Can Tekonsha Repair a Broken Prodigy Brake Controller

Updated 12/17/2024 | Published 01/30/2015

Question:

I have a Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller that I purchased back in 2005 or 2006 that has always operated very satisfactorily. However recently someone driving my vehicle broke off the manual lever. I noticed that the pilot light that comes on when the brake pedal is depressed wasnt on. I checked the unit and found that the lever had been broken off, thus explaining why the unit wasnt functioning. My question is can I send the unit in to be repaired and could I get a quote for repairs before repair begins? Thanks for your advice in this matter in advance.

I spoke with my Tekonsha representative, who told me that they do not repair or offer a replacement manual brake lever for your Prodigy.

I'd recommend you replace the brake controller. The original Prodigy has been discontinued by the Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The P2 operates similarly to the original Prodigy, but it features a blue LED display, is compatible with electric over hydraulic braking systems and contains a relay that operates the trailer brake lamps when the manual brake switch on the controller is used. It can also be installed at any angle as long as it's level on the side to side axis and pointed so it's parallel to the direction of travel.

If you wanted to go with something that's a bit more budget-friendly, the Tekonsha Primus, part # TK90160 would be my recommendation. This controller has the same features and would operate just like your original Prodigy, but is less expensive than the P2.

@Gw Your brake controller gets its power from the cigarette lighter? That's not how they're usually installed.....
