Video Transcript for Brophy Hitch Adapter Review

Today we'll be taking a look at the Brophy Hitch Adapter, 1 1/4 to 2 inch trailer hitch receiver with a 5 inch rise, part number HT5R. The Brophy Hitch Adapter is going to allow you to convert your Class I and II 1 1/4 inch receiver to your 2 inch receiver, allowing you to use any 2 inch accessory. It offers a 5 inch rise, giving us more ground clearance here at the rear of the vehicle for our accessories. We're using a cargo carrier with our adapter here today, but it's also going to work great for your bike racks or any other 2 inch accessories. Now please keep in mind when using this adapter, it does cut your tongue weight capacity in half. It is not recommended for towing use, so no ball mounts. This is a much more economical solution than having two bike racks or two cargo carriers for multiple vehicles and it's definitely cheaper than purchasing a different hitch.

In addition to the rise, it gives us a 7 inch extension. It's also made out of a sturdy steel construction with a black powder coat finish, so it's going to stand up to the elements. It has a 300 pound weight capacity. It's an extraordinarily easy installation. We've got our adapter plugged into our 1 1/4 inch receiver and our accessory plugged into our adapter. The pin and clips are sold separately from the hitch adapter, so you'll need to pick some up here at etrailer.com.

Here at the adapter end, we've got a PC3, this is going to be our 5/8th pin and clip. Here at the hitch end, we've got a PC2, that's going to be our 1/2 inch pin and clip. That's going to complete our look at the Brophy Hitch Adapter, 1 1/4 to 2 inch trailer hitch receiver with a 5 inch rise, part number HT5R.

I bought this adapter so that I could mount a bike rack on the back of my 2012 Honda Civic. The adapter got the bikes high enough so that they wouldn't hit the pavement when backing out of my driveway and transitioning to the street. The product is definitely strong and well made. It was put to the test with a very heavy steel thule bike rack that was definitely heavier than all 4 of the bikes that were mounted on it. The fit was precise so it didn't hit my rear bumper as well. 725317

Because of low ground clearance I bought this high 5" high rise for my carrier that I bought from you all and it worked great. I loved the ability to walk between the carrier and trunk. The high rise is easy to install. We had absolutely no issues on our 3000 mile round trip journey. The hitch, high rise and carrier were all purchased from you. 309669

Thank you for the personal touch on the order. Not many company's do this. This is a good product and a good price. My car sits low and we needed to raise the carrier up. Looks like this will work out. 111921

Using this product now for inserting 2 inch bike rack. Welds look strong. We needed the 5 inch rise, just to create additional ground clearance for our very long bike rack. Our car is a 2019 Toyota Corolla S Hatchback and it is pretty low to the ground. All in all a great product. Only gave 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons. 1) I think the 5 inch rise causes a little bit of un-necessary extra sway in the bike rack. Not exactly the fault of the product itself, but just a physics thing. 2) The product I received had some paint chipped off in places. Looks like it might have been a re-stock from a return. Not a big deal, since these things are going to get chipped anyway, but still, the product was not in 'brand new' condition as received. That said, I would definitely recommend purchasing from etrailer as a company. Product was solid, delivered quickly, free shipping, and I love the installation videos that they make. This company is actually trying to do a really good job and they are succeeding! 808690

I've had this adapter for nearly 1.5 yrs now and it has been the best solution to use a 2" hitch bike rack on a small vehicle. It's incredibly sturdy and durable (backed up into a few parking curbs over the last 1.5 yrs when the rack wasn't on, but no dents to prove it). One drawback is the bit of wiggle between the hitch and the adapter, but if you have a local shop that can weld them together, then you're all set. Definitely recommend! This was used on a 2012 VW Golf 2 door hatchback, base model. I traded my car in today for another model, so apologies I don't have photos to share! 794538

Comments
Another option for easily removing the wiggle between your 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch and hitch adapter is an Anti-Rattle Device like the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061-125
Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 1-1/4" Trailer Hitches

Works ok. The dimensions of the receiver (female) are a bit large. So the bike rack I purchased rattles & sways to-and-fro when mounted. I attempted to place some wood shims in the adapter to minimize this occurrence, but was unsuccessful. 691210

To help prevent sway and rattle of your bike rack in the 2 inch hitch receiver, an anti-rattle device like the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061

Ask the Experts about this Brophy Hitch Adapters

  • Will the Brophy Hitch Adapter 1-1/4 Inch to 2 Inch With Rise Clear My Rear Bumper
In order to determine if the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver with 5" Rise part # HT5R will require trimming of the rear bumper you will need to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole outward to the rear edge of the bumper fascia. This measurement will need to be no more than 3-5/8" in order for the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver with 5" Rise to clear the rear bumper. I have attached a photo to assist with the above but I don't have any measurements...

The maximum tongue weight of this adapter is 300 pounds. Please be aware when using any hitch adapter the tongue weight capacity of your hitch will be decreased by 50 percent. According to Brophy, the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4 to 2 inch Adapter # HT5R the weight capacity of the adapter will exceed the weight capacity of the 1-1/4 inch hitch. Therefore the capacity of the hitch will be the limiting factor. For example if the hitch has a tongue weight capacity of 300 pounds then the hitch adapter...

  • Compatibility of Brophy HT5R Hitch Adapter with 2-Inch Bike Carrier on 2016 Mazda CX-3
Hitch adapters can sometimes be handy for a quick-fix, but since your 2016 Mazda CX-3 can only accept a light-duty 1-1/4-inch hitch I really cannot recommend using any type of hitch adapter. Here's why. Any type of adapter, such as the Brophy # HT5R, will cost you half of your hitch's rated capacity. So a 200-lb-rated Class I hitch like my recommended Draw-Tite # 24933 will have only a 100-lb capacity if used with the Brophy adapter. The reason for this loss of hitch capacity is that...

The only issue with using an adapter is that it cuts your tongue weight capacity in half. The Brophy # HT5R will give you 5" of rise and has a 2" receiver but since your cargo carrier weighs 29 lbs it would limit you to carrying 71 lbs of cargo with your carrier.
