Video Transcript for Brophy Hitch Adapter Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Brophy Hitch Adapter, 1 1/4 to 2 inch trailer hitch receiver, part number HTAD. The Brophy Hitch Adapter is going to easily convert your class II, 1 1/4 inch receiver to a 2 inch receiver, allowing you to use 2 inch accessories. Now we're using our cargo carrier with our hitch adapter here today, but this would also be great for bike racks or any other 2 inch accessory. Keep in mind, this is going to cut your tongue weight capacity in half and it's not recommended for use with towing. This is a much more economical solution that having to have two bike racks or two cargo carriers for multiple vehicles. It measures 7 1/4 inches from pin hole to pin hole, giving us a little bit of an extension as well. It's made out of sturdy steel construction with a corrosive resistant black powder coat finish, so it's going to stand up to the elements.

It's got a 300 pound weight capacity. The pin and clips are not included, so you'll need to pick some up here at etrailer.com. We're using a 5/8ths pin and clip for the adapter end, part number PC3 and for our receiver end, we're using a PC2, which is a 1/2 inch pin and clip. Now it's extraordinarily easy installation. We've got our adapter plugged into our 1 1/4 inch receiver and our accessory plugged into our 2 inch receiver. That's going to complete our look at the Brophy Hitch Adapter, 1 1/4 inch to 2 inch trailer hitch receiver, part number HTAD.

I needed this product to adapt a standard Honda 1 1/4 inch hitch to a bike rack with a two inch mounting bar. Ordinarily, the hitch bar might have fit the standard Honda mount, but there was a blocking reinforcement bar under the Honda mount. This mount enables me to conform both the existing and bike rack mounts. Note: I carefully measured hole distances from ends of each mount to be sure it fit, which it does. I have no time to test the mount with the full rack load right now, but it seems to be within specified tolerances. 84470

Product was extremely well put together. Welds were all neat and uniform. Nothing was out of line. Finish was great. Heavy gauge steel: nothing cheap about the product. Excellent product. 185985

Doing great. Used it again this week to pull a fertilizer spreader. No problem at all. Paint even still looks brand new.

After one year this product continues to work and function as advertised. I use it for lite duty. It provides a platform to which I mount my bike rack via a lite weight trailer hitch. The fit and finish has held up well. Good product, does whats expected.

I purchased this along with a 1.25" hitch for my Prius so that I could use my hitched mount bike rack. Bridget at etrailer.com was very helpful by making sure that I got that right adapter and getting it to me quickly. I ordered this on a Thursday and got it on the next Monday, free shipping! We just traveled from Ohio to St Augustine Florida with our 2 bikes trouble free. 122094

This hitch adapter is just what the doctor ordered!! It met my needs in making it possible to "adapt" a rear cargo carrier to our 2007 Ford Explorer. This gives us extra capacity to transport wedding-related items from our home in Columbus, OH to Battle Creek, MI without having to rent a trailer or use two vehicles. Not only that, etrailer.com "performed a miracle" in getting this delivered in 2 days at no extra cost!! GREAT JOB in supplying what we needed, when we needed it, at a price we could afford. 119859

Great, strong quality, but I wish it wasn't so long. My deer hauling hitch tray now hangs a foot off/away from the back of my little 2 door hatchback and with only 4"-6" of ground clearance. Really looks like an odd set-up. I should have measured better before ordering; now will have to only shoot small deer to haul.:-) 8104

This product is very well built. It's also very heavy. However I bought it thinking I would use this so I could continue to use my 2" bike rack that I would routinely use behind my SUV. It will work but in the end the rack sticks out way too far and I did not get a comfortable feeling about the stress I would place on a class 2 hitch (1.25"). The product itself is great but if your intent is to use it on a bike rack my suggestion is to think it through. If your carrying a good deal of weight centered too far off the back of the car then you might loose stability. 176468

I am very pleased with my service from etrailer. After I ordered, I got a call from an etrailer rep who advised me that the two parts I ordered would not work together, and she had a ready (and cheaper!) suggestion of an alternative part that made the whole order workable. My order came very fast, even though I didn't use the fastest shipping method. 751409

I recently ordered several products from the website. As one who does regularly order online-- I want to say that the whole process was EXCELLENT. The access to information and videos about the product is outstanding. All questions you might have can easily be answered at each site. The products arrived and were as presented. I recommend etrailer for all related needs. 739553

The manufacturer does not include a pin and clip with this product. This allows you to use whichever style pin and clip you would like. A standard pin and clip like part # F-4
Curt Class I and II Pin and Clip - 1/2" Diameter

is an option, but you could also use a locking hitch pin like part # e98879

Overall fit well into existing hitch. However, with the added rack on the car and the extended distance from the rear, the rack sometimes scrapes going out steep driveways. Would not be a problem with a higher ground clearance car. 619667

Ask the Experts about this Brophy Hitch Adapters

  • Can a 1-1/4 - 2 Adapter be Used to Safely Haul a Cargo Carrier with a 2015 Toyota Corolla
The concept of a hitch adapter like the Brophy # HTAD is a good idea in theory but the problem with using one of those with a 1-1/4" hitch, like part # C11265 or # 24913 for your 2015 Toyota Corolla, is that it will reduce the weight capacity of your trailer hitch by 50%. Since those trailer hitches have a tongue weight rating of 200 lbs this means that the tongue weight will be reduced to 100 lbs. If you were to use all of this for the 24x60 Curt Cargo Carrier # C18153 you would only...

  • Can an Adapter be Used to Carry a 2 Bike Rack in 1-1/4 Receiver on a Mazda CX-5
I do have a solution for you to carry both of your bikes with your Mazda CX-5 but unfortunately an adapter like part # HTAD isn't the way that I recommend going. Not only does it cut the weight rating of your trailer hitch in half, it will also cause your bike rack to have more movement during travel. Since we don't carry Allen bike racks we don't have an adapter so instead I recommend changing out your bike rack for something like the Yakima HoldUp # Y02445 which fits a 1-1/4" receiver...

  • Can Bike Rack for 2 inch Hitch be Used in Draw Tite Class I Hitch # 24949
The issue with hitch adapters is that they cut the capacity of the hitch they are installed in by 50 percent and add quite a bit of movement. They really aren't an ideal solution but the part # HTAD will work in a Class I hitch like the # 24949. You should note too that the weight of this adapter is 7 bls. So if you add up the weight of your bikes and the rack plus the adapter you are at 101 lbs which would be 1 lb over the reduced capacity of the hitch at 100 lbs. Your best solution...

  • What is the Best Extender for a Draw-Tite Hitch Installed on a 2017 Ford Fiesta ST?
The Brophy Hitch Adapter, part # HTAD, is 7-1/4" long and adapts a 2" attachment to fit into a 1-1/4" reciever that will give a bit of extra length to your bike rack and additionally get you further away from the fascia when you install your bike rack. When you use any hitch adapter, your tongue weight (TW), or the downward force that your reciever can support, is cut by 50%. For example, Draw-Tite's Sportframe Trailer Hitch, part # 24961, has a tongue weight of 200lbs. With an...

  • Recommended Hitch Extender for Class I 1-1/4 Inch Hitch and 2 Inch Bike Rack
The Draw-Tite # 24857 for your 2008 BMW is only rated for Class I. This means the only options to have your bike rack fit are the # HTAD or the # HT5R that are compatible with Class I hitches. You will limit the 200 lb tongue weight capacity of your hitch to 100 lbs because the adapter will reduce the hitch's tongue weight by 50%. That new 100 lb capacity will need to include the weight of your bike carrier as well as the loaded bikes. I also recommend using a hitch lock like # 1472DAT...
