Video Transcript for Brophy Hitch Adapter Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Brophy Hitch Adapter, 1 1/4 to 2 inch trailer hitch receiver, part number HTAD. The Brophy Hitch Adapter is going to easily convert your class II, 1 1/4 inch receiver to a 2 inch receiver, allowing you to use 2 inch accessories. Now we're using our cargo carrier with our hitch adapter here today, but this would also be great for bike racks or any other 2 inch accessory. Keep in mind, this is going to cut your tongue weight capacity in half and it's not recommended for use with towing. This is a much more economical solution that having to have two bike racks or two cargo carriers for multiple vehicles. It measures 7 1/4 inches from pin hole to pin hole, giving us a little bit of an extension as well. It's made out of sturdy steel construction with a corrosive resistant black powder coat finish, so it's going to stand up to the elements.

It's got a 300 pound weight capacity. The pin and clips are not included, so you'll need to pick some up here at etrailer.com. We're using a 5/8ths pin and clip for the adapter end, part number PC3 and for our receiver end, we're using a PC2, which is a 1/2 inch pin and clip. Now it's extraordinarily easy installation. We've got our adapter plugged into our 1 1/4 inch receiver and our accessory plugged into our 2 inch receiver. That's going to complete our look at the Brophy Hitch Adapter, 1 1/4 inch to 2 inch trailer hitch receiver, part number HTAD.

I needed this product to adapt a standard Honda 1 1/4 inch hitch to a bike rack with a two inch mounting bar. Ordinarily, the hitch bar might have fit the standard Honda mount, but there was a blocking reinforcement bar under the Honda mount. This mount enables me to conform both the existing and bike rack mounts. Note: I carefully measured hole distances from ends of each mount to be sure it fit, which it does. I have no time to test the mount with the full rack load right now, but it seems to be within specified tolerances. 84470

Product was extremely well put together. Welds were all neat and uniform. Nothing was out of line. Finish was great. Heavy gauge steel: nothing cheap about the product. Excellent product. 185985

Doing great. Used it again this week to pull a fertilizer spreader. No problem at all. Paint even still looks brand new.

After one year this product continues to work and function as advertised. I use it for lite duty. It provides a platform to which I mount my bike rack via a lite weight trailer hitch. The fit and finish has held up well. Good product, does whats expected.

I purchased this along with a 1.25" hitch for my Prius so that I could use my hitched mount bike rack. Bridget at etrailer.com was very helpful by making sure that I got that right adapter and getting it to me quickly. I ordered this on a Thursday and got it on the next Monday, free shipping! We just traveled from Ohio to St Augustine Florida with our 2 bikes trouble free. 122094

This hitch adapter is just what the doctor ordered!! It met my needs in making it possible to "adapt" a rear cargo carrier to our 2007 Ford Explorer. This gives us extra capacity to transport wedding-related items from our home in Columbus, OH to Battle Creek, MI without having to rent a trailer or use two vehicles. Not only that, etrailer.com "performed a miracle" in getting this delivered in 2 days at no extra cost!! GREAT JOB in supplying what we needed, when we needed it, at a price we could afford. 119859

Great, strong quality, but I wish it wasn't so long. My deer hauling hitch tray now hangs a foot off/away from the back of my little 2 door hatchback and with only 4"-6" of ground clearance. Really looks like an odd set-up. I should have measured better before ordering; now will have to only shoot small deer to haul.:-) 8104

This product is very well built. It's also very heavy. However I bought it thinking I would use this so I could continue to use my 2" bike rack that I would routinely use behind my SUV. It will work but in the end the rack sticks out way too far and I did not get a comfortable feeling about the stress I would place on a class 2 hitch (1.25"). The product itself is great but if your intent is to use it on a bike rack my suggestion is to think it through. If your carrying a good deal of weight centered too far off the back of the car then you might loose stability. 176468

Overall fit well into existing hitch. However, with the added rack on the car and the extended distance from the rear, the rack sometimes scrapes going out steep driveways. Would not be a problem with a higher ground clearance car. 619667

This is a perfect fit. I thought I had wasted money on my class 1 hitch since none of the 2 inch adapters would fit. But this adapter saved me it works with class 1 and 2 hitches. From my research it is the only one available. Many thanks to etrailer. 567238

This extender fits easily and accepts our Thule bike rack. It would be great if it came with the pin you need. We got a locking pin, which is nice and easy to use. 559155

Fit my new Prius hitch perfectly. Only concern in using one of these adapters is to not overload. I'm pretty confident the whole setup will work fine for the hitch mounted bike rack we already have. No worries. 559136

Comments

Just be aware that using this adapter will lower the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by half. The tongue weight on a Class I hitch used on your Prius is 200 lbs, so using the adapter will lower that to 100 lbs. This will mean that the weight of the bike rack and the bikes carried upon it cannot exceed 100 lbs.

Excellent quality. Use the the product with limitations is clearly spelled out. Order was processed promptly and delivered without delay. Great product at a great price. Installation was easy and took less than an hour even including the time to jack up the car and set jack stands to get room to work. Note that you do not HAVE to remove and cut the heat shield if you don't want to; however, the hitch can rub against the shield when it is loaded (with a bike rack in my case) and make a minor squeaking noise. Don't forget to get a stabilizer/anti-wobble/tightener if you're using a bike rack or similar carrier. Depending on your hitch, rack, or adapter there can be a lot of play in it when hitting bumps in the road causing the bike and rack to move around a lot. 499856

Product came quickly, very well packed. The adapter worked perfectly with an anti wobble device to convert 1.25 to 2” for a bike rack. 498022

The HTAD Hitch Adapter was purchased to accommodate my 2" bike rack in the 1 1/4" hitch receiver on my new car, dissolving my initial dismay at the size of the freshly-installed hitch. The car salesman knew exactly how to solve the problem and texted your website with this product to me right away. It is well-made and beefy enough for the job. Need met. Happy me. 494853

Product looks good quality. Took an hour to put in. Recommend two man job but jack stands work great. Before removing old bolts used WD 40 to soak them. Tap set would have worked great but muscle works as well on corroded holes. Did not have to jack vehicle. Did in car port. Liked they gave torque specs. Am firm believer in torquing bolts to spec. Received product a day earlier than promised. Liked box was the size of small bike box. Using it initially for 4 bike carrier and can not wait to try it out. Must purchase hitch lock for this vehicle since carrier was used on Jeep. all in all I found everything clear and seller caring of service. Very happy. 405871

I have a 2004 Toyota Corolla. Shipment was fast even with the holiday. Parts and bolts all securely packed. I also ordered the 1.25 to 2" adapter. Installing: I couldn't get the bolts to catch to screw in so I tapped the weld nuts and that did the trick. Local stores have the single 12-1.25 so I didn't have to buy an entire tap and die set. After that the installation was pretty straight forward. I wish I would have thought to investigate a hitch years ago versus carrying the bikes on a trunk carrier. 403916

Do you have a question about this Hitch Adapter?

  • Recommended Hitch Adapter for Yakima Holdup Bike Rack and Cargo Carrier
  • The Replacement Aluminum Hitch Adapter Sleeve for Saris 1-1/4" Hitch Bike Racks # SA3032 is not the best option for you. There is not a shank adjustment sleeve like that for your Yakima Holdup. You would either want the 2 inch shank # 8880580 or the 1-1/4 inch shank # 8880581. An adapter sleeve just won't hold that particular rack well. • Can a 1-1/4 - 2 Adapter be Used to Safely Haul a Cargo Carrier with a 2015 Toyota Corolla
  • The concept of a hitch adapter like the Brophy # HTAD is a good idea in theory but the problem with using one of those with a 1-1/4" hitch, like part # C11265 or # 24913 for your 2015 Toyota Corolla, is that it will reduce the weight capacity of your trailer hitch by 50%. Since those trailer hitches have a tongue weight rating of 200 lbs this means that the tongue weight will be reduced to 100 lbs. If you were to use all of this for the 24x60 Curt Cargo Carrier # C18153 you would only...

There is not a 2 inch receiver available because the Ioniq is not designed to handle the weight capacity of a 2 inch receiver. I recommend Draw-Tite hitch part # 24963 because Draw-Tite hitches do not require the use of a stabilization strap when using a bike rack. If you have a bike rack or cargo carrier with a 2 inch shank it is possible to use a 1- 1/4 inch to 2 inch hitch adapter. A hitch adapter we carry...

  • Recommended Hitch Extender for Class I 1-1/4 Inch Hitch and 2 Inch Bike Rack
  • The Draw-Tite # 24857 for your 2008 BMW is only rated for Class I. This means the only options to have your bike rack fit are the # HTAD or the # HT5R that are compatible with Class I hitches. You will limit the 200 lb tongue weight capacity of your hitch to 100 lbs because the adapter will reduce the hitch's tongue weight by 50%. That new 100 lb capacity will need to include the weight of your bike carrier as well as the loaded bikes. I also recommend using a hitch lock like # 1472DAT...

  • Can Bike Rack for 2 inch Hitch be Used in Draw Tite Class I Hitch # 24949
  • The issue with hitch adapters is that they cut the capacity of the hitch they are installed in by 50 percent and add quite a bit of movement. They really aren't an ideal solution but the part # HTAD will work in a Class I hitch like the # 24949. You should note too that the weight of this adapter is 7 bls. So if you add up the weight of your bikes and the rack plus the adapter you are at 101 lbs which would be 1 lb over the reduced capacity of the hitch at 100 lbs. Your best solution...

  • How to Use Thule T2 Pro XT Bike Rack for 2 Receivers with 1-1/4 Receiver
  • In order to use your Thule T2 Pro XT Bike Rack # TH9034XT with the 1-1/4" receiver on your new Subaru Outback I recommend the Brophy Hitch Adapter # HTAD. This will provide you with the needed 2" receiver and you can use the Anti-Rattle Hitch Receiver Lock # 63232 to secure it to your vehicle and reduce rattle/movement at the connection. Please just keep in mind that using an adapter like this decreases the tongue weight capacity of your trailer hitch by 50 percent. Just be sure that...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2017 Ford Focus
  • All of the available trailer hitches for your 2017 Ford Focus Hatchback SE are Class I hitches with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. This is most likely because the vehicle itself simply does not have the capacity that a higher class trailer hitch (and larger receiver opening) will provide. For your vehicle, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11158. This is custom fit for your Ford Focus and I have attached the installation details for you to check out. I recommend the Curt...

  • Availability of 2 Inch Trailer Hitch for 2007 Subaru Forester
  • We do have a couple trailer hitches available that are confirmed to fit your 2007 Subaru Forester, however they are all Class II models that feature a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. There is not a 2 inch hitch receiver available for your vehicle. Trailer hitch manufacturers tend to design their hitches to closely match the capacity of the vehicles they are designed to fit on. Trailer hitches with larger 2 inch receiver openings will have higher weight capacities, which is likely why there...

  • Trailer Hitch Needed to Carry 2 Bikes with a 2006 Scion xB
  • You are correct that an adapter will need to be used to carry an accessory when the Draw-Tite Invisi-Hitch # 28501 is installed on your 2006 Scion xB . This is due to the vertical configuration of the hitch receiver. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11487 will have less clearance from where the hitch receiver is located, but since your bike rack will install directly into the hitch receiver you will not see as much play. Since the Curt warranty requires a support strap, like part...

  • RockyMount MonoRail 2 Platform Rack for 2009 Honda CR-V
  • A hitch adapter like the Brophy Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" # HTAD allows you to use the 2" shank on the RockyMounts MonoRail 2 # RKY10004 on the 1-1/4" on your 2009 Honda CR-V, but using a hitch adapter of any type reduces the tongue weight on your hitch by 50%. You'll need to check your owner's manual to confirm but you likely have a Class I hitch with a 200-lb tongue weight, so using an adapter will only allow you to carry 100-lbs total safely on the hitch. Since the RockyMounts MonoRail...

  • Can Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack be Used on a 2017 Subaru Impreza with a Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver
  • I'm afraid your husband is correct to be concerned. The trailer hitch receivers we carry for your Impreza, like the Draw-Tite # DT24959, are all Class I hitches and will need an expander to fit the Yakima HoldUp for 2 Inch Hitch Receivers # Y02443. Using an expander, like the Brophy # HTAD, will give you a 2 inch receiver opening but it will also reduce your hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50 percent. That puts your maximum tongue weight at no more than 100 pounds using the Draw-Tite...

  • Recommended Way To Transport a Lawn Mower with a 2001 Toyota Camry
  • We have cargo carriers that work with trailer hitch receivers from Class I to Class IV. However, your options will diminish with the lower your hitch is rated. The highest rated hitch we have for your 2001 Toyota Camry is a Class II like the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 36336 which has a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. The best cargo carrier we have for your vehicle and mower is the Rola Cargo Carrier part # 59507. The Rola Cargo Carrier is is rated for use with Class II receivers...

  • Fitting a Thule T2 Classic to a 1-1/4 inch Trailer Hitch Reciever
  • Smaller vehicles like 2017 Audi A3's have the smaller 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver. If you haven't purchased it yet, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sport Frame Reciever Hitch, part # 24930. This is a quick install, no drilling required model that takes less than an hour to install onto a vehicle and will allow you to use a range of racks available through our website. As for the rack itself, you have two options. You can use an adapter like the Brophy 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch Hitch Reciever,...

  • Trailer Hitch to Carry a Saris Hitch Mount Bike Rack with 2" Shank with a 2017 Subaru Legacy
  • We actually have a solution for your 2017 Subaru Legacy to carry your Saris bike rack without the use of an adapter! The Curt Trailer Hitch # C12298 that you referenced fits a 2010 - 2014 Subaru Legacy so it won't be compatible with your 2017 model. If you like the Curt look then you would want to go with the Curt # 13390 instead which is a fit for your newer model year and has a 2" receiver. Curt does require that the stabilizer strap # 18050 be used per their warranty so if you'd...
