Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

The Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range B, are exactly what you see. They look great on our trailer. the service was prompt and very polite. They didn't have what we originally ordered in stock; so they provided us with information of a comparison; although a little more expensive they were a higher weight limit so worked well for us. We would definitely recommend etrailer.com

by:

I had ordered two boat trailer tires thru etrailer.com. I had ordered the wrong lug pattern. When I called etrailer they talk me thru and we got the right tires. They sent me info to send back the wrong tires. I received the correct tires two days later. The sales person was great to work with

by:

Tire was delivered quickly, well packaged ( with slots on each side to handle easily). etrailer is customer centric: great communication and they handle any issues quickly and fairly - one of the best online retailers I’ve used ( several orders now). Advice is great and accurate. Prices are competitive, no reason to use anyone else.

by:

Great! Love doing business with etrailer. Not worth messing with dismounting old and mounting new ones. I keep an old one for a spare!

by:

Excellent product, great description on the website, reviews are incredibly helpful. The price is competitive but the customer service totally blows away any other retailer! I have a small pop up camper with tiny tires. I found that someone had asked a question on the etrailer website about upgrading tires on the very same make & model camper I have. The answer from etrailer made me wonder if they might have totally missed the mark on recommending this tire. But, I've had amazingly good luck with etrailer and I went ahead and ordered the tires -- and they are perfect, great fit and a huge upgrade! I ordered this on July 3 (late in the day, right before the holiday) and got my order in just a few days - amazing!

Comments
Still great tires and a huge improvement over the tires I had. They ride well, not much wear and the extra 2 inches of ground clearance is great.

Very pleased with my purchase shipment not to long of a wait will buy again thank you

I think your handling of my modest little order was done excellently and with a lot of genuine "class". I'm very pleased with the service and the product! The rims and tires are already mounted on my Terra Mite backhoe; everything went smoothly and without any problem!

Thanks for the great service. I don't know that I'll need much of the same in the future but would definitely be back to etrailer.com if the need arises. I've already bragging about your cool, efficient, quick and quality business to my son-in-law already whose more likely to have trailer needs in the immediate future!

Comments
Very thoughtful and a good business practice, as well. The tires have been put to a lot of hard, regular use and have worked out very well! I have them on my Terra Mite back hoe and have been doing a lot of rough and tumble digging and loading mostly through wooded areas. Ive been very pleased with the tires, the price and service...including the follow-up. I recommend you guys highlly!

Quick delivery and product was accurate. Thank you

by:

Great tires with a wide footprint in a small tire, which makes for stable trailering. That's important especially when the load is light (in my case a 165 pound sailing dinghy (when loaded with gear, 190 lbs). I mounted this size from etrailer on both my boat trailers (the other for a 1500 lb 18 ft sailboat). I hauled the sailboat using these tires from Cape Cod to Virginia (13 hours on I-95, which is really beat up in some places) and loved the feel of these tires. Etrailer staff helped me understand they would fit my trailers.

by:

The price and ease of the whole process was amazing. Quick delivery and a perfect fit to my trailer.

by:

Everything went smoothly. I read the paragraph on sizing the various 5 bolt patterns and got it right for a change. The tires arrived filled to 50 psi but the spec sheet said 35 psi was correct. We adjusted them when we mounted them, but it confused us a bit. I've used Kenda for my bikes for a long time. No experience with trailer tires. We'll see.

by:

Great tires/wheels for my little trailer I tow behind my lawn tractor.

by:

Very pleased with the ordering and shipping process. Was kept informed of status throughout and tires/wheels are exactly as the web page described. I put them on a triton utility trailer and they look great

by:

This is the best company I have ever bought anything from, I order on a federal holiday and it was shipped on that day four tires and wheels delivered in 3 days no shipping cost. OUTSTANDING!!! Will use this company for all my trailer needs!!

by:

Just as described in the info. Free shipping. At my doorstep in in a day and a half. Can't beat this company. This is my sixth time shopping with ETrailer and will shop here again.

by:

Exactly what I ordered, delivered in a very timely manner, your video installation instructions were great, Thanks, I will buy again when I need to.

by:

Good tire, rides great. Thanks again etrailer for another fast and accurate order!!!!

by:

  • Boat Trailer Wheel and Tire Recommendation for Tire Size 20.5x8-10 with 5 Lug Pattern
The Kenda Trailer Tire and Wheel part # AM3H350 that you referenced is the correct tire size and bolt pattern for what your boat trailer needs so it would be a great choice.

  • Backspacing of Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10 White Wheel # AM3H350
Trailer wheels like the # AM3H350 that you referenced have a zero offset which means the mounting flange of the wheel is exactly in the middle of the wheel. That means the backspacing of this would be 4.15 inches since this tire has a section width of 8.3 inches. So you'd need 4.15 inches of clearance between the hub face on your axle and the frame of the trailer.

  • Wheel and Tire Recommendation to Go From 8 inch Trailer Tires to 10 inch Trailer Tires
As long as you have the additional width clearance for a wider tire a ST205/65-10 tire and rim could work very well for you. This tire will be about 2 inches wider than your current setup. Since you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you would instead want the part # AM3H350. This wheel has a 1,650 lb capacity per wheel/tire so it would be more than enough for you.

  • Easiest Way to Determine Weight Capacity of a 3 Axle Trailer
That depends on a few things. However, the easiest way to determine the capacity of a trailer is to check the plaque or sticker that should be near the coupler of the trailer. There should be the capacity of the trailer and the axles listed there. The size tires you have should also have plenty of weight capacity, but you will want to make sure they are inflated to their maximum psi rating to ensure the highest capacity and for the best tire wear possible. You should check the condition...

The 10" wheel and tire is 8.3" wide and 20.8" tall. This is 0.3" wider and 0.8" taller than the stock wheel and tire that is included on the trailer. • Is Bolt Pattern for 8 Inch Wheels the Same as 10 Inch Wheels
You may not have to change out your hubs it just depends what your current bolt pattern is. Both 8 inch and 10 inch trailer wheels come in 4 on 4 and 5 on 4-1/2 bolt patterns so all you need to do is choose a 10 inch wheel that matches what you have. For examples, we have part # AM3H330 which is a 205/65-10 size tire on a wheel with a 4 on 4 pattern and part # AM3H350 is the exact same tire on a wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. • Selecting Trailer Tires for 1500-lb Maximum GVWR Tent Trailer
You are correct that any trailer tire, regardless of size or weight rating, must be inflated to the maximum psi pressure that is indicated on the tire's sidewall. A tire can deliver its rated performance only when fully inflated to the manufacturer's pressure specification. The tire size you have, 20.5x8x10, has a corresponding metric size designation of 205/65-10 and in this size we offer both tires alone and tires that are premounted on wheels. All are bias ply types that can be seen...

  • Recommended Tire and Wheel for an Old Coleman Columbia Pop Up Camper
Your 20.5x8.0-10 tire can be swapped to a 205/65-10 without issue at all. I suggest going with the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range D # AM3H410 as this will have a load rating D (1,320 pounds and 70 psi), and a speed rating of 65 miles per hour. This will get you a much better tire, but will have virtually the same wheel keeping the stock look. Due to the limited space you look to have, I would not recommend going with a larger tire.

  • Replacing 18 X 8.5-8" Wheels and Tires With Larger 205/65-10" Wheels and Tires
You can replace your current 18x8.50-8 # AM89992 with a Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel # AM3H350 as long as you are able to maintain the proper tire clearance. The new tire will be 0.2" narrower and 3" taller over all. This means that your tire clearance vertically will be reduced by 1-1/2". A 2" lift would allow you to still maintain proper clearances needed with the larger tires.

  • Can 5.70-8 Tires be Upgraded to 10 Inch Tires on Wheel w/ 5 on 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern
Yes, you can upgrade from a 5.70-8 tire and wheel like # AM30100 to a 10 inch tire and wheel so long as you have the needed clearance. With trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. A 5.70-8 tire measures 5.8" wide and 18.1" in diameter, and a 10 inch tire - a 205/65-10 - measures 8.3" wide and 20.8" in diameter. So if...
