just about let go. I noticed the tire was low almost flat when I arrived and was unloading the trailer. I looked and saw that the cords in the tire let go and had protruded out from the tread. My family and I were lucky. I ordered 2 new tires with rims and had them shipped to our cottage . That way I wouldn’t lose valuable family time and get taken to the cleaners by a local shop in the north woods . I ordered Sunday night and received my order on Wednesday . I have ordered many items from e trailer. Cargo hitch hauler with bag, various towing and trailer parts. etrailer is the best place to buy anything for trailers or vehicle cargo accessories. Thank you etrailer. I was in St. Germain WI 678179

I ordered a set of tires and wheels (Part number AM31991) on Sunday , and was informed that my order was packaged and sent out that same day! It actually arrived at my house 1 day earlier than anticipated. The wheels were great quality, and the tires are perfect with alot of tread and a nice firm sidewall (I got the load range D) and handle 2 newer Seadoo's perfectly. I had several emails along the way informing me of my order and shipping status, and who to contact in case of problems. Awesome customer service! 566519

I won't waste your time talking about this Tire and Rim's value, quality, or worth without AT LEAST FIVE YEARS of driving on them, that would be moronic and the current stars of course only refer to etrailer delivery. While that is obviously true, (even my 4th grade daughter asked me how people could be so dumb as to write how good or bad something is after only using it for a year or less), etrailer sent five Tire and Rims on time, with paper packing material, and heavy boxed, undamaged with product in perfect retail condition. In five years I will be back to give the only kind of review worth reading. See you then! 565133

Best money I ever spent on my RV. These tires having a higher load rating, which have made towing much easier. I have less sway. I think it was rocking side to side more then swaying. Trailer manufactures put the lowest possible rated tires on their trailers. My trailer came with load range B. Those tires did not last long and blew out while driving. ( yes inflated to max psi) I replaced them with load range C which helped. But these load range D's are way better then the C's. The trailer handles better then ever. 559843

These are an awesome upgrade to your trailer with 13" tires These went on a Coleman tent trailer. This is the big one with all the stuff making it heavy. The old load range C tires look like it was run on the sidewalls of the tire as the trailer is heavy. The new load range D tires with the extra 15 psi (65) made the difference. Looks normal now. I also ordered the 3,500 axle leaf spring purches TRSS238 I'm going to weld them to the top of the axle to mount the springs above the axle. This gains 4.25" lift. Needed as it drags just going out of the driveway lol 495000

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Can I Use Radial and Bias Tires at the Same Time?
If this is just a temporary spare, you can but not for long. We recommend running the same type tire on both sides for safe towing because the different types will respond differently on the road. We need each tire on your trailer to handle the same so we don't have issues on the road. If you decide to go with both bias tires then you need Item # AM3S331. If you want to go with radials you need Item # AM31991. I have radials on my trailer! Radials have more flex to them. Radials...

  • 175/80-13 Load Range D Bias or Radial Trailer Tire for Highway Use
I've linked our selection of 175/80-13 sized tire and wheel combos for you but it sounds like you've already looked through them. Since your trailer will mainly be on the highway I definitely suggest going with radials like # AM31991. Radial tires run cooler than a bias tire, and a cooler tire will last longer. They also have better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear which will benefit you on highway use. A bias tire is generally only a better option for off road...

The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 13" White Mini Mod Wheel # AM31991 that you referenced actually meets all of the criteria that you mentioned. This combo comes with the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10210 which has a load range D (1,650 lbs at 70 psi) and a max speed rating of 81 mph. • Recommended 13" Tire Replacement for 145R12 Tire
I do have a recommendation for you to replace your 145R12 size tires with a tire that fits on a 13" wheel but you will need to note that you need to have extra room both in your wheel wells as well as between your tire and the frame of your trailer. For your application I recommend the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 13" White Mini Mod Wheel # AM31991. This tire has a load range D (1,610 lbs at 65 psi), a speed rating of 81 mph, and comes with a wheel that has the common 5...

This will give you a section width of 7 inches and an outer diameter of 24.1 inches. This will give you a wider tire by 2.2 inches and a taller tire by 3.6 inches. As long as you have 1.1 inches of clearance more on the inside between your frame and the sidewall of your tire and have clearance...

  • Proper Tire Pressure for Trailer Tires
You should not run your tires at 50 psi if their max rating is 65 psi. Trailer tires such as the Karrier # AM31991 always need to be filled to the max psi for the best performance, while reducing the air pressure is going to lessen the load you are able to carry, making the tire's performance uneven and heightening the risk of a blowout.

  • Need Replacement Trailer Tires for Size R78-13 on a 1989 Palomino Pop-up Camper
The old tire size of 78-13 is going to be either a 175/80-13 or a 185/80-13. Since you mentioned that the tires were different sizes I would assume that you potentially need to also replace the wheels. There are 2 different bolt patterns for the wheels in these sizes; 4 on 4 or 5 on 4-1/2. So if it has 4 lug nuts holds on the wheel then it is a 4 on 4 and 5 lug nuts would indicate a 5 on 4-1/2. I have linked all of the tire and wheel combos in both tire sizes for you. The tires you...

  • Are The Wheel and Tire Combinations Balanced Already?
The tire and wheel combos we carry are not machined balanced. The reason manufacturers do not balance their tires and wheel assemblies like the Karrier Tire and Wheel Combo # AM31991 is because a balanced tire and wheel is not very necessary on a trailer. They do not use drive or steering axles, so they are basically just supporting a vertical load and trailing a tow vehicle and balancing won't do much to improve that or necessarily make the ride more comfortable.

  • Are Trailer Tires Already Balanced on the Wheels on the Tire and Wheel Combinations?
Trailer tires do not have to be balanced due to the fact that you won't be able to feel the imbalance in the vehicle. Every tire and every wheel has a high (heavy) spot and a low (light) spot. When the manufacturers mount the tires on the wheels, they try to offset the tire high spot and the wheel high spot to provide some balance. You can take them to a tire shop and have them balanced if you want them to be balanced, but they do not need to be balanced to be used on your trailer....
