Today were going to review part number 20005. This is the Tekonsha Shur Set III lockable trailer breakaway kit. This breakaway kit features a rechargeable sealed maintenance-free battery for trouble-free towing. The breakaway kit is designed to bring a trailer safely to a stop by activating the trailer breaks should a trailer disconnect from the tow vehicle during transit. Ideally, the safety chains will prevent a trailer from disconnecting if the coupler comes off the ball, however, if the safety chains fail, the breakaway kit acts as a last line of defense against a runaway trailer, and this type of safety system is required in most states for trailers weighing more than 3,000 pounds. We do recommend to check your local state regulations for what the rules and laws are in your state.
The breakaway switch right here is mounted to the trailer frame, has a cable right here that connects to the vehicles frame, and if the trailer disconnects this cable pulls the pin out of this switch and then this switch will activate, being hooked up to the battery here, it will activate the trailer brakes to keep the trailer from running away. Now, this is a very compact design. It includes the nylon breakaway switch. Now a battery charger is not included with this part number, but we do sell one separately. It would be the part number 1024.
Thats the Tekonsha battery charger for this trailer breakaway system. Now this breakaway kit has a wide operating temperature. It ranges from a -76 degrees to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. This does meet or exceed the DOT regulations, has a durable battery housing which is lockable right here you can see on the top the cover has a tab with a hole in it that would line up. Right in here is the rechargeable sealed maintenance-free 12 volt battery as you can see right here, positive posts and negative posts.
That would just drop into place and then you would just close the lid and put a padlock through here. We do sell padlocks separately. As you can see these mounting tabs right here, this is a side mount screw-on box. Now when you do install this, you would mount this battery case securely to the frame or any other suitable location on the trailer that will allow this switch to be towards the tow vehicle. Now the switch location should be selected to insure an unobstructed line of pull in the event of a vehicle separation.
Now you do bolt this breakaway switch bracket to the frame of the trailer and what you want to do is, theres the hole right here in the bracket. When you tighten that bolt down you dont want to over tighten it because the switch you do want it to be able to pivot just in case it gets in a different direction it will still have a direct pull to pull that pin out of the switch. Basically what you would want to do is the back of this breakaway switch has two black wires coming out of it doesnt matter which ones used for which. What you would do is one of these would go using the included connectors as you can see right here. Youd put a connector on one of these and one of the wires would go to the positive post of this battery. The negative post you would ground to the trailer frame. Now this other black wire you would use and splice this into the brake output on the electrical connector on your trailer. You would just splice one of these wires into the brake output so it activates your trailer brakes. And that should about do it for the review on part number 20005, the Tekonsha Shur Set III lockable trailer breakaway kit.

Have not installed it yet so I can't review the product. I can tell you that etrailer's customer service is top notch. I called about a shipping delay after I placed my order. They assured me it would only be a day and not a week like my order confirmation said. Called back the next day and my order was already shipped. Good people to do business with.
