Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Ordering was easy, order fulfillment was really fast, communication from etrailer was excellent, delivery was smooth, the message on the box was great "The bottom of this box should not be the end of our relationship." Still great! Ive referred many people to etrailer for their products and customer service.

I am very happy with my new spare tire. I had converted to Radials for better pothole and nail protection. I had the rims and could not find just the tire. It is going on my Whaler trailer. Yes even off season I have begun to spread the word about your prices. WEST MARINE WOULD ONLY SELL ME ONE ON A RIM AND IT WAS $160.00. I HIGHLY recommend your service people for their help. Since you told me about radial tires in a smaller size I may do 3 on my other trailer.
Your packing it was great because it was hard to open! That kept the tire in great condition. Dave Osler stamford CT.

by:

They seem like a good quality tire. No problems towing, seem to be wearing even.

And the price was the best I could find anywhere. Thanks Tara.

This was a replacement for a tire that had a hole in it due to staples in shipping box. They promptly processed a replacement and gave me a credit for a portion of the 2x mounting cost that I had to deal with.

  • Are Bias or Radial 175/80-13 Trailer Tires Better
The better 175/80-13 trailer tire between a bias tire and radial really just depends on the application. Neither option is better in particular for either load or sway which you specifically asked about, so long as you get the correct load rating. That said, bias tires are really only best for agricultural use while radial tires are best for normal, everyday roadways. The reason for that is bias tires have cords which run diagonally while radial tires have cords that run from side-to-side....

The closest radial tire we offer to the size you mentioned is the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire, part # AM10199. This is a load range C radial, special trailer tire that has a maximum load capacity of 1360 lbs at 50 psi. this tire would be approximately 1/2 inch smaller diameter in size than the tire size you rerferenced. We do offer a tire that is the size you mentioned but it is a bias ply tire. It is the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire, part # AM1ST79. This is a load...

It's not a stupid question at all! In this instance, you can obtain the 13 x 4-1/2 white powder coated wheel with a 5 lug on 4-1/2 inch bolt circle individually as part # AM20253, the ST175/80R13 Load Range C tire individually as part # AM10199 or the tire already mounted on the wheel as part # AM31957. The best size replacement we have for the old 6.50 x 13 tires on your trailer is a 175/80-13, the Karrier part # AM10199 for a radial option which is better for highway use or the Kenda part # AM1ST51 for a bias option which is better for off-road use. This new size is going to be about 0.6" larger in diameter and 0.3" larger in width. Your Sonic has a maximum tow rating of 2000 pounds. I checked the Chariot website and reviewed weight capacity for a single-motorcycle trailer, and the CS-9 model has a body load rating of 1575 lbs. All hitch receivers offered for your vehicle are rated at 2000 pounds. So in this case the overall towing weight limit is the lowest of the three, the 1575 pound trailer rating. You will still want to check the rating for your particular trailer. Given this, moving to Load Range C tires will...

We can help you out here, and you are right that the "R" stands for radial and the "D" for bias tires. The difference is bias tires have a stiffer sidewall than radial tires, so radials flex more and run cooler.
