Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Wheel/tire are good quality. Wheel was stamped with a manufacturing date of last month, so they weren't sitting in a warehouse for years waiting to be sold. I'll be buying these again. This wheel/tire combo was cheaper than buying just the tires from a local tire shop.

  • Can 5.70-8 Tire Replace 18.5x8.5x8 on Trailer
Hey Dan, yeah that would be a solid upgrade. The tire diameter would be just a little bit taller and also narrower but you wouldn't have any clearance issues. For a 5 lug wheel you'd want the part # AM30155or for a 4 lug wheel part # AM30153.

  • What Is The Purpose of the 3 Places A Wheel Steps Down From Outside Edge to Inside?
On the Steel Trailer Wheel # AM20006, I assume the 3 dimples you are referring to are the 3 places the wheel steps down in size. The outside largest diameter point is where the wheel is outside of the tire for a little protection of the sealing bead. The second step is where the tire bead rests and seals against the wheel to allow the air to stay pressurized without having an inner tube. The third step is down to the mounting flange to give strength and stability. Each tire will have...

  • Can I Upgrade to a Load Range D Tire Size 165/65-8
I may have a potential solution for you, but the tire size 165/65-8 is only available in load range C. To step up in load range, you will have to switch to tire size 215/60-8 Tire and Wheel # AM3H325 or 5.70-8 # AM30155 which are both slightly larger in diameter by about 1-1/2 inch and the 215/60-8 tire # AM3H325 is about 2 inches wider while the 5.70-8 tire # AM30155 is about 1/2 inch narrower. With the size difference, you will just need to make sure you have the clearance available...

  • Picking Out a Replacement Wheel and Tire Spare for Coleman Destiny Tent Trailer
Thankfully trailer wheels don't use a wide range of 5 lug bolt patterns so if you have a 5 lug wheel with a tire size of 5.70-8 mounted on it the part # AM30155 would fit and work well. To further verify your bolt pattern though I attached a help article that details how to measure and verify this.

  • Recommended 5.70-8 Tire and Wheel with Compatible Hub for Axle
We do have some options for you to add a 5.7-8 size tire and a hub to your trailer. For a wheel/tire combination I recommend going with the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with Wheel # AM30155. This has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern and comes with a load range of D (1,075 lbs at 100 psi). Since 8" wheels are typically installed on 2,000 lb axles you would need the hub assembly # AKIHUB-545-2-EZ-1K if you have L44643 bearings or assembly # AKIHUB-545-2-EZ-2K for L44649 bearings. Both options...

  • Replacing 18.5x8.50-8 Tires with a 5.70-8 Trailer Tire
The Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with Wheel part # AM30155 measures 18" diameter x 5.9" wide and fits a standard 5 on 4" bolt pattern. The 18.5x8.50-8 tire measures 17.25" diameter x 8.6" wide. Therefore, the new size will be slightly larger in diameter by .75" and smaller in width by 2.7". I don't know how much space you have but you should be able to use the above to answer your question.

  • How Fast Can Trailer Tire in Size 5.70-8 Go
Normally tire speed ratings are listed right after the tire size as a letter. For example the letter M represents and 81 mph speed rating. If you can't find a speed rating after the tire size the safe assumption will be that the tire is limited to 65 mph which used to be the standard speed for trailer tires. I tried to find the speed rating of the Hi Run 5.70-8 that you have and only could find the listing "applicable for high speed driving" but not an actual rating. So based on our tires...

  • Do Trailer Tire Sizes 5.70-8 and 18.5 x 8.5 - 8 use Same Wheel Width
The rim width requirements between the two sizes you mentioned are different enough that either size would not fit the same rim. The 5.70-8 fits 3-3/4 inch wide rims and the 18.5 x 8.5 - 8 requires a 7 inch wide wheel. If you want to go with a 5.70-8 size you'll need to replace the wheel with it too like with the # AM30155 which has a white wheel.

  • Recommended Tire Pressure for Kenda 5.70-8 Trailer Tire with White Wheel
With trailer tires you have to keep them inflated to the max PSI that's listed on the tire at all times to ensure you get the full weight capacity and you prevent heat build up from causing failure of the tires. For the part # AM30155 you need to keep 100 psi in them at all times.

  • Downsizing Trailer Wheel and Tire Combination to Lower Personal Water Craft PWC Trailer Height
The 5.70-8 could be a viable replacement size for your PWC, but I also have another solution that may work to make loading and unloading easier. The benefits of downsizing your tire and wheels are mainly the height loading aspect. With your current setup you have an outer diameter of 20.5 and the down sized tire is 18.1 inches. You may also see some ride stability because the center of gravity will be lower so you may get less sway when towing. Some drawbacks of downsizing your tires...

  • What PSI Should Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel be Inflated To
With trailer tires you always want to inflate them to the max psi that is listed on the sidewall of the tire. In the case of the # AM30155 that would be 100 psi. This ensures you get the full weight capacity out of the tire and prevent heat build up. The higher the Load Range of the tire the higher the pressure requirement would end up being generally speaking.

  • Replacement 5.70-8 Tires and Wheels for 1992 Coleman Pop-Up Camper
It sounds like your 2-3/4" hole measurement comes from the pilot hole diameter and you are comparing that to the 4-1/2" measurement from a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. When measuring the bolt pattern on a wheel like yours with an odd number of bolt holes, you want to measure from the center of one hole to the farthest edge of either of the two farther holes. More than likely this will be 4-1/2". Assuming that is correct, you can use the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel #...

I did some research and it looks like your 1997 Cushman Titan uses 5.70 x 8 tires. The tire/wheel combo I recommend is the Kenda part # AM30155. This combo is a Load Range D mounted on an 8-inch diameter rim with a 5 on 4-1/2 wheel bolt pattern. This maximum load rating for this combo is 1,075 lbs at 100 psi. • Will Kenda 5.70-8 Tire & Wheel With 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern Work For Boat Trailer
Yes, for your boat trailer with 5.70-8 tires with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern you can absolutely use the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM30155. The white wheels on this combo will work with a boat trailer, but I do recommend considering the same option but with galvanized wheels. Reason is, galvanized wheels are going to offer you better corrosion resistance, which can be important for boat trailers, especially if they are used quite often....

The backspacing is not really the issue, it is the tire width on your current versus new tires. Most trailer tires have a zero offset meaning the mounting surface of the wheel is in the center of the wheel so the tire width becomes important. A 175/80-13 tire that you currently have is about 6.9 inches wide and 24.1 inches tall. A 205/65-10 like # AM3H390, is 8.3 inches wide and 20.5 inches tall. The larger tire will end up being 2 inches taller overall so you would end up with 1 inch less of fender clearance vertically. For a tire in this size that would work well you would want the part # AM30155. This is a Load Range D tire with a 1,075 lb capacity at 100 psi.
