Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.
Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.
In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Rather than lower the muffler & tail pipe by removing the rubber grommets holding them up, I opted to just remove the muffler from the tail pipe (only two bolts) & pull the muffler all the way out (the support grommets require some wrestling) for easy access to the heat shield. I found that using a 1 1/2" spade bit to drill through the aluminium heat shield made for a perfect bolt hole (best to lay the heat shield on a block of scrap wood & bring the bit up to speed before drilling). Since I'm only using the hitch to carry a bicycle rack I did not install wiring for trailer lights.
Overall the hitch meets expectations as a trailer hitch. I'd like to point out a couple of things that are not meant to be specific negatives, but considerations. My 3-stars is directly related to item 2 below. I really don't want to have to go through two install procedures. 1. Installation: 2020 Outback XT The XT has dual exhaust, and there simply was/is not way to get the hitch in to position without removing the mufflers. There is not the room to contort the hitch in to position with the mufflers released from their mounts, but still connected. THE GOOD - the mufflers are very straight forward to remove - two fasteners each and with the car being new, everything came apart easily and back together without having to replace any washers/seals. Add 45 min to your install time, take your time and all is good. 2. Use of Yakima 4-bike HoldUp Evo. The rack is angled down at the back. It is very noticeable on the 4th bike being titled toward the ground. This is not an issue on my '15 outback with Curti hitch (from e-trailer) - so it is not the rack (I tried it side-by-side to double check). The instructions say to add a washer between the rack and the car frame to only the ear mounting bolts which causes a slight down angle on the hitch receiver verified by putting a level on the receiver - in hindsight. I may end up going back through the whole process to remove those washers in an effort to even out the rack. I would suggest installation without the washers! 3. Shipping - UPS can't seem to deliver something of this composition without rough handling (same issue when I took delivery of the Curti for my 15 Outback). The hitch punched through the box in two locations. No damage done, but be aware and try to be present when they deliver to reject the shipment if they damaged the hitch during transit.
Rec'd my Hitch (DT73RR) and Wiring Harness (C56040) in just a few short days after ordering. Kimberly in customer service was great! She answered all my questions about my 2020 Subaru Outback and even placed my order while I was still on the phone. I installed both in less than 2 hours. The hitch looks great and was easy to install with no drilling! This is the 2nd hitch and harness I've purchased from etrailer and couldn't be happier with my purchase. Great products and excellent customer service!
Follow up after installation: 2020 Outback XT touring The information I received with the hitch states "40 minute installation." I consider myself to possess a high mechanical knowledge. From unpacking the hitch and being parked 10' from my tool box it took 150 minutes. This is inclusive of returning all tools to its proper place and clean up! The instructions minimally adequate but missed the point of advising there are 4 muffler hangers ( front and rear location of each muffler. After a fifteen minute attempt, I determined the proper method of snaking the bolt wires--- reverse fishing through their permanent location hole (with the coiled end first) to the instructions defined entrance hole, attach the spacer and bolt and pull the wire back through to its permanent location. No issues with the hitch as it looked great and I am confident it will serve its purpose.
This took me almost 2 hours to install, but much of that was due to fighting around the muffler to get the heat shield off and on, and some time for figuring out how to lift the receiver up on my own. But, I got it done (almost wonder if it would have been easier to take the muffler off) and it looks good.
Nice product for sure. Had a good experience before on my 2015 outback but this product is an improvement for sure. Fit like a glove and no drilling! Nice. Buying from e-trailer is just a good deal and saved some bucks also.
I have purchased a couple hitches from etrailer and they always make it easy. The video that etrailer made was easy to follow and covered everything on the install. I did not post videos or photos because mine looked the same as what was already posted. A small side note, I have the Outback Onyx XT with dual mufflers. I had less than 500 miles on my car so it was very easy to unbolt the mufflers and move them out of the way. I purchased a muffler hanger tool and along with soapy water they slipped right off. I did the complete install without a hoist or jacking the car up and putting it on jack stands.
Arrived in two day even though it left Earth, box was in ok shape but battered. The directions were to small to read, but the video told me enough. I drilled the hole needed with a spade bit trimming with a utility knife on the heat shield, I also had removed the muffler as the car was 7 days off the lot, and a 2021 model. I rested hitch on a cinder block while putting bolts on left side. Then got the right side in place. Used nut driver to run up, then torqued to the spec. Took me one hour and a half, I am legally blind so not a hard job for a person with good sight.
Your comments section is of so much value! This installation is not for the faint of heart- I'm pretty good at turning a wrench- was able to knock it out (including putting in the wiring needed harnesses) in about 3.5 hours. One of the contributors to the comments section mentioned that if you have the 2.4L v-4 turbo (dual exhaust) in the end its easier to just remove both mufflers- I agree whole-heartedly! I used lines/rope to be able to hold the weight of the hitch while I bolted into place- (didn't have any help). Also backed the rear tires onto a couple 2x6's I had lying around to give me a little more under clearance... Placed a tarp down beforehand...
Great product: excellent instructions were easy to follow! Thank you etrailer! Item arrived undamaged - nice packaging. only change to install method was that I used 1.5 inch hole saw instead of 1-3/8”. By myself and without exhaust hanger pliers it took two hours. Those exhaust hanger pliers would have likely saved 15-20 minutes. Mounted a bike rack and hit the trail later in the day!
Not a 50 min. install for most of us. If you have the XT (dual exhaust), it is VERY difficult to replace the exhaust hangers on the passenger side. Two key tips to add to your instructions: 1) use dish soap to help slide rubber exhaust mounts back on 2) you may need to loosen the bolts holding the mufflers to the exhaust pipe so that you can attach all rubber exhaust hangers. Otherwise, the hitch fits really well and I like how hidden it is.
Straight forward installation. However, the stated 40 minute installation time by a professional installer does not apply to a shade tree mechanic working by himself. A more realistic time is 2 hours. I found that removing the muffler on my 2020 Outback was a better option than lowering it as stated int the instructions. The installed hitch is tucked very nicely under the vehicle and isn't an eyesore. The only issue I had with this product was the way it was packaged for shipment. The lower edges of the brackets that hold the tubular crosspiece had protruded through the cardboard shipping box and the paint had been rubbed off. I would recommend a protective shipping covering on the edges of these brackets to prevent this problem.
Excellent hitch, well designed and worked perfectly on my 2021 Outback. The installation video helped a lot, and my car is new so everything was clean and easy to work on. The hardware fit perfectly. It did take me about 3 hours to get in installed, but I was taking my time to get it right.
If you follow the instructions the install will be a breeze. I recommend having another set of hands to help lift the receiver into position. Use tape to secure the bolts so you don't push them up into the frame. Install time for me was about 1 hour which includes the time to remove and augment the heat shield and disconnect the exhaust hangers. Soapy water in a spray bottle is your friend for this........
Easy install, great directions. Performs as expected. Note for self-installers: 1) use dry lube spray to help get the muffler hangers off and on, 2) hole saw/cutter works easier than tin snips, and 3) try to do this BEFORE you get than new undercoating applied :)
The product looks great, as advertised. Install should be a pretty straight forward. I have purchased a few items for etrailer.com and they are always the best (price and customer service.) When shipped, the boxed it came in was broken open and the hitch had some signs of paint chips and wear. I am not too overly concerned but it is disappointing to see the paint chips. I do understand that shipping heavy opens can be though though.
Hitch went on just as I expected. I installed a curt hitch on 2017 outback and this one was definitely easier to install. Not that any of them are easy, but this one was easier for sure. Took me 45 minutes start to finish with everything put away at the end. It was also way more hidden than the curt hitch on the 2017 outback.
Super fast delivery! Got my order hassle free. Alex called and helped me get the right hitch and accessories. The instructions were right on and the hitch went on just as described. Highly recommend these guys!
Excellent product, phenomenal service, almost instant delivery. This is my second hitch due to new car. Extremely cost effective compared to factory installed hitch. Used previous hitch 10 years as it was adaptable to successive same brand vehicles. Primary use is for 2 bicycles which were hauled all over the country side.
Very fast shipping and installation was easier than advertised. One person can easily install this hitch.
Easy to install, just a little trim of the heat sheld. Easy instructions to read.
Installation was relatively easy. I did end up having to remove one of my mufflers to wiggle the hitch into place as I have an XT. I think it would have been an easier go with the base model which has only one exhaust.
Easy installation. 2020 Subaru Outback. Took me about 1 hour 15 min. I just left the car on the ground did not jack it up. Easy straight forward instructions.
This is my second purchase from etrailer. Good product at a good price and fast shipping. Installed it myself in an hour. Thank you
Great product. This is the third etrailer hitch I've purchased and self installed. The instructions are clear and easy to understand. All the parts needed for installation are included.
