    • Requires tongue-mounted activating lever and cables (not included)
  • Easier to install and gives you more control than hydraulic brakes
    • Requires only an electric brake controller (sold separately) - no actuator or hydraulic lines needed
  • Periodic manual adjustment required
    • Can be done in minutes
  • Long-lasting brake pads offer excellent braking torque
    • Fully bonded to shoes for more consistent braking compared to riveted pads
  • Adjuster plugs (included) protect internal components from dirt, grime, and road debris

    • Includes mounting nuts and bolts
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • Application: most standard hub-and-drum assemblies, including etrailer, Dexter, and Lippert (LCI)
  • Dimensions: 10" diameter x 2-1/4" wide
  • Mounting flange bolt pattern: 4 bolt
  • Wheel size: 14", 14-1/2", and 15"

  • Limited 5-year warranty

Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

Ready to Roll When You Are

If you're looking to customize your off-road trailer or pop-up camper, these brakes can be a great way to do that.

a greyscale diagram shows how a manual parking brake cable is installed on the back of an electric parking brake assembly

Installing these brakes is easy, and using them is even easier. Run the linkage cable from your tongue-mounted handbrake (not included) to the backing plate of the assembly as shown above. Then, just pull on the handbrake any time you need a little reassurance that your valuable cargo won't roll away from you.

How to Manually Adjust Trailer Brakes

The more miles you put on your trailer, the more your brake pads will wear down. As they lose contact with the drum, stopping distances get longer and longer. To keep your brakes working great, it's important to adjust them pretty routinely. For this job, grab a floor jack and either a brake adjustment tool (sold separately) or just a standard flathead screwdriver.

Jack up your trailer enough to get the wheel(s) off the ground. Remove the adjuster plugs from the backing plate on the brake, and insert the flat end of the tool through the back of the assembly.

Screenshot from an instruction video shows how to manually adjust the the alignment on a drum brake

Push in on the star gear and lift it up. Keep doing this until the brake pads catch on your drum. When you can't spin your wheel by hand anymore, back the gear off by about 10 clicks by pushing down on the star gear. Does the wheel now spin freely (even if it sounds like the brake pads drag slightly on the drum)? Great! Then you're all done with that one and ready to adjust the rest.

How to Break In New Brakes

After you get these brakes installed and adjusted, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

Purchased Dexter 3,500 lb backing plate assembly with brakes including manual brake. Parts were genuine Dexter. Installation has helped in the restoration of a Sloan Kwik Load car trailer I recently acquired.

Appreciate the etrailer employee followup, service, and pricing. Thanks so much.

It work great. Easy to fit and working 100

by:

etrailer's service and delivery was excellent! Very professional, fast and the staff were super helpful and knowledgeable.

Dexter's brake hubs, however, leave a lot to be desired. They couldn't put less paint on these assemblies if they tried! The paint is so patchy and thin that I will have to disassemble them, paint the components properly and reassemble before installing them on my trailer otherwise they will be rusty within days. Come on Dexter, if you are going to bother painting these assemblies then for goodness sake paint them properly!

by:

At Ruger Trailers we have been getting more requests for Dexter electric brakes with the parking brake feature. After attempting to order through our normal distributors we were disappointed at the lack of availability and high prices. Went through etrailer and got exactly what we needed in two days at a very good price. Good experience!

by:

  • Replacement Brake Assemblies for a 2015 Forest River R-Pod 179 Travel Trailer
Yes, they do. The ones you were looking at, item # 23-468-469, are Dexter's Nev-R-Adjust brakes. This set of left and right hand assemblies are the top of the line option for your 2015 R-Pod 179 trailer. Once you install them and they get broken in you will never have to mess with them again. If you are wanting the most affordable option, then I would go with the etrailer Electric Trailer Brake Kit item # AKEBRK-35. This is still a great set of brakes they just won't have the self adjusting...

Thanks for the information! Based on the numbers stamped on your AL-KO brakes you have 10" x 2-1/2" braking assemblies, but that is not a size carried any longer. The closest option would be the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit w/ Parking Brakes # K23-086-087-00 which measure 10" x 2-1/4" and have the parking brake assemblies you like you need. You will however need to confirm that the brake mounting flange on your axle has a bolt pattern that measures 2-7/8" apart, and 4" apart diagonally...

  • How To Add Trailer Brakes To 2500lb Utility Trailer Being Triple Towed
Unfortunately there is not a good way to hook up electric trailer brakes to your triple towed utility trailer, and the best option would be going with surge brakes on it that do not require any sort of electric. With that said most states do not allow a triple towed trailer to be very heavy, so I recommend checking that the weight of your triple towed trailer is legal in your area before adding the trailer brakes to the trailer. In addition you will need to make sure the hitch you have...
