Trailer brakes are only working on manually. This is on a 2014 dodge ram. I could not find the harness with the brake switch connector locally. So I bought a harness without it and took the red wire and spliced it to the connector above the brake switch.

It sounds like you have the red wired connected to the wrong circuit. You need to find the circuit from the cold side of your stop light switch that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed. Use a circuit tester, like # PTW2993, to check for power.
If you'd rather just use the plug in adapter it's part # 3023-P.
