Video Transcript for Brophy Hitch Adapters HTAD Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're taking a look at the inch and a quarter to two inch hitch adapter. This receiver allows you to convert any inch and a quarter class one and class two receiver to a two inch receiver. That way you can easily haul your two inch hitch accessories even though you have an inch and a quarter hitch on your vehicle. It is made from a durable steel construction and features a black powder coated finish to resist rust and corrosion. The inch and a quarter shank on the unit is solid steel for a very strong durable design and the receiver right here measures two inches by two inches. And this does feature a capacity of 300 pounds when it comes to the tongue weight.

A few measurements I want to mention for you real quick. I took a measurement from the center of this pin hole to the center of this pin hole and got a measurement of 7 and 1/4 inches. From very front to very back measures 11 inches. From the center of this pin hole to the back of the shank measures and inch and half. Now, in order for your accessory to work with this unit, you need to make sure that the shank of your accessory is three and 3/8 of an inch or shorter. And that's because that's the amount of clearance or that's the amount of room we have inside this receiver slot.

So, from the back of this unit to the center of that hitch pin hole internally we have three and 3/8 of an inch, so again, your hitch accessory like a bike rack or a cargo carrier, cannot be more than three and 3/8 inches long from the center of the hitch pin hole on your accessory to the end or to the back of the shank, which is the part that slides into the hitch. Now, if it's longer than three and 3/8 inches, it will not work with this adapter, so please keep that in mind. Your pins and clips or pins and locks are not included. This pin hole right here will accept a standard 5/8 inch diameter pin. If you're in need of one, you can find it at Etrailer.com with part number PC3 that part includes a 5/8 inch diameter pin and a clip. This one back here will accept a 1/2 diameter pin and you can find that on our website with part number PC2 and that part number includes a 1/2 inch diameter pin and it also comes with a clip.

Again, durable, steel construction. Black powder coated finishing. Product is made in the USA. Now, please note, this is not designed for towing, so it's designed for use with bike racks and cargo carriers. That information is printed right here on the sticker on top of the product and the tongue weight capacity of your hitch will be reduced by 50% when using an adapter. That's gonna do it for today's look at the inch and a quarter to two inch hitch adapter..

Seems like a decent extender/adapter for my 1 1/4" to 2" hitch needs. 93416

After one year this product continues to work and function as advertised. I use it for lite duty. It provides a platform to which I mount my bike rack via a lite weight trailer hitch. The fit and finish has held up well. Good product, does whats expected.

Product was extremely well put together. Welds were all neat and uniform. Nothing was out of line. Finish was great. Heavy gauge steel: nothing cheap about the product. Excellent product. 185985

Doing great. Used it again this week to pull a fertilizer spreader. No problem at all. Paint even still looks brand new.

Very heavy duty. Will use it with a bike rack I had for another vehicle that had a 2" receiver. 98904

I want to adapt my 11/4 hitch to 2 for a Hollywood platform bike rack. However, the hitch adapter I got locally had some play in it. Do you have any movement with your platform bike rack with your adapter? The movement I had was where the adapter slid into the hitch, not with the bike rack.

Nancy, the adapter has very little movement in my Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver. It fits good with the bike rack

Product looks good quality. Took an hour to put in. Recommend two man job but jack stands work great. Before removing old bolts used WD 40 to soak them. Tap set would have worked great but muscle works as well on corroded holes. Did not have to jack vehicle. Did in car port. Liked they gave torque specs. Am firm believer in torquing bolts to spec. Received product a day earlier than promised. Liked box was the size of small bike box. Using it initially for 4 bike carrier and can not wait to try it out. Must purchase hitch lock for this vehicle since carrier was used on Jeep. all in all I found everything clear and seller caring of service. Very happy. 405871

Great product at a great price. Installation was easy and took less than an hour even including the time to jack up the car and set jack stands to get room to work. Note that you do not HAVE to remove and cut the heat shield if you don't want to; however, the hitch can rub against the shield when it is loaded (with a bike rack in my case) and make a minor squeaking noise. Don't forget to get a stabilizer/anti-wobble/tightener if you're using a bike rack or similar carrier. Depending on your hitch, rack, or adapter there can be a lot of play in it when hitting bumps in the road causing the bike and rack to move around a lot. 499856

Description was perfect on website. I spent hours running around to Home Depot, Menards, Walmart, Ace and all I could find was a hitch adaptor with a hole 3 and 1/4 when I needed 3 and 3/8. I had no idea that there would be a company that was on the internet that sold specialized adaptors. This was handy because the original bike rack I was trying to attach isn't made anymore. Also, the bike rack manufacturer apparently didn't want to have its 2 inch opening reduced to 1 and a 1/4 because of the weight limits for the rack. Your site explains that the weight for the rack should be adjusted for this change, so all is good. 53692

I can't believe how much this thing wobbles inside of my hitch, and how much my accessory wobbles inside of it. Two wobbles don't cancel it and I get wobble-wobble. I have yet to use my accessory because that just won't work out. I'm trying to use the Rhino T-Loader so that I can load a kayak on my roof. Paint also chipped off so easily from playing around with installation; I didn't even USE the accessory yet. For the cost of this chunk of metal, I'd have hoped for better fitment. Most anti-rattle devices only work for securing the accessory-to-hitch end. I'm not quite sure if I can stabilize both ends... 229877

Product was of excelent quality and exactly as described. The good dimensional infomation on eTrailer was most helpful in determining whether this product would work for me. Because of the excellent engineering info on eTrailer, I was able to determine the loading that I will able to carry and I learned a lot about the different class hitches and their ratings which was most helpful. Product arrived very quickly. I am using this product with a bike rack on my 1-1/4" car hitch. Great website and great service. What could be better. I would buy here again. Thanks eTrailer!! 29471

This product is very well built. It's also very heavy. However I bought it thinking I would use this so I could continue to use my 2" bike rack that I would routinely use behind my SUV. It will work but in the end the rack sticks out way too far and I did not get a comfortable feeling about the stress I would place on a class 2 hitch (1.25"). The product itself is great but if your intent is to use it on a bike rack my suggestion is to think it through. If your carrying a good deal of weight centered too far off the back of the car then you might loose stability. 176468

by:

Unfortunately I had to return the product because the 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" shaft was not long enough for me to match or mate its pin hole with the pin hole on the hitch. The 2" x 2" portion would hit the bottom of my rear bumper which prevented the 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" shaft from being inserted all the way into the hitch. It would have worked if the pin hole on the 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" shaft could have been inserted about 1/2" more. Looks like I will have to purchase a brand new bike rack since I will not be able to use the 2" x 2" that I now own. 159091

I needed this product to adapt a standard Honda 1 1/4 inch hitch to a bike rack with a two inch mounting bar. Ordinarily, the hitch bar might have fit the standard Honda mount, but there was a blocking reinforcement bar under the Honda mount. This mount enables me to conform both the existing and bike rack mounts. Note: I carefully measured hole distances from ends of each mount to be sure it fit, which it does. I have no time to test the mount with the full rack load right now, but it seems to be within specified tolerances. 84470

I have a 2004 Toyota Corolla. Shipment was fast even with the holiday. Parts and bolts all securely packed. I also ordered the 1.25 to 2" adapter. Installing: I couldn't get the bolts to catch to screw in so I tapped the weld nuts and that did the trick. Local stores have the single 12-1.25 so I didn't have to buy an entire tap and die set. After that the installation was pretty straight forward. I wish I would have thought to investigate a hitch years ago versus carrying the bikes on a trunk carrier. 403916

This hitch adapter is just what the doctor ordered!! It met my needs in making it possible to "adapt" a rear cargo carrier to our 2007 Ford Explorer. This gives us extra capacity to transport wedding-related items from our home in Columbus, OH to Battle Creek, MI without having to rent a trailer or use two vehicles. Not only that, etrailer.com "performed a miracle" in getting this delivered in 2 days at no extra cost!! GREAT JOB in supplying what we needed, when we needed it, at a price we could afford. 119859

Seems to be a solid product for our purposes. We already had a 2" receiver type bike carrier, but the wife's car can only handle a 1-1/4" hitch. This adapter saved us a good chunk of money on a new bike carrier. It slid in a little tight on the first go, but nothing a little grease couldn't solve. Highly recommended for this type duty. Oh yeah, etrailer.com had what we needed in stock (hitch for a 2010 Malibu LTZ & this adapter) and shipped immediately. Their tracking software was slick, best I've seen. 35463

I am very pleased with the Hitch Adapter that I just received from etrailer.com. It is exactly as pictured online and well made. I have already installed it on my car. Until I went on your website I was not even aware that this item existed. It solved a problem for me to be able add an accessory to my car hitch that I needed. I also appreciate the timely manner that it was delivered. 69735

However it was etrailers customer service that really made the online site win me as a loyal customer.I need this delivered in 2 days for a upcoming trip and despite a late in the day order their Team was able to get it shipped so I could receive it in 2 business days! They were reachable by phone and asisted professionally. Hats off to etrailers! 41751

I purchased this along with a 1.25" hitch for my Prius so that I could use my hitched mount bike rack. Bridget at etrailer.com was very helpful by making sure that I got that right adapter and getting it to me quickly. I ordered this on a Thursday and got it on the next Monday, free shipping! We just traveled from Ohio to St Augustine Florida with our 2 bikes trouble free. 122094

The HTAD Hitch Adapter was purchased to accommodate my 2" bike rack in the 1 1/4" hitch receiver on my new car, dissolving my initial dismay at the size of the freshly-installed hitch. The car salesman knew exactly how to solve the problem and texted your website with this product to me right away. It is well-made and beefy enough for the job. Need met. Happy me. 494853

Arrived quickly. Fit perfectly. Very STURDY piece. The pin and clip were easy to use. This adapter should enable me to use my 2 inch diameter bike rack (which had plenty of life left in it) on the 1 1/4 inch Class I hitch that came with our new car. The seller kept me apprised of the progress of my order and delivery details. Exemplary transaction all around. 47436

- HTAD

by:

I ordered this adapter to allow the use of a bike rack I used on a previous vehicle with a 2" receiver on the new 1 1/4" hitch I was putting on my car. It worked as advertised. Only downside is that the rack sticks out about 6" farther than with no adapter. Not a huge deal, but I would prefer not to have to use an adapter. 224401

- HTAD

by:

WARNING: Does not fit a standard 1-1/4 hitch reciever... at least not without grinding the paint off. It appears the manufacturer cast it to the correct size, then painted it which added just enough so it will not fit. Pulling out the grinder this weekend to resolve the problem. Otherwise seems to be of sturdy construction. 23811

The adapter arrived on time and worked great. I have to compliment eTrailer's customer service for going above and beyond. I needed an anti-rattle clip for my bike rack. It wasn't available in the 1.25 size, but they added it to their inventory amazingly quickly: http://www.etrailer.com/p-RM-061-125.html Good job! 154076

Great, strong quality, but I wish it wasn't so long. My deer hauling hitch tray now hangs a foot off/away from the back of my little 2 door hatchback and with only 4"-6" of ground clearance. Really looks like an odd set-up. I should have measured better before ordering; now will have to only shoot small deer to haul.:-) 8104

Everything was delivered as pictured, service was fast and received in 5 days. This is going to be used for a bike carrier. Bike Carriers are more common in the 2", class IV (4) size that the Class III size of 1:1/4. I would use e-trailer again without question. Thanks for ordering so simple. 18958

Excellent quality. Use the the product with limitations is clearly spelled out. Order was processed promptly and delivered without delay. The only surprise is that it didn't come with the retention pin to hold it into the receiver. Not a big problem, I can pick one up at the local hardware store. 546897

Januita was most helpful. I found exactly what I was looking for. Price was competitive and so I ordered trhe trailer hitch. It arrived in good shape. But the packaging needs to be done better, since it poked a hole in the cardboard carton. Its exactly as pictured. I must have overlooked that I will need to order a pin for it. Etrailer provides very good updates on the shipping status -- great job there. 98576

I was worried about the welding workmanship of the hitch as through my search for the right one I found a few people complaining about how badly welded some of them were made. I put my faith into etrailer and I was not disappointed. It came just as advertised and very well made. 529627

The adapter seems to be made with great quality. I would rather review the company. Awesome company, Pat C especially, was great to deal with. I am the one that made the mistake by ordering the wrong size and they bent over backwards to get me the correct part. 372634

Bright for a 1 1/4 hitch on my Fiesta to put my 2 inch bike rack on the car. Solid constructions works as advertised. But.... The adapter does not fit tight in the hitch so the bike rack shakes a bit. I am looking for a locking, anti-rattle solution for it. 11048

The adapter fit perfectly with the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" which I also purchased from etrailer. There was no need to scrape paint or grind metal to make it fit.The customer service from etrailer was excellent. 59468

Outstanding service and prompt delivery. I installed the Draw-Tite hitch and hitch adapter with ease. The instructions were straight forward and detailed. The hitch is installed on a Prius, and i can now use my cargo carrier to haul around my son's wheelchair. 132008

This is a perfect fit. I thought I had wasted money on my class 1 hitch since none of the 2 inch adapters would fit. But this adapter saved me it works with class 1 and 2 hitches. From my research it is the only one available. Many thanks to etrailer. 567238

For the 2003 Accord, I would have chosen the shorter (51/2 in) model if there is such a model. This one is too long for my application. Also the appropriate hardware should be included with this price. IE: nut/bolt/washers to secure to trailer hitch. 315438

- HTAD

by:

It scared me at first, I thought the size was wrong because I didn't give it a good shove when I put it on my hitch. This adapter does fit on a class I 1 1/4" hitch as long as you understand the load limit is still for a 1 1/4" hitch, NOT a 2" load. 229080

I'm using this hitch adaptor for transporting our canoe with our Prius. My main concern was the fit with the carrier. It fit like a charm. Also, the finish and welds are clean and well executed which makes it easy to attach our canoe loader. 564039

The Prius etrailer hitch had burs or this was made too big since it was almost impossible to insert until I rounded the start of the hitch. I believe this part wasn't the issue. Prompt delivery and very helpful when ordering. 162198

etrailer has some of the greatest customer service I have experienced in a long time , I ordered several things to outfit my toad and from start to finish they were a class company to work with . New customer for life ! 512029

The hole in the hitch adapter was not centered and I had to drill out the hole in the trailer hitch (about 1/16th) to get the pin inserted. It took about an hour to get right. I'm not very happy with your QA department. 43456

- HTAD

by:

Fit my new Prius hitch perfectly. Only concern in using one of these adapters is to not overload. I'm pretty confident the whole setup will work fine for the hitch mounted bike rack we already have. No worries. 559136

Comments

Just be aware that using this adapter will lower the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by half. The tongue weight on a Class I hitch used on your Prius is 200 lbs, so using the adapter will lower that to 100 lbs. This will mean that the weight of the bike rack and the bikes carried upon it cannot exceed 100 lbs.

  • Bike Rack for a 2018 Subaru Outback with Factory/OEM Hitch and Hitch Expander
  • The bumper isn't the actual issue that Subaru factory hitches have. It can cause a similar-looking issue, however Subaru OEM/Factory hitches are far more shallow than normal 1-1/4 inch hitches, making it difficult to fit bike racks to them. To be perfectly honest, I recommend against using the 1-1/4 to 2 inch hitch expander, part # HTAD on your hitch, as the Subaru Factory hitch is a Class I hitch. Moving the distance of any non-trailer load can risk or cause damage to the hitch. Additionally,...

In your case 110 pounds will exceed 50 percent of the 200 pound capacity of any trailer hitch, like the hitch you referenced, # C11276, available for your 2012 Toyota Prius. I recommend the Thule Doubletrack Pro, # TH9054, which is compatible...

  • Recommended Hitch for 2007 Subaru Impreza Wagon with 2 Inch Bike Rack
  • Depending on the weight of your current bike rack and your bike will determine if using a 2 inch adapter will work or not. The hitch adapter will reduce the capacity of the hitch by 50 percent causing the tongue weight of the hitch to now be 100lbs. If the combination of weight for your bike and 2 inch rack is below this then a 2 inch adapter will work for you. I recommend the Draw-Tite hitch # 24710 over the others because of the price and you will not have to use a stabilization...

  • Recommendation for a Trailer Hitch for a 2015 Nissan Altima
  • I have a trailer hitch that will fit your 2015 Nissan Altima. I recommend the Draw-Tite Sport Frame Hitch # 24796. The Draw-Tite hitch is custom-fit for your Altima like the other brands hitches we carry, but the Draw-Tite hitch will not need the extra stabilization strap the other hitches require when using a non-tow-able accessory, like a bike rack. The Draw-Tite hitch is a Class I hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. Unfortunately, there are no 2 inch trailer hitches available...

  • Class II Ball Mount With 3-1/2 Inch To 5 Inch Drop For Ford Explorer
  • For a 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver on your Ford Explorer, we have two ball mounts that fall within the 3-1/2 to 5 inch drop range. The first one is the Draw-Tite Class II Ball Mount, part # 36078. This ball mount has a 4-3/4 inch drop and measures 7-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball mount hole. It has a tongue weight rating of 300 pounds and a towing weight capacity of 3500 pounds. The pin and clip are included with this ball mount. The second ball...

  • Is The Hidden Hitch Adapter # 80303 The Shortest 1-1/4 to 2 Inch Hitch Adapter Available
  • The Hidden Hitch 1-1/4 Inch to 2 Inch Hitch Adapter, part # 80303, is our shortest adapter, but can only be used with a Class II receiver. If you have a Class I receiver, you will need part # HTAD. Part # 80303 will stick out about 1-1/4 inch less, than # HTAD. You can check the label on your hitch or send us the hitch number to find out if it is Class I or Class II. I am including a link to a FAQ page that will help describe the different classes of trailer hitches. Please note,...

  • Recommended Remedy for Trailer Hitch Receiver That Scrapes on the Ground
  • A smaller 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch on your 2008 Toyota Sienna will have a slightly greater height above ground than a 2-inch Class III type. For example, when we installed hitch # 36513 on a 2007 Sienna we found that the top of the receiver tube was 11-inches above ground. When we installed 2-inch Class III hitch # C13105 the top of the tube was 10-1/4-inches above ground. Please refer to the linked videos if you like. Yes, you gain a bit of clearance with a smaller Class II hitch but...

  • Is it Safe to Use a Trailer Hitch Adapter # HTAD on a Class I Trailer Hitch on a 2010 Kia Soul
  • It really depends on what you want to use the hitch for if you need an adapter. The trouble is that using an adapter like # HTAD or another adapter will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. The hitches for your 2010 Kia Soul are all class I hitches with a tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds. Using an adapter will cut that down to 100 pounds. If you are wanting to use a bike rack or cargo carrier, you will be limited to carrying just 2 bikes and the combined...

  • Trailer Hitch Ball Shank Size and Use of Hitch Adaptrers on a 2010 Toyota Prius
  • Class 1 receiver hitches use a 3/4 inch ball shank size. I would recommend item # 19256, for a 1-7/8 inch ball for your hitch or the item # 19258, 2 inch ball. 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch Trailer Hitch adapters like the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch Trailer Hitch Receiver, item # HTAD, are not to be used for towing because the use of an adapter significantly reduces the tongue capacity of the trailer hitch and puts excess stress on the hitch if used for towing due to the extended length...

  • Adapter to Use 2 Inch Bike Rack in Factory 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch on 2015 Subaru Outback
  • You would have to use adapter # HTAD. But please note that the use of an adapter reduces the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. The combined weight of the rack and the bikes cannot exceed the reduced tongue weight. The other issue is that if the factory 1-1/4 inch hitch on your 2015 Subaru Outback is a Class I, you are limited to just 2 bikes because a Class I hitch cannot take the stress of additional bikes. It puts too much torque on the hitch, like using a...

  • Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Honda CR-V to Use 2 inch Hitch Bike Rack
  • We have the # HTAD which converts a 1-1/4 inch hitch to a 2 inch hitch but since these adapters cut the capacity of the hitch they are installed in by 50 percent and add some movement this isn't an ideal solution. Instead the customers best option would be a 2 inch hitch like the # 76128 which will work directly with the bike rack.

  • Recommended Flagpole Holder for 1-1/4 Trailer Hitch
  • Don't worry, I have a solution for you. The Camco Flagpole Holder will fit into shanks of 2 inches but what you can do is use an adapter to reduce the opening to 1-1/4 to fit your 2001 Volkswagen Jetta hitch. This adapter # HTAD will be compatible with both a Class I and Class II trailer hitch. It will reduce the amount of weight that can be loaded into the receiver by 50 percent. This means if your tongue weight was 200lbs then you will be reduced to 100lbs, which should still work...

  • Determining Which Size Hitch to Install on 2000 Mercury Villager
  • There are both 2 inch trailer hitch receivers and 1-1/4 inch receivers available for your 2000 Mercury Villager. The receivers themselves on the hitch cannot be replaced or exchanged with another size. The receivers are welded to the hitch and are a part of its overall design. There are adapters available, such as the Brophy # HTAD, that can convert a 1-1/4 inch receiver to a 2 inch opening. The potential issue though is that using an adapter like this reduces the trailer hitch capacity...

  • Availability of 2 Inch Receiver Hitch for 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS
  • There are no 2 inch hitches available for a 2009 Toyota Matrix, however we do have a solution for you. We have 1-1/4 inch hitches for your Matrix and a nice adapter for making your 2 inch bike rack work with 1-1/4 inch receivers. First you will need a hitch. The Draw-Tite, part # 24812, has a high customer rating and would work just fine for a bike rack and includes a pin and clip. We even have a video of one of these hitches being installed on a 2009 Matrix, I have added a link to it. Since...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2004 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • The only available trailer hitches for your 2004 Subaru Outback Wagon all have 1-1/4 inch receiver openings. This is simply because the vehicle's towing and tongue weight capacities are lower than what a higher class trailer hitch (and larger 2 inch receiver opening) will provide. Trailer hitch manufacturers do this to prevent vehicles with lower capacities from being overloaded with a higher rated hitch. If you do not have the Sport model, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class II Frame Receiver...

  • Distance from Center of Hitch Pin Hole to Back of 2 Inch Portion of Hitch Adapter # HTAD
  • You are correct. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole on the Adapter # HTAD, to the 2 inch to 1-1/4 inch transition point is 3-3/8 inches. On your bike rack, it the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to end of the shank is 3-1/8 inches, you will have 1/2 inch to spare and the bike rack will fit. I have included a link to a video review of this adapter below. I must also mention that the use of this adapter will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer...

  • Can a 2 Inch Cargo Carrier be Used on a 2014 Mazda 6
  • All of the trailer hitches for the 2014 Mazda 6 are Class I trailer hitches with 1-1/4 inch receivers. The only way to use a 2 inch cargo carrier would be to use an adapter # HTAD. The problem with using an adapter is that it reduces the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent from 200 to just 100 pounds. This means the combined weight of the carrier and cargo cannot exceed 100 pounds. A better solution is to install a trailer hitch, # 24908, and then use a Class I...

The stop will prevent use of an adapter meant for the higher weight rated Class II receiver. The Brophy Hitch Adapter we offer, part # HTAD is compatible with Class I receivers and would work with the # 24880. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole in the shank to the end of the shank is 1-1/2 inches. Keep...
