Needed Tow Bar and Accessories to Flat Tow 2007 Jeep Liberty

Question:

I have a 2007 Jeep liberty, that we intend to tow behind our motorhome. I would like to know all the parts I would need. Do I need a base Plate for the Jeep? What about tow bar, and braking. If it requires a base plate, can I install myself? I have been pulling trailers a long time, but never a Car with a tow bar. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks

In order to flat tow your Liberty, you will need to install a base plate kit. I would recommend the Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit, part # RM-521423-4. A base plate offers a safe and secure attachment point to the vehicle. This particular Roadmaster kit offers easily-removable drawbars. One they are removed, the bracketry is pretty much invisible. If you are mechanically inclined, you might be able to handle the installation, but it is fairly involved.

Typically, an RV would have a receiver hitch on the rear, so rather than a pintle mounted tow bar like the StowMaster you referenced, a receiver mounted tow bar like the Roadmaster Falcon 2, part # RM-520 would be a better choice for you. The Falcon 2 has many convenience features, like the storage latch that allows the bar to be folded flat up against the rear of the vehicle when not in use, plus the auto-locking and centering feature that makes hitching and removing the tow bar much easier.

Safety cables like # RM-643 or # RM-645 will also be needed. Which cables you would need is a matter of personal preference. Some prefer the coiled style, which will not drag on the ground and possibly get damaged, while other prefer the straight cables that can be wrapped around the tow bar arms.

Although there a quite a few available options for wiring your vehicle (see link), I prefer a bulb and socket kit, like the Roadmaster Kit, part # RM-155. A bulb and socket kit is very easy to install, only requiring that a 9/16 inch hole be drilled in the rear of each tail light assembly. The kit allows the tow lighting to remain completely independent of the wiring of the Liberty. The kit provides wiring to run to the front of the vehicle, but you will need an umbilical. If your RV has a 4 -pole flat connector, you would need to remove it and use part # BX8861. If your RV has a 7-way connector, use part # BX88254.

Just as with the lighting, there are many ways to go with a braking system. If you want a product that is easy to install and use, the Roadmaster Even Brake, part # RM-9400 would be a good choice. If you click on the provided link, you can see information about the additional available options.

According to my research, the Jeep Liberty with either manual or automatic transmission is capable of being flat towed without modification. Towing above 65 mph is not advised, and it is recommended that the towed vehicle be started periodically to prevent battery drain. I would strongly recommend you confirm the towing procedures by checking your owners manual or with Jeep.
