Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire Feature Review

Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we'll take a look at this Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire, in a Load Range D. Now, this is an ST tire, which is a special trailer tire, has a sturdy sidewall so they can handle heavy loads. It is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on other vehicles. It is a Kenda Karrier Special Trailer Radial Tire.

Uses the double steel belts and the full nylon plies, which combine for superior function and long life. If you look at the tread, it's a silica-infused tread, and if you look at the blocks, you'll see some cuts or sipes in there. That's designed to help reduce hydroplaning. This does offer excellent handling in off-pavement situations, and as we mentioned, it's an ST tire, which meets the DOT, Department of Transportation specifications. Now, the wheel that this this tire will fit on is a size 13 inch to 4 1/2 inches wide, 13 inch to by five inches wide, and 13 inch by 5 1/2 inches wide.

Now, the tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall, ST for Special Trailer, 175/80R13. The R means that it is a radial tire. Section width on this is 6.8 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 24.1 inches, and we mentioned this as a Load Range D, which means it's an eight-ply rated tire, so the maximum load capacity is 1,650 pounds at 70 PSI. And the last thing I wanna mention is they do come with a speed rating stamped on 'em now, and it's on the sidewall, but it is a letter designation.

And where you find it is right after the tire size we went over, you'll see two numbers for the load index and then the letter M. Speed rating M will mean that this has an 81 mile per hour speed rating. But that should do it for a look at the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire in Load Range D.

  • What is Difference Between Kenda Karrier Tires AM102210 and part number KE78KV
Hey Steve, this is a great question but our Kenda Karrier tire part # KE78KV is the Kenda part number AM102210 so it's the exact same tire.

  • Looking For Tires With Higher Load Rating For Pop Up Camper
Hello Don, thanks for reaching out. As far as the ST175/80R13 tires, the highest weight capacity we offer would be 1,650 lbs like the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # KE78KV. If you are needing a higher weight rating, you will need to go with a larger size tire like a Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 # AM10208. This has a 1,710 lb load rating so much closer to your axle capacity. Do you have room in your wheel well area for slightly larger tires? Ideally you want at...

  • Will Going From Load Range C Tire To Load Range D Cause Any Ride Quality Issues?
Hello Justin, thanks for reaching out. Going from a load range C tire up to a load range D likely will not change the ride quality in any noticeable way. You would not be increasing the carrying capacity of your trailer, but the higher rated tires will be more robust and durable. If anything you will just be increasing your safety margins, and adding a bit of peace of mind. For a solid Load Range D 175/80-13 tire, I recommend the following: - Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire -...

  • Can Trailer Tire Load Range C be Replaced with a Load Range D
Hey Justin, you can definitely go to a Load Range D tire in place of a C and the only real "down side" is that you would have to put more pair pressure in the tire. It will give you more weight capacity if ever needed without any real draw back. There might be a small price difference too though. For that we have the part # KE78KV.

  • What is Difference between Karrier ST175/80R13 Tires AM10210 and KE78KV
Hey Walter, the Karrier tires part # AM10210 and # KE78KV both are really similar tires from Karrier. They both have same speed rating of 81 mph, Load Range of D, and weight capacity of 1,650 lbs. The only really noteworthy difference is the tread pattern. The part # AM10210 has more of what looks like a vehicle tread pattern and the part # KE78KV has a more basic type tread pattern. I would probably just go with the less expensive option if it were me as I don't think you'll ever end up...
