Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Replacement Size 5.70-8 Trailer Tires
In order to find the correct tires for your trailer, we will also want to take wheel bolt pattern into consideration. All of the 5.70-8 size tires that we carry have either a 4 on 4 bolt pattern or a 5 on 4-1/2 pattern. I have attached a help article on finding your wheel bolt pattern for you. If your trailer has a maximum weight capacity of 850 pounds, even if you'll be carrying less weight, with your size tire you will want to use a Load Range B tire. The Load Range B 5.70-8 size tires...

  • Correct load Range Tires for my 1993 Coleman Cedar Pop Up
The dry weight of your 1993 Coleman Cedar Pop-Up camper is right at 1,000 lbs. You then have to add anything you've loaded into it to that number. Divide that in half and each tire should have a weight rating that is above that. The Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel Load Range B part # AM30100 for instance offers a 715 lb. per tire load limit for a total of 1430 lbs. capacity. If you have loaded more than 430 lbs. in the camper this is not sufficient. Going up to a...

  • Replacement 5.70-8 Tire and Wheels for Taylor Dunn Burden Carrier
The Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer tire with 8 Inch White Wheel will work well as a replacement tire for your burden carrier based on the information outlined in the manual. All of the wheels we offer in this size have a solid center wheel, not a spoke wheel. If you need a wheel with a 4 on 4 inch wheel bolt pattern, you will want to use part # AM30080. If you need a wheel with a 5on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern, you will want to use # AM30100. If you only need a tire with no wheel,...

  • Recommended Tire And Wheel Sizes To Change To For A Camper With 5.70-8 Tires
When you say blowouts and attribute them to heat buildup, you are correct. The reason you have heat buildup in tires is not just because of the size, it will also be from overloading, damage to the tires and age. So to just change size first might not solve the problem. If the tires hit curbs a lot it would cause damage to the sidewalls and form a weak spot, which would allow the heat to buildup and go to the weakest spot in the tire and fail. Also any punctures or repairs to the tires...

  • Taller Tire Size Recommendation to Replace 4.80-8 Trailer Tire
For a tire size that is 2 inches taller than your 4.80-8 tire size that will still fit your current rims you would want the 5.70-8 size tire like the part # AM10013 that has a capacity of 1,075 lbs at 100 psi. For a lower capacity tire that doesn't require nearly as much tire pressure we have the part # AM10010 which has a capacity of 715 lbs at 50 psi.

  • Recommended 8" 5 Lug Wheel and Tire Combination For 200lb Trailer
I would be happy to make a recommendation for you. I recommend taking a look at the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range B # AM30100 which is 5.8" wide and has the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern which is likely what your trailer has, but you can confirm this by measuring the bolt pattern on your current wheels following the included diagram. With out knowing the size of your current tires I cannot confirm if this will fit, but it measures in at an overall...

  • Can 5.70-8 Tires be Upgraded to 10 Inch Tires on Wheel w/ 5 on 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern
Yes, you can upgrade from a 5.70-8 tire and wheel like # AM30100 to a 10 inch tire and wheel so long as you have the needed clearance. With trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. A 5.70-8 tire measures 5.8" wide and 18.1" in diameter, and a 10 inch tire - a 205/65-10 - measures 8.3" wide and 20.8" in diameter. So if...

  • Wheel and Tire # AM30100 Recommendation for a 1989 Karavan Trailer
The Wheel and Tire part # AM30100 that you referenced has the same tire size and wheel bolt pattern as what you currently have so it should work well as an exact replacement. It has the capacity of 715 lbs at 50 psi. The thing about trailer tires is that they only have their max capacity when they are inflated to their max psi. So you would have to keep this tire inflated to 50 psi. The capacity for a trailer tire is meant as the capacity for just the single wheel/tire. If your trailer...

  • Available Tires and Wheel/Tire Products in Size 5.70-8
We do offer pre-mounted combination wheel/tire products and also tires only in the 5.70-8 size you referenced. All of these items use pneumatic tires that inflate to a particular psi pressure, using a standard Schrader valve like those on car tires. We offer no solid tires for your requirement. These tires will use psi pressures of either 50-, 75- or 100-psi in order to reach their maximum rated weight capacities and will fit on a wheel that measures 8 x 3-3/4-inches. • What Does The Letter R Mean On Tires
The letter R means that the tire has a radial construction. The tire/wheel combo you referenced, part # AM30100 is an 8 inch bias-ply tire with a load range B on a steel wheel that has a 5 on 4-1/2 wheel bolt pattern. The maximum load on this tire is 715 lbs at 50 psi. I have attached some helpful articles that explain wheel and tire sizing and what each of the letters and numbers mean you can check out.

  • Which Size Wheels Fit The 7" Hub and Drum Assembly AKHD-545-2-2K?
I have a replacement wheel and tire option for you, but none of the 7" hub and drum assemblies including the # 8-257-5UC3 and # AKHD-545-2-2K require a minimum wheel size of 10". So you can keep using your # 8-257-5UC3, but you will need to replace the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range B # AM30100 with a 10" wheel # AM20046, tire # AM1HP52, and valve stems # AM20903. • Can Larger Tires and Wheels be Used on a Trailer with 5.70-8 Tires
Different wheels can have different offsets but usually the offset is zero. The 5.70-8 is a little wider than a 5.30-12 so either the wheels did have an offset or the tires were rubbing on something else (like a fender) considering they are almost 4 inches taller than the original tires you had. If you go to a 12 inch then a 4.80-12 is more narrow and they fit the same wheels as a 5.30-12. So you could keep the wheels (if they don't have an offset) and just have 4.80-12 tires mounted by...

We do not get any foam-filled or solid 5.70-8 trailer tires from our suppliers and we do not mount wheels and tires in our facility. They come mounted from the manufacturer.

  • Is Trailer Wheel and Tire # AM30100 Balanced
The tire and wheel combos we carry like # AM30100 are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What our tire manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

You are correct that the shape of the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10010 isn't reflected 100% accurately in the video (attached) due to it not being mounted and properly inflated. Tires themselves cannot have an offset because it would change the entire way that the tire is constructed. The only time you will see an offset is with the wheel it is mounted on.
