Gain Power Adjustment

Tekonsha Primus IQ Gain

You can adjust the gain (also known as output) with the thumbwheel on the front of the controller. Gain lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. A heavier trailer will need more power to achieve smooth, safe braking, while a lighter trailer will need less. Typically, the gain is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if the weight of your trailer changes.


Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing

The boost setting controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the maximum braking level. You can adjust this when you're towing heavy loads and you need more umph to bring your trailer to a stop. Your tow vehicle doesn't need that much power to brake in time, but your heavy trailer does.


Depending on the level of boost, your trailer brakes can start at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the set gain. What this means is that, instead of starting at 0, the brakes will start at 25 percent and get to 100 percent sooner. This keeps the trailer from pushing your tow vehicle forward.


If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But, if you want your trailer to lead the braking, you can select level B1.


Boost Levels:

Approximate Gross Trailer Weight Boost Level Increase in Initial Power Output
Less than tow vehicle GVW B1 13%
Equal to tow vehicle GVW B1 or B2 13% or 25%
Up to 25% more than tow vehicle GVW B2 or B3* 25%
Up to 40% more than tow vehicle GVW B3* 25%

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.


To adjust the boost, use the blue push-button on the top of the Primus IQ.


Slide-Bar Manual Override

Tekonsha Primus IQ Manual Override

The Tekonsha Primus IQ comes with an easy-to-reach, slide-bar manual override, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. To engage the manual override, just push the slide-bar to the left, towards the center of the controller. This will activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.


Quick, Simple Installation

The Primus IQ can mount between -90 degrees and 90 degrees vertically, but the brake controller still needs to be horizontally level and parallel with the direction of travel.


After mounting the Primus IQ unit in your cab using the included bracket, simply plug the included custom harness into your vehicle. The other end of the harness plugs into the brake controller. To remove the IQ for storage when you're not using it, just unplug the unit and slide it out of the bracket. With a replacement wiring harness (sold separately) and replacement bracket (6927 - sold separately), you can even transfer the IQ to another vehicle.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Tekonsha Primus IQ brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.


The Primus IQ uses an internal inertia sensor to detect how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Today we have a 2021 Ford Bronco in the shop and we're gonna enable it to do a little bit more. We're gonna be adding the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller. The Primus IQ is kind of the bare bones when it comes to trailer brake controller. Doesn't have a fancy screen, but it does have a screen. So, this isn't the lowest tier you can get. I really don't need a lot of bells and whistles.

I just need my trailer to stop. So, we're gonna have the manual override right here. 11's gonna be our max. We have a little dial on the side. Crank that back a little bit.

So that's gonna be the little adjustments that you're gonna want to do when you have a new trailer on. Whenever it's a little bit lighter of a trailer we're maybe gonna want to, maybe do something a little bit lighter. But then if we do have the bigger stuff, you're gonna want to crank this guy up. But again, it's gonna be on a trailer to trailer basis. And the other button right above the screen right here is gonna be your boost.

So, with a very light trailer you're not gonna need to use it. You can keep it on B, but then B1 is gonna be when it gets a little bit heavier, B2 same thing. And then, B3 is gonna be the max setting. So depending on your trailer, just kind of get it all dialed in so it handles properly whenever you're driving down the road. Why do we want a break control Well, I like the brakes on my Bronco, but I don't wanna have to change 'em out a lot.

So when we have a lot of weight in the back we want that trailer to do a lot of the breaking for us. And this is a proportional breaking system. Meaning, if I stop on the brakes, it's gonna stop on the brakes back there. And if I just lightly tap it, it's gonna lightly apply the brakes to the trailer. So this is just going to expand the life of your pads and rotors on your Bronco. There are two different ways we can hook this up. It all depends on what comes with your Bronco. If you have the factory tow package, all you're gonna need, which is all included with this kit, is the brake controller. but also a cable that's gonna convert our factory harness to our brake controller harness. And that's all included with this kit. If you don't have a tow package on your Bronco, we do have a wiring kit for you that you're gonna need to grab separately so you can install all this. First, we wanna find our wirings. So, you just go underneath the steering wheel, closer to the center console, and you just reach up there and it's gonna be stuck to a little bracket. So once you get it down, this is what you're pulling off. And then at first I was like, okay, this doesn't work. This doesn't work. Well, this is a dummy plug. You just push this in and pull that out. Here's the harness that you need for your factory tow package. We can line it up, click it in. On the dummy plug, what you can do is you can kind of pry this back a little bit, slide this out, and then you can put this on the the wiring that we just plugged in. 'cause that'll give it a nice little spot to put it in there to keep the wires out of the way. They do include a bracket with some mounting hardware. We're gonna have some self tappers, and then some screws to go into the brake controller. I kind of just want it to be on the right side, kind of below my engine start stop. So it's not gonna hit my knee, but it's also accessible, and within arms reach. So take yourself tappers, find the best spot. Make sure there's nothing behind there. That's important. Then we can go ahead and mount this up. Since we are hard mounting this, what you wanna do, there's two different holes. You're gonna have to pre put these little screws in there. I just took a little tiny drill bit, went through it a little bit, ran this all the way in, and then ran it out, and then brought it to the bracket to install it. So now that that's done, we take our wires and give her power. And ideally she's gonna the light up. Get her plugged in. We can just tuck it all the way back up in here. A decent amount of wiring, so you can find a spot pretty easily back behind this dash. So now we know that we have power, and that we have the little C, that's gonna mean it's connected. We do have a test box in the back. So once you hook up your trailer, you're gonna get the same exact screen that you see here. So we know that we have power running to it, but we wanna make sure it's talking to these seven ways. So, we have this fancy little test box. And when I do the manual override, it should give us some lights, which it is. So we know that power's going to our trailer. What you wanna do is just hook up your trailer. Maybe just go in a parking lot or something and override it. And if the brakes start to engage, you know that everything's talking correctly and you're good. And that's pretty much it for our look at the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller on our 2021 Ford Bronco..
