Marine-grade, free-backing, passenger-side brake won't engage in reverse, even if actuator is activated. Automotive-grade friction pads are long-lasting. Dacromet-coated backing plate is supremely rust resistant. Fits 13" to 15" wheels.

Features:

  • Marine-grade hydraulic drum brake assembly is great for boat trailers
    • Designed for use with surge-type trailer brake actuators
  • Free-backing design lets you back up without engaging the trailer brake, even if the actuator is activated
    • Fall-away brake shoe only anchors on drum when brakes are engaged as trailer is moving forward
  • Automotive-grade friction material is molded to brake shoes
    • Pads are fully bonded - not riveted - to shoes for long life and more braking torque
    • Less chance of cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lockup, thanks to tapered edge and circular grinding
  • Periodic manual adjustment required
    • Fine-tooth brake adjustment gear allows for a more precise setting
  • Dacromet coating on backing plate offers superior corrosion resistance
    • Ideal for use on a boat or snowmobile trailer
    • Durable enough for saltwater applications
  • Stainless steel springs are durable and rustproof
  • Aluminum hydraulic cylinder resists rust
  • Single plunger design
  • Adjuster plugs (included) cover access holes to keep dirt and grime out of the assembly and off of the shoes
  • Brake mounting bolts are included
    • Nuts and lock washers (BRKH10BS) sold separately
  • QAI and CSA certified

Specs:

  • Application: most standard hub-and-drum assemblies, including Dexter, Lippert (LCI), and AL-KO
  • Configuration: right hand (passenger's side)
  • Dimensions: 10" diameter x 2-1/4" wide
  • Mounting flange bolt pattern: 4 bolt
  • Wheel size: 13", 14", and 15"
  • Axle rating: 3,500 lbs
  • Limited 1-year warranty

Note: Because free-backing brakes are designed to eliminate nearly all friction between the brake shoes and the drum when you are driving in reverse, a trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle while you are backing up.

Free-Backing Brake Assembly

Free-backing brakes let your trailer move in reverse without the brakes being activated by your surge actuator. These brakes are needed if your actuator does not have a reverse lockout, which is a mechanism that ensures that the actuator does not activate when your rig moves in reverse.

This free-backing hydraulic brake assembly has a fall-away shoe, which provides full braking when your trailer is moving forward, but supplies only limited friction when the trailer is moving in reverse. During normal forward braking, the fall-away shoe expands to catch your brake drum. When driving in reverse, however, the fall-away shoe's extra spring will overcome the pressure from the brake cylinder. This keeps the leading edge from catching on the drum, so the shoe will not fully pivot into the drum. This exerts a smaller amount of friction, just enough to provide a minimal amount of braking when in reverse.

This trailer brake assembly acts as part of your trailer's hydraulic braking system. A hydraulic trailer brake actuator is required for this brake to function.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This brake assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This brake assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This brake has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on this brake assembly is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Replaced my left and right brake assemblies on my 2000 Jayco Eagle UDK 16, popup camper. No problem removing the 4 nuts I sprayed with penetrating oil the day before, or the hydraulic line. I used new mounting hardware BIK-00 and installed the new units without any issues. I did bleed the lines and cylinders, and the brakes really didn't need more then a few clicks to adjust, best the brakes have every worked since I owned the camper, I am the second owner. I also replaced the hitch coupler / master cylinder with a new unit from etrailer AT82543, Jayco used 4 bolts to secure it, super easy to change. Parts arrived when expected and in great condition! Thanks etrailer.com!

Stripping down a 16 year old 21 ft. salt water use trailer - from end to end. The folks @ etrailer were very knowledgeable, and helpful in my decision making. From placing the order, to tracking the order, to the way the items were packed for transit. Other distributors could learn from these people; in regards to customer service, following up, both office and warehouse. Unloaded the products last night, nothing short, all quality in regards to their products, with great pricing. The installation videos are a big bonus, and something I'll be taking advantage of, during the restoration. Will follow up with picture, (before and after) when I'm done

I cannot comment on it's performance, although I am sure that the brake assembly will work better than it's predecessor. Order the washer/nut kit as well, it is less than two dollars. One of my old ones actually broke and I had to put a good amount of heat on the other three to get them off. The adjustment screw was easy enough to move the brakes in as well. I will be ordering the left side brake assembly tomorrow.

by:

Ordered brake assembly, fast response & delivery time. One year later, parts are working great!
Highly recommend ordering from etrailer!

by:

Exact replacement easy to install

by:

Perfect fit and simple to install. Pre installed studs are a great idea however the 4 nuts for those studs should be included as well. Also there is no hole to plumb a break flusher into if your trailer has one. Couple minor things but I still am extremely happy with the purchase.

by:

Got the 4 bolt's, why not the washers and the nuts for the back plate ?. Would have saved me a lot of driving. Other than that Great product. Thanks

by:

Made my trailer like-new. Etrailer support was fantastic; user friendly and professional. I'll continue doing business here.

  • Replacement Brake Assemblies for Escort Boat Trailer
You need to measure the inside portion of your hub drum. You need the width and depth like in the picture I attached. I can almost guarantee that you have 10 inch assemblies based on the 4 bolt mounting pattern though. So for free backing assemblies you would want the part # AKFBBRK-35R-D for the right hand side and part # AKUBRK-35L-D for the left.

  • Width of 3,500 lb Hydraulic Trailer Brakes AKUBRK-35-D
I could not find where it said "2-1/4 inch drums" though what I can tell you is the width of the shoes is 2-1/4 inches on the 3,500 lb hydraulic brakes: - Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit - Uni-Servo - Dacromet - 10" - Left/Right Hand Assemblies # AKUBRK-35-D This kit includes the Right Hand # AKFBBRK-35R-D and Left Hand # AKFBBRK-35L-D brakes, and to install requires Mounting Hardware for 10" Brake Assemblies # BRKH10B.

  • Trailer Brake Actuator for Hydraulic Brakes on a Tandem Axle Trailer
The Demco Actuator # DM72VR is rated for trailers up to 7,000 pounds regardless of the number of axles. If your trailer is heavier use # DM8608601, rated for trailers up to 8,600 pounds. The # AKFBBRK-35R-D and # AKFBBRK-35L-D brakes you've selected are for 3,500 pounds axles with a 4 bolt brake flange. For a tandem axle brake line kit you can use # DM5428.

  • New Brake Assemblies, Hub/Drums, Brake Lines, and Bearing Buddy for Trailer with 3,500 lb Axle
For as trashed as those brake assemblies are I am impressed with how spotless that spindle is! Based on the bearing numbers you mentioned you have a #84 spindle and the hub part # AKHD-545-35-G-K is correct. Since this its galvanized it's a really great option as it will fight corrosion. The flexible brake line kits like the part # 18SI-BLKIT is what I would go with. They are just as durable as anything else and a lot easier to install. • Recommended Brake Actuator With Lock Out for 7000 LBS. Boat Trailer
The standard tongue weight on a trailer is approximately 10-15 percent of the GTW. On a boat trailer it generally stays at 10 percent because most of the weight of a boat is towards the back end of the trailer, reducing the need for more tongue weight. This is why all of our couplers have a tongue weight of 10 percent of the GTW. If you'd like to be more definite in your tongue weight, you can always use a scale like the Sherline Trailer Tongue Weight Scale # e99044. The Titan Zinc-Plated...

  • Trailer Brake Mounting Hole Pattern is Not the Same as Drum Bolt Pattern
The bolt pattern of the drum has nothing to do with the mounting pattern of a brake assembly. The drum bolt pattern is going to have to match the wheels you are using. The brake mounting pattern needs to match the flange that it bolts to. There are 2 common brake mounting hole patterns; a 5-hole and a 4-hole. The 5-hole version looks like # 4-44-1. The 4-hole looks like # 4-35. etrailer brake assembly # AKFBBRK-35R-D uses the 4-hole pattern. So if you look at your brake mounting flange...

Thank you for that info and I definitely recommend replacing your boat trailer's brakes and we have exactly what you need. Based on the Dexter 8-247 number you gave we know you have a 3,500 lb Dexter 10" Hub and Drum Assembly such as part # 84546UC3. For a hub and drum that size the best option is the Hydraulic Trailer Brake - Dacromet because they are designed for marine applications with their corrosion-resistant dacromet coating and mount to a 4-bolt mounting flange such as # 4-35....

We have just what you are looking for. The brake I recommend is part # AKFBBRK-35L-D. This is a 10-inch brake assembly that is 2-1/4 inches thick and has an aluminum wheel cylinder. This assembly is designed for 3,500-lb axles and will work with 13, 14, and 15-inch wheels and it has a 4-bolt brake flange mounting pattern. This assembly is for the left hand(driver side) of the trailer. The brake assembly for the right hand(passenger side) is part # AKFBBRK-35R-D.

If you are looking for hydraulic brake assemblies, I strongly recommend the 10 Inch Free-Backing Dacromet Brake Assemblies, # AKFBBRK-35L-D for the left hand and # AKFBBRK-35R-D for the right hand.
