Correct Bearing Kit for a Curt 5,100 lbs Axle

Updated 11/15/2024 | Published 10/17/2024

Question:

Hello, I have a bad vibration at slow and highway speeds so Im thinking about replacing my wheel bearings. I thought it was a bad rim so Ive already replaced all my rims and tires. I have a 2023 Grand Design Reflection 278BH with the Curt ABS Axles. Can you tell me which wheel bearing kit to purchase? Curt ABS Axles 5100 lbs 866-524-7821 ITEM 2021129546 S/N- S010302853 CURT52-SBSA-86.5-68.5-NOSP-OS-L-C65517-ABS-7226-BRONZE-30PT I think I also have a bent axle. Can you recommend a replacement 6000lb axle beam that will fit my hubs?

Thanks for the information and picture James! Your Curt 5,100 lbs capacity axle uses item # 25580 inner bearings and item # LM67048 outer bearings. So you would need the Bearing Kit item # BK3-300, which includes both bearings, along with both races, a grease seal and cotter pin. You'll need one kit per hub.

As far as a replacement axle goes you wouldn't be able to upgrade to a 6,000 lbs axle and keep the same hubs. The 5,200 lbs Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with E-Z Lube Spindles item # 8327816 is going to be our closest option. It uses the same size spindle and has a matching 86-1/2" Hub-face-to-hub-face length. You would need to remove the spring seats and install new ones item # TRSS300 because the ones on this axle are too far apart.

Hi Jerred, Sorry for the late reply. I've been putting off this replacement but pulled the camper last weekend and it reminded me of the issues. Can a bent axle cause chucking/vibrations I can feel in the truck? I've been trying to track down this issue all summer. I've inspected my brakes and bearings, replaced worn brass bushings in the leaf spring eyes, Inspected my CRE3000, even bought all new wheels + tires and had everything balanced. I still get this vibration on flat/good roads. I can feel it at slow parking lot speeds and highway speeds as well. The vibration seems to get better over 70mph. I also noticed on bumpy concrete on/off ramps I get a lot of abnormal bouncing. Even with Sumo springs. My camper is only 1 year old and towed great until about 4 months ago.

@JamesM Yes, those vibrations and the conditions you described could all be caused by a bent or broken axle. Was the wear consistent across the tread on your old tires? If there were parts of the thread that were more worn down this could indicated a bent axle. You can measure the center to center axle spacing on both sides as well as the clearance between the top of the tire and the inside of the fender on both sides. If those measurements aren't equal from side to side, it could indicate a bent axle.

@JerredH I upgraded from 15" wheels to 16" wheels to help level the camper to the truck. It now sits perfectly level but at that time I didn't know I had a bent axle and sold the old wheels and tires a few months ago. I didn't even think to check the wear pattern. My buddy was driving behind me and let me know the back wheels look bowed out at the bottom.

@JamesM Definitely sounding like a bent axle.
