Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Which Trailer Tire Size is best for a Jet Ski Trailer that has 4.80-12 Tires
Increasing tire width will not really benefit you in any significant way. You would see a slight increase in stability, but if the trailer already rides pretty straight, you may not see any improvement. The 5.30-12 tires would also make the trailer sit a bit higher. My suggestion would be to use part # AM30630. It is a galvanized wheel for 4 on 4 pattern. It is a load range C bias ply tire and each wheel would be capable of supporting 990 pounds at 90 psi, which should be more than enough...

  • Replacement Trailer Tire Recommendation for a 2004 Bass Tracker Panfish Boat Trailer
It sounds like you are overloading your current trailer tires or are pretty close to and should upgrade to a 5.30x12 tire with enough capacity. For that you would want the # AM10068 which has a capacity of 1,250 lbs at 105 psi per tire. Special trailer tires should be inflated to their maximum air pressure. If a trailer tire is inflated to a lower air pressure than the maximum, the amount of weight that the tire can carry will be reduced. If a heavier load is put on the trailer tire than...

Dave, we do have a tire/wheel setup similar to the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10068 with the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30790. This wheel measures 12" diameter x 4" wide, has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, and come with the Kenda bias ply tire that has a C load range.

  • How to Determine the Correct Over-Under Conversion Kit
In order to determine whether you need the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 (2-3/8") or # K71-385-00 (3") you will need to measure the diameter of your axle. If you get 2-3/8" then you need # K71-384-00 and if you get 3" then you need # K71-385-00. As far as tires/rims are concerned you will want to ensure you have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern (which is the most common 4 bolt pattern) I have included a link to an article that can help you with determining this. • Comparison of Two Kenda Tire and Wheel Combos Part # AM30670 and # AM30790
Both tires # AM30670 and # AM30790 are Kenda tires but there are a number of differences. For starters they're different sized tires. The # AM30670 is a 4.80-12 sized tire and # AM30790 is a larger 5.30-12 sized tire. The latter being about 3/4 of an inch wider and over an inch larger in diameter. Also, they both have a C Load Range but the larger # AM30790 has a higher weight capacity at 1,045 pounds when inflated to 80 psi. The # AM30670 is rated up to 990 pounds at 90 psi. With...

  • 2011 Jayco Jay Series Sport Wheel and Tire Replacement Recommendation

  • Availability of Galvanized Wheel and Tire 5.30-12 with Higher Speed Rating
Hey Scott, the only way to accomplish what you are looking for is to order the wheel and tire separately. For that you'd want the part # TT53012C for a tire that matches the size you need and has the higher speed rating of 81 mph plus the wheel part # AM20124. Now I wish we had the ability to mount tires here but that's not an option we have at this time so you would need to find a shop local to you and have them mount the tires.

  • What PSI Should Trailer Wheel and Tire be Inflated to In Size 5.30-12
Sounds like maybe you have more than one brand of tire on your trailer and there is multiple PSI requirements based on that. It is correct that you should always run the max pressure in the tire listed on the sidewall otherwise capacity is diminished and likelihood for failure is increased. For a wheel and tire in your size of 5.30-12 and a wheel bolt pattern of 4 on 4 like you need the part # AM30790 would be a really great option.

  • Does the Center Pilot Hole on a Trailer Wheel Have to Be an Exact Size to Fit Over the Hub
There are 2 different types of wheels you will find on a trailer: lug-centric and hub-centric. If your wheels attach to the hub using lug nuts then it is lug-centric. This means that the wheel centers on the hub using the lug nuts. If your wheels attach to the hub with wheel bolts and no lug nuts then it is hub-centric and the wheel centers on the hub using the center pilot hole. If you have the first type, lug-centric, then the pilot hole can be larger since it centers on the hub using...

  • Can Bigger Tires and Wheels be Used on a Aluminum Jet Ski Trailer with 145/12 Tires
You might be able to use a larger tire as long as there is space all around the existing tires for the larger size. The next size up from your 145/12 size is going to be 175/80-13. This tire size will be 1.3 inches wider and 2.8 inches taller. What this means is you will need more than 0.65 inches between the sides of the tires closest to the trailer and the trailer itself. And you will need more than 1.4 inches from the tops of the tires to anything above them, such as fenders. If you...

  • Can 4.80-12 Tires Be Upgraded to 5.30-12 Tires
The 5.30-12 tires, like the Kenda Bias Trailer Tire # AM30790 you were looking at, have about a 1-1/2" larger diameter than your 4.80-12 tires, so if your fender can accommodate 3/4" more tire and still retain 2" of height clearance (to account for suspension travel) you'll be good to go!
