CURT Trailer Breakaway Kit - C52026

The battery case in this breakaway kit can clamp around your trailer frame or jack post. Kit brings your single-, double-, or triple-axle trailer to a stop should it become disconnected.

Note: A breakaway system is required by law in most states for trailers that are equipped with electric brakes and have a GTW of at least 3,000 lbs.

Quick Tips:

When you store your trailer, be sure to keep the pin plugged into the breakaway switch. If the pin's removed for an extended period of time, dirt and moisture can get into the switch and cause corrosion that could keep it from activating when you need it.
A breakaway system needs to be able to apply the trailer brakes fully for at least 15 minutes. In general, the heavier your trailer, the higher amperage battery you'll need for the breakaway.

I wanted to reach out to you in regards to your review on the Curt breakaway battery. You mentioned that you have not used the kit. I wanted to ask if there was something about the kit that has made you not want to use it or if you just have not had the need to install it yet?

It turns out that pulling CDL rated fifth wheels requires I use a full size battery for the braking system. I never really needed it in the first place. Those are rated to stop only smaller bumper pull type.

Does the Brake Output Wire Get Attached to a 12 Volt Trailer Battery
In order to rewire your trailer, I strongly recommend you use the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit part # HS381-9000 with the Bonded 4 Wire part # 16-4B-1. This is going to ensure you have all the correct wire gauge and the junction box makes for a clean install as well as an easy way to troubleshoot if you ever have issues. In regards to the brake output wire part # 10-1-1, this will receive power from the tow vehicle's brake controller via the 7-way, not a battery during normal braking....

Does a Breakaway System Need To Have Its Own Battery
The breakaway system actually must be attached to its own separate battery by law in most states. Therefore, I cannot recommend that you use a seperate, auxiliary battery on the trailer or the vehicle for that matter for the breakaway switch. The most cost effective breakaway system we have for you is the Curt Soft Trac II Trailer Breakaway Kit part # C52026. I have attached a photo for you to show how it will need to be wired.

Breakaway batteries are typically just wired to the 12v power wire in the trailer's junction box so that the battery can charge while connected to the tow vehicle. Adding Trailer Brakes to a 3.5K Dexter EZ Lube Axle and Brake Control/7-Way on 2016 Subaru Outback
The brakes you have chosen, # 23-468-469, are compatible with the hub and drum assembly # 84556UC3-EZ and those assemblies will fit the Dexter 3.5K EZ Lube axle. The thing about this hub and drum is the bolt pattern. It has a 5 on 5 bolt pattern which is not very common anymore.
