Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

Self-Adjusting Brakes Don't Require Routine Maintenance

With standard electric brake assemblies, you need to manually adjust them every now and then to make sure you're getting the shortest stopping distance every time you tow.

A trailer drum brake with a red callout shows the location of a tension cable and pulley on a self-adjusting trailer brake.

With self-adjusting brakes, though, you'll always have peak stopping power - simple as that! As the brake pads wear over time, a tensioning cable will automatically keep the pads in alignment so they'll consistently make contact with your drum when you brake. You won't have to do tedious manual adjustments anymore.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

Dexter invests a lot of resources to ensure that these brakes meet the requirements for certification set by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Basically, a CSA certification tells you that these trailer brakes are well built and safe for use on the road.

How to Break In New Brakes

Once you get these brakes installed, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

After doing my homework on what I needed for my Grand Design 230 RL finding the original equiptment replacement parts was essential. After much time on the internet E Trailer had what I needed. I was taken back by the pricing after my search showed some less expensive replacements of the not OE quality. Upon receipt of my purchase I see why the price. Very high quality. Happy me.

by:

Easy to install and have been good reliable brakes for several trips so far. Although, extremely expensive. At over 3 times the cost of the next size down, seemed excessive, but if that’s the size you need you have no choice.

by:

Great service. Got everything fast and complete. Great product and service.

by:

It took awhile to get the correct part numbers, but when done, the product installed nicely! Highly recommended.

  • How to Determine Correct Capacity When Choosing Electric Brake Assemblies
As you mentioned in your question, the 3,500 pound and 4,400 pound electric brake assemblies we have available both feature the same 10 inch x 2-1/4 inch measurement. When determining which rating is correct for your trailer, you will need to locate the capacity of your axle(s). This information should be printed on a tag/sticker somewhere on the axle itself, or listed somewhere on the trailer frame. It is more likely that you have a 3,500 pound axle, as this is simply a much more common...

  • Recommended Self-Adjusting Electric Trailer Brakes For 7000lb Axle
I would be happy to recommend the correct self adjusting electric trailer brakes for your 7000lb axle, but I recommend double checking that your drum is 10" x 2-1/4" since 7000lb axles typically have 12" brakes. I included a diagram of how to measure the diameter and depth of your drums. If you do have 10" brakes then the best option we have is the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 4.4K # K23-478-479 which mount to a 4 bolt brake mounting...

Based on the information we have in our system you will need either the Lippert # LC66WD or Dexter # K23-478-479 brake kits for each of your axles depending on who manufactured your axle. These are 10" diameter by 2-1/4" wide brake assemblies. If you can provide me with the axle tag information on your 2018 Coachmen Freedom Express Blast 271BL toy hauler I can verify this information with the axle manufacturer to ensure Coachmen did not use an axle with different components.

  • Which Replacement Hub/Drums for 4.4K Dexter Torsion Axle
The 4.4K axle uses a fairly unique bearing set, so you'll want to check the reference numbers on your inner and outer wheel bearings to ensure the replacement hub uses the same wheel bearings. If your current hubs use a LM67048 inner and a L44649 outer bearing (which they should), then the correct replacement hub drum is part # 8-407-5UC3-EZ. • What Brake Assemblies for 4400 Lb Axles
A 12 inch 5200 lb rated brake assembly isn't compatible with the 10 inch hub used by a 4400 lb axle, but we do indeed offer 4400 lb brake assemblies, as part # K23-462-463-00 for standard brakes or for self adjusting brakes (which I'd recommend), use part # K23-478-479. Either set of brake assemblies would be compatible with the brake drums used on your 4400 lb axles. Either set of brake assemblies mentioned above include the adjuster hole covers and mounting hardware.
