I have a travel trailer with a Dexter D40 axle, trying to figure out what size Dexter never adjust brakes to buy

The standard Dexter D40 axle is a 4,000 lb axle. The correct replacement brakes for your setup are the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brakes # K23-478-479. If you have a worn hub and drum assembly the correct replacement would be the # K08-426-91.
