  • Bright Way
  • 5 Ah

Unit flashes the lights on your single- or tandem-axle trailer while also activating its brakes if it disconnects from your vehicle. This way, not only will your trailer stop, but the flashing lights will also alert others on the road to the danger.

Features:

  • Makes sure your trailer safely stops if it ever separates from your vehicle
    • When the pin gets pulled from the switch, a signal is shot back to your trailer brakes to activate
  • Boosts safety by also flashing your trailer's signal lights if disconnect occurs
    • ICU system activates when breakaway cable detaches
  • Automatically charges battery with built-in charger when connected to your vehicle
    • Won't overcharge the battery
  • Lets you test battery status with the push of a button
  • Mounts on the outside of your trailer's frame
    • Side-loading case provides easy access to battery
    • Self-tapping screws are sold separately
  • Breakaway switch installs on your trailer's frame with self-tapping screws
  • Protects the battery from rain and debris with durable, plastic case
    • Rubber O-ring around lid helps keep water out of the box
    • Wiring diagram is printed on the battery box lid
  • Keeps wires neat with included wire loom
  • Includes breakaway switch, charger, battery, battery box, wiring, and wire loom

Specs:

  • Application: single-axle or tandem-axle trailers with electric brakes
  • Breakaway cable length: 48"
  • Charger amperage: 0.5 amps
  • Battery:
    • Voltage: 12V
    • Type: sealed lead acid
    • Capacity: 5 amp-hours
  • Battery box dimensions: 3-3/4" long x 6" wide x 5" tall
  • 1-Year limited warranty

Note: A breakaway system is required by law in most states for trailers that are equipped with electric brakes and have a GTW of at least 3,000 lbs.

Built-In Battery Charger and Tester

The integrated charger keeps the included battery charged and ready to go. At any time, if you would like to see what the state of the rechargeable battery is, just push the green button and LEDs will light up to indicate the battery's status. If it's green, it means the battery is fully charged. Yellow shows it's currently charging, and red indicates a low battery.

Quick Tips:

  • When you store your trailer, be sure to keep the pin plugged into the breakaway switch. If the pin's removed for an extended period of time, dirt and moisture can get into the switch and cause corrosion that could keep it from activating when you need it.
  • A breakaway system needs to be able to apply the trailer brakes fully for at least 15 minutes. In general, the heavier your trailer, the higher amperage battery you'll need for the breakaway.

I am sorry to hear that they unit is not working as it should. In order to fix this issue, I need to know exactly how it is not working properly so I can reach out to the manufacturer to find out if it is a defect. Can you please reply with the issue? I would like to get this resolved for you =)

This unit is more complex than what I wanted if you forget to reset it will drain the battery especially during the day when you don’t always see the lights flashing. An audible alarm would help

This unit works great! Once I reviewed the wiring diagram carefully and recognized that wire colors did not control how to hook things up, and that you had to make sure of the wire functions on the plug side, hookup was a snap. However, this kit has the ICU unit which is supposed to cause trailer lights to flash in event of disconnect, but the wiring diagram does not have any diagram for the extra wire which controls the ICU. In addition, no wiring diagram on the etrailer site shows what to do with that wire. I hooked it up to the marker lights of the trailer, but when I test the unit, no lights flash. I suggest etrailer add instructions for this connection on its site.

  • What Parts do I Need to Change Over to Electric Brakes on My Jayco 1406 Pop- Up Camper?
Hello Rick, You're looking to swap out the surge brakes for a more reliable electric brake setup, great move for improved control and ease of use. I don’t have access to a specific parts database tied to every trailer model, but based on my research, most Jayco 1406 campers are built on a single 3,500 lb axle (if this is not your axle capacity please let me know). With that in mind, here’s a full setup I recommend: - (1) set of etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes - Self-Adjusting - 10"...

  • Can I Add Breaks To Tractor Supply Trailer With 4.20 x 8 Tires And 2,000 Lb Axle?
Hello Russell, thanks for reaching out. Does your axle have a brake flange? If so, it is possible to add brakes to add brakes, but the problem you would run into is the brake drums for a 2,000 lb axle would not be compatible with 8" wheels. You would need to upgrade to at least a 10" wheel for them to be compatible. Upgrading the wheels might be possible, but the main thing to consider there is your fender clearance. Ideally you want at least 3" between the tire and the fender, and at...

  • Does Brightway ICU Trailer Breakaway Kit Come With Diodes
Hey Wayne! The Brightway ICU Trailer Breakaway Kit # BW94FR does not come with diodes or have any built in to prevent backfeeding. Depending on how you wire it it's certainly possible the lights could pull power from this battery if left on. All you have to do is add in a simple diode like the # RM-690 to stop it. If you have any other questions feel free to let me know in the comments below.

  • Why Does The Alarm On My Bright Way BW94FR Go Off Every Time I Park And Turn Truck Off
The alarm on the Bright Way # BW94FR is designed to go off whenever the trailer is disconnected. So as soon as it no longer senses power from the 7 way plug on your truck, it will activate the alarm. It sounds like the 7 way plug on your truck only has a hot 12v with the key in, and does not have 12v with the truck turned off. In which case, this will happen every time you remove the key. This is a feature of the Incident Crisis Unit signals on your breakaway box. You will have to press...

  • Wiring Diagrams for Installing Bright Way Trailer Breakaway ICU Kit # BW94FR
The lid of the Bright Way Trailer Breakaway ICU Kit with 12V, 5-Amp-Hour Battery, Charger, and Wire Loom # BW94FR that you referenced has a wiring diagram shown that details how it wires. Not seen is there is a single wire that runs up to running light circuit for the alarm. This a standard style of breakaway kit that would install like any other similar option. I also attached a second picture that shows a more detailed wiring diagram plus a review video for the kit and a link to a help...

  • Wiring The Brakeaway Switch On The Bright Way Brakeaway Kit BW94FR
The Black wire coming from the breakaway switch would run to your junction box and connect to your brake wire terminal (this should be blue or black). The blue wire coming from the switch would go to the blue wire on the battery box. As far as connecting the wire you can use crimp connectors or better yet heat shrink connectors like #DW05745-5. We can provide these of course, or you should be able to find them at any hardware or electrical supply store. I have included a picture of a...

  • Can a Diode Be Installed on Trailer Brake Controller Output Wire to Prevent Back Feed?
I would not recommend installing a Diode # RM-690 on the brake line as this is a part which can fail and if it were to you could risk doing a lot of damage. While the Bright Way Push-to-Test ICU Trailer Breakaway Kit # BW94FR could risk damage to your brake controller the breakaway cord should only ever be pulled when the trailer becomes disconnected from your tow vehicle or during testing which you should not be connected during either. If you are connected electronically to the trailer...

  • Should Bright Way Push-to-Test ICU Trailer Breakaway Kit be Charged Initially
It would be a good idea to charge the Brightway kit part # BW94FR once you get it and then periodically when it is stored. To do that you would want to connect the black wire of the kit to the positive clamp and the white to the ground.

  • Can You Disconnect Alarm on Bright Way BW94FR
Hey Mark, There is not a way to manually disconnect the alarm function from the # BW94FR breakaway, as it is a feature of the unit. So the alarm can't be disconnected, and if you have it on the inside of your enclosed trailer, I think I would just switch to one without that alarm, the Bright Way # 3802346.

  • Replacement Breakaway Switch For A Brightway Group Trailer Breakaway Battery
To replace the breakaway switch for your Brightway Group Breakaway Battery you'll just need the Replacement Breakaway Switch for Bright Way Trailer Breakaway Kits # 3802348. This is going to come with 4' of wire that you can run out to the battery and junction box, but you could honestly just cut most of it off and splice it right in where your wiring is now to save time and labor. You'll want to use some heat shrink butt connectors # DW05744-5 to protect your connections though.

  • Will Charger For Bright Way Break Away Battery BW94FR Overcharge Battery On Long Trips?
No, the battery charger included with the Bright Way Breakaway Battery # BW94FR will not overcharge the battery no matter how far you drive. It is designed to allow the battery to fully charge, and then keep it there without damaging the battery.

  • Can Pigtail Wiring be Added to Bright Way Charger BW94FR for Charging When Parked
It wouldn't be a problem to run a pigtail off of the positive and negative wires of the Bright Way battery charger # BW94FR so that you can charge it when easily when not being towed. That wouldn't affect anything at all. A replacement box is not available at this time.

  • Does Blue Wire of Bright Way Push-to-Test ICU Trailer Breakaway Kit go to Battery Inside Box
Yes, the blue wire of the Bright Way Push-to-Test ICU Trailer Breakaway Kit with 0.5-Amp Charger and 5 Ah Battery # BW94FR does run to the positive post of the battery inside the box. It draws power from the battery to activate the trailer brakes in event the breakaway switch was pulled.

  • Does Bright Way Push-to-Test Breakaway Kit Work on Boat Trailer
Yes, the Bright Way Push-to-Test ICU Trailer Breakaway Kit with 0.5-Amp Charger and 5 Ah Battery - Side Load # BW94FR can be used on a boat trailer. I do recommend ensuring you put it at the front of the trailer and not submerging it, however, just as with any electrical component.

  • Can Case/Charger be Replaced on Bright Way Push-to-Test ICU Trailer Breakaway Kit
There are replacement parts for the Bright Way Push-to-Test ICU Trailer Breakaway Kit with 0.5-Amp Charger and 5 Ah Battery part # BW94FR but the case/charger is not one of them. Therefore, if you want to upgrade you'd be looking at an entire new system but as the case and charger are the bulk of the kit, you aren't wasting much money. Furthermore, not all breakaway batteries fit in this case so you need to be sure you're using the one that comes with.
