Question:

Hi, I just bought an XC60 and was surprised and disappointed to discover it had a 1.25inch factory hitch, since I have a 2inch bike rack. I tried two different straight adapters, but they werent long enough. Its about 2-7/8inch from the hitch opening to the center of the hitch pin hole. Do you think this adapter is my best bet, or is there another straight adapter you recommend? Its a tray bike rack, which sticks out a fair amount, so the shorter the adapter the better. Thanks.

Hey Chris, based on what you described it sounds like you have a Class I hitch on your XC60 and the 2 inch hitch adapter you are trying to use is for Class II hitches only and because of that the adapter won't fit into the hitch. Class I hitches have a weld stop down in the tube that prevents Class II only accessories from being installed and and what it will seem like is that the hitch tube isn't deep enough to allow the accessory to get pinned to the hitch. Can I get you to look down into your hitch tube and see if you see something down in there that looks out of place and in the way?

For example we have the Brophy adapter part # HT5R which is compatible with Class I and Class II hitches.

All of that said your best option would be to install a 2 inch hitch on your XC60 if you are open to that or go with a bike rack that fits your current hitch size like the Hollywood Racks part # HR200Z. If you wanted to go with a new hitch I would need to know the year of the Volvo that you have.

Hi Jameson, it's a factory Class II hitch with 3,500 LB towing capacity. I just looked down the tube and there's nothing sticking out. It's 4.5" deep, and I was able to stick my ball mount in 4-3/8" (which is further than needed to align the holes). The issue with both adapters I tried is that the 1-1/4" portion isn't long enough. I need an adapter that is 3" long from the middle of the pin hole to the first point that's wider that 1.25". In the review video for the HT5R adapter you linked, it says it's 2.25" from the hole to the weld, so that wouldn't be long enough. However, the diagram for e93YR says it is 3".

Thanks, @JamesonC. After measuring again, it looks like e93YR won't fit after all, because there's only room for 1.5" of shaft behind the pin hole. e93YR has 2.25". Volvo really doesn't want people using anything other than their accessories with their hitches! Based on the diagram, HTAD looks like it will just fit.

@ChrisR Well if the # HTAD will fit I'd just go with that. It is annoying with OEM manufacturers "do their own thing" with hitches and they kind of make them hard to use like this.
