Looking For Tires With Higher Load Rating For Pop Up Camper

Updated 09/12/2025 | Published 08/17/2025

Question:

Good morning! I have a pop up camper that originally came with a 2000 pound axle. I wanted to add brakes so I replaced the original axle with a 3,500 brake axle custom made by Dexter to the original specs. My problem is now with the tires. I am still running the tires that came with the trailer, size 175/80-13. I can’t find a tire in that size that can handle the capacity of the new axle. I would like to have the added capacity if I need to bring more or heavier stuff. What options do I have?

Hello Don, thanks for reaching out. As far as the ST175/80R13 tires, the highest weight capacity we offer would be 1,650 lbs like the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # KE78KV.

If you are needing a higher weight rating, you will need to go with a larger size tire like a Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 # AM10208. This has a 1,710 lb load rating so much closer to your axle capacity.

Do you have room in your wheel well area for slightly larger tires? Ideally you want at least 3" between the tire and the fender, and at least 1" between the inside of the tire and the frame of the trailer. The ST185/80R13 are only about 1/2" larger in diameter than the ST175/80R13 so it would not be a huge increase in size.

Hey Don, did you have a chance to check if there's enough room in your wheel well for the larger ST185/80R13 tires? I'm asking because knowing your outcome could help others who are considering similar upgrades.
