Features to know about

Restore Confident, Balanced Stopping: Self-Adjusting 12-1/4" x 5" Electric Brake Assemblies

Dragging or uneven brakes can make towing tough. These etrailer electric trailer brakes automatically adjust, keeping the shoes perfectly aligned with the drum so braking power stays consistent. The self-adjusting design means no more crawling underneath to tweak the star gear—just smooth, predictable stops on every trip. Each kit includes left-hand and right-hand brake assemblies for one 12,000-lb axle.

Built for Heavy Loads: Automotive-Grade Brake Pads Bonded to the Shoes

When you’re pulling serious weight, friction material quality matters. These 12-1/4" x 5" assemblies use automotive-grade pads that are fully bonded—not riveted—for more contact area and better torque. The bonded pads keep things quiet and eliminate rivet scraping as the material wears down. Tapered edges reduce stutter and help prevent lockup, giving you confident control under load.

Made to Last in Tough Conditions: E-Coated Backing Plates and Dust Shields

Heavy trailers kick up plenty of debris and moisture, but these brakes are built to handle it. Each assembly has rust-resistant, e-coated backing plates and full dust shields that protect the internal components from dirt and grime. That means fewer issues with corrosion and smoother operation season after season.

Straightforward Upgrade for Standard 12K Axles: Direct Fit with 7-Bolt Mounting

Whether you’re replacing worn brakes or upgrading your setup, this kit is designed to fit most standard hub-and-drum assemblies from etrailer, Dexter, and Lippert (LCI). The 7-bolt mounting flange pattern matches common 12K axles rated for 12,000 lbs and wheels sized 15" or larger. You’ll need mounting hardware part # BRKH122510 sold separately to finish the install.

Safety You Can Trust: QAI, CSA, and SAE-N Certified

These assemblies aren’t just built strong—they’re certified for safety and performance by QAI, CSA, and SAE-N standards. Each set has been tested under real-world braking conditions so you can tow knowing your equipment meets rigorous quality benchmarks.

These brake assemblies where exactly what I was looking for. Because these are an odd size, my local supplier did not have them in stock and would have taken a week to get them and the price would have been double what I paid on etrailer
Thanks again Julie N. for you help processing my order. I got them in 3 days.
by:

@FeliksT We're glad to hear that you're happy with your brake assemblies!
by:
Brakes worked well for the first ten months are so. The only complaint I have with this system are the magnets. Within the last month are so I’ve have to replace two of the magnets due to the wires on them breaking. I just think for the price of this system there should be better wires used.

by:

Great, They work Good.

by:
I installed these brakes on both axles both sides of a 35' tandem dually trailer. I've only pulled it roughly 5 times for about 200 miles total. The only issue I've had, is with the brakes cranked to "10" they still barely brake, won't even skid the tires on grass. Not sure how far you have to go before they are "broke in", otherwise they were an easy install with no issues.
by:
My order came very quick just with standard shipping witch was great. Down side was it was packaged very poorly. The box wasn't heavy enough for everything inside itso was coming apart when it was dropped off. There was very little packing inside so parts were bouncing around and into each other. Two of the 4 brakes had come apart so I had to reassemble them. Luckily no parts were missing. Took me 45 minutes to reassemble them. It all needed better box and sent in multiple packages.
by:
My box was open and I had to put together 1 out of the 4 assemblies before I could put it on my trailer not impressed with the shipping box and when you spend $xxx on parts you would think it would be better packaged in a box
by:
haven't installed yet, if they are same as first 2 I ordered everything will be ok. thanks
by:
Part is correct but very poor packing quality for the shipment leaves me worried about damage.
by:
Excellent product
by:
Pricing very competitive & received before expected delivery!
by:
Easy ordering and fast delivery. Parts installed with no problems.

right stuff for the right price

  • Replacement Hub/Drum and Brake Assemblies for Dexter 12k Axle
Hey Mike, we have a similar hub that does fit a 12k Dexter dually hub with the part # 8-214-8UC1. The 10k part # 8-214-5 does have same bearings and seal so it would fit technically but it would not be weight rated for a 12k axle. For a drum you would then want the part # DX34XR and brake assemblies part # AKEBRK-12. However, we do not carry a 12k spindle at this time.

  • Troubleshooting Electric Brakes Not Fully Engaging
Thanks for the purchase and if your Electric Trailer Brake Kit w/ Dust Shields # AKEBRK-12 are not giving you full braking, even with the brake controller all the way up, you likely have a wiring issue as that is the root cause of most trailer brakes not giving you full stopping power. First, start by checking your trailer connectors to make sure they are free from corrosion, which will be white or green in color and if it is there, clean as needed. Corrosion in a connector will hamper...

  • Replacing 10K AL-KO 12-1/4 x 5 Inch Electric Brake Assemblies on Trailer
We do have 12-1/4 x 5 inch electric drum brake assemblies available, however we have found that with higher-rated assemblies like these the AL-KO units aren't able to be easily swapped with other brands. The etrailer.com Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-12 might work well but it features a 7 bolt pattern, which likely doesn't match up to the mounting flanges on your AL-KO axles. If this is the case you will need to try and weld the brake backing plate directly to the flange for them...

  • Can 12k Axle Be Converted from Electric Over Hydraulic to Electric
Yes it definitely is possible to replace the electric over hydraulic brake setup on your trailer with electric brakes. The 12k axles are a little more particular than the lower capacity axles so you will need to know what brand axles you have. As long as they are Dexter or Lippert you can use the brake assembly set part # # AKEBRK-12 to replace the assemblies you have now. These will fit in the same drums your axle has currently.

We have electric brakes that have the weight capacity for a tandem axle trailer with a nearly 24,000 lb GVWR, and I can tell you how to determine if they will fit, but we don't have any way of knowing the correct brakes for a 1994 Trail King trailer. The electric brakes that do have the capacity you need are the following: - Electric Trailer Brake Kit w/ Dust Shields - Self-Adjusting - 12-1/4" - Left/Right Hand - 12K # AKEBRK-12 These brakes measure 12-1/4" diameter x 5" wide, so in order...

  • Replacement Brake Assemblies for Trailer with Dexter 12k Axles
We do have the correct brake assemblies you are needing for your Dexter 12k axles that has 5 inch wide assemblies that attach with a 6 lug bolt pattern. The best option is the etrailer.com assemblies part # AKEBRK-12 that come with both sides. The price on these compared to the Dexter equivalents # 23-442-443 is considerably better and the quality is essentially the exact same.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer with One Hub That Locks Up Even with Low Power on Brake Controller
On a trailer as large and heavy as a tandem-axle 40-footer you really do want all four hubs delivering braking force. Wheel bearing grease, or oil from an oil-bath type hub, can certainly damage drum brakes. Usually such leakage will cause reduction in braking power because the grease/oil reduces the pad-to-drum friction that provides the braking force. Grease- or oil-contaminated brake assemblies do need to be replaced; it is not really possible to clean them out properly if they actually...

  • Converting Drum Brakes On A Dexter Military Trailer Axle With 8 On 6-1/2
I would be happy to help you choose the correct brake setup for your Dexter Torflex Axle, however there are no manufacturers that currently make electric disc brakes. All disc brakes are powered by a hydraulic cylinder. If you wish to use a disc brake setup controlled by an in-cab brake controller, you will want to consider the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes part # HBA16 and an electric brake controller such as the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller...

  • Parts Needed to Add Electric Brakes to Trailer With 12,000 Pound Air Brakes
More than likely you will be able to just add a brake flange and won't need to swap out the spindles. If by 12k air brakes you mean you have tandem 6,000 lb axles then you could use the Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle # 4-44-1. You will want to take this to an axle shop for installation since they will need the proper equipment to mount it. If you actually have 12,000 lb axles then we do not have a brake flange or spindle/brake flange that large. If you can't find either then your...

  • Converting Electric-Over-Hydraulic Brakes to Electric Brakes on Trailer
If your trailer is currently equipped with electric-over-hydraulic drum brakes then a good portion of the conversion process to change it to an electric only brake setup will simply be removing existing components that are no longer needed. You will need to replace the hydraulic brake assemblies with electric units such as the etrailer.com # AKEBRK-12 if your Dexter 12K axle currently has 12-1/4 inch x 5 inch drums and re-wire the trailer accordingly. I have attached a great article on...

In order to loosen the star nut on electric brakes you can use Adjustment Spoon # W80630 you should be able to rotate the star counter-clockwise or "down" to loosen them. Yes, the etrailer.com Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-12 that you referenced will work perfectly on your trailer in place of the Dexter K23-443-00 (Right Hand) and K23-443-00 (Left Hand) that your manual calls for.
