Self-Adjusting Brakes Don't Require Routine Adjustment

Standard electric brake assemblies require manual adjustment of the brake shoes over time to provide longer-lasting and more efficient braking performance. With self-adjusting brakes, the brake shoes are always properly aligned, so there's no need to manually adjust the brakes after the initial adjustment. As a result, you get optimum performance without having to take the time to continually perform this type of maintenance.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

These brake assemblies meet the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. I would have to say that the self adjust drums were a nightmare! They actually wore completely out in less than 6 months with one assembly completely and literally exploding. They seemed to have been over adjusting themselves. They never really gave any real noticeable stopping power. I will never have another trailer with drum brakes. We had to have those brakes warrantied out and we upgraded to the disk brake conversion which is a night and day difference! We love the disk brakes that we received from etrailer!

I suspect that the brakes were not seated when they were installed which can cause the brakes to seem weak until they are worn in. This in turn may cause you to over brake with which wear out the brakes quicker. When installing new brakes, both manual and never adjust, you will want to drive the trailer out into an open area, like an empty parking lot. Get up to around 40 MPH and apply the manual override on your brake controller. Make sure the brake controller is set high enough where it will fully engage the trailer brakes. Do not hit the brake pedal during this time, as you want to slow down your vehicle and trailer with only the trailer brakes. You will most likely have to do this about 20 to 30 times to properly seat the brakes. When you feel like your brakes are properly seated, pull over and check for signs that youre done: a bit of smoke is normal and your brakes should be very hot. The brakes should read 350-400 degrees with a temperature gun If you do not see these signs then repeat until the brakes are properly seated.

These brake assemblies were an exact duplicate of the originals I was replacing. If you zoom on the pictures I took the two right side ratchet assemblies are knocked loose due to the shipping being dropped, no fault of the etrailer. The sturdy shipping box came in very handy for kneeling on while working on the brakes as you can see I’m working in the area with gravel all around the wheels. This is my second purchase from etrailer and both purchases have arrived quickly and worthy of their price.

It has taken one of the bothersome maintenance jobs from the check list I had to do to have my 5th wheel road ready.

I sent a question to Re: brake assemblies for my 1964 Airstream RV. I got a prompt response explaining how to measure the old brakes on the trailer to correctly size the brakes I needed. Finding the size allowed me to research the hub & bearing assemblies I also needed. I ordered them all with confidence they'd fit. I couldn’t locate any info on the instructions that came in the Boxes nor could I find this Info on the website. I looked in the FAQ’s area & also on the parts info page for the parts I bought. I like finding the Info myself, Usually after hours. I ended up having to call you guys. I talked to Sammie at Customer Service, She didn’t have the exact but did know where to get it. She sent me the Torque Chart with the Torque settings for the Hub and Wheel Type I have. I think that this Info Should be included in the box with the new Hubs and Lug Nuts, Plus easily found on the website. Your Videos and Tips are a Great Extra Plus for us DIY’s like me. Who knew lack of forward progress could be so satisfying.

After being pushed around by my new trailer, from a highly respected manufacturer, I sought help. First from a repair shop and then a friend with some experience working on trailer brakes.

When he pulled the first drum, we were both shocked. It was covered in bearing grease. Turns out the rear seals on all four wheels had been blown out and the drums were coated in grease along with the backing plates and brake shoes.

i ordered new self adjusting trailer brakes from etrailer, and the my buddy and I got dirty. Several cans of brake clean and scuffed knuckles later, My new trailer now stops like a new trailer.

I can't thank etrailer and my buddy enough.

After a year and a few thousand miles, my new trailer brakes just seem to be getting better. Thank for this solid product and, as always, great service.


So far so good. Worked the first time out which was an improvement since the old ones did not work at all. Buying the whole assembly made it easier and faster to replace rather than buying the individual parts.

Still works great. Having working brakes on a heavy TT is a must.

The products were great. The packaging was poor, one of the brake assemblies, was damaged, small piece of brake material was broken off. the shoes were knocked loose, had to reassemble complete kit. Installation went fine after that. Correct the packaging. I would recommend this product to anyone needing to replace there brakes.

I bought this item a year ago. etrailer was the only supplier that had the brakes with the automatic adjuster. As my trailer was originally equipped with this option, I wanted to replace it with an identical set-up. The original brakes were not worn but heavily rusted and did not provide the performance required.
The new brakes from e-trailer were reasonably priced, quick delivery, an exact match, and installation was just a few bolts and a couple of wires. My order was quickly processed and the customer service was great. My brakes automatically adjust and now stop my 10,000 lb trailer on a dime. I have owned them for a year with zero issues. Five stars all around. I would recommend this item to anyone looking for a great brake setup for a heavy trailer.

My brakes were not working right on my trailer. So I bought new trailer brake kits from etrailer.The kits came fast and I installed them The only think I did not like is the wires from the magnets on the brakes are very thin wire. I wish they would have used thicker wire with a heavier coating.

1 year later the brakes have worked well with no issues

Excellent replacement for standard non-adjusting brakes and actually easier to install since they adjust themselves! Have towed about 2,000 miles and no issues.


I replaced the hydraulic surge brakes on my trailer with the electric brakes and hardware. I couldn't be happier. They stop on a dime and they take the burden off of my tow vehicle. Excellent purchase. I'd buy them again in a heartbeat.

The parts arrived promptly and fit great, all that is left is the initial adjusting. It was a pleasure working with TomyLyn on the ordering process. Sorry I forgot to take Pics, I was so excited to get them installed and buttoned up.


Great product! Bolted right up. They work well. The only thing extra needed is the 1-1/4" stainless bolts to bolt them on.


The brake assembly came as described, it was easy to install, and operated without any problems. I would recommend this product to everyone that needs brake and magnetic replacement.


These are outstanding backing plates and brakes setups. I ordered four of these for my 1997 Sunnybrook fifth wheel. Everything is preassembled! All I had to do was adjust the brakes a little to get the new hubs over them and that was all. Five nuts to remove and replace. Great product!

The Drums, Bearings and Backing plates I installed from your company have worked GREAT! I have not had a single issue with their operation. I even accidentally ordered the incorrect seals, and that was handled perfectly! Thanks so much for carrying and supplying QUALITY parts and having excellent customer service!

So far so good. Went on easy. Only 3 stars because they were just thrown in a box without sufficiently packaging them. The brake shoes were all out of wack and disconnected. Had to reset everything


I replaced the (4) brakes on my 8 month old 5th wheel trailer due to leaking grease seals. While I was in there, I wanted to "upgrade" to self-adjusting brakes and this brake kit fit the bill splendidly. Installation was straightforward--simple and easy. Initial brake adjustment was easier with the new kit than adjusting the OEM brakes I was replacing (the adjusting stars line up with the adjuster holes in the backing plates on the new brakes--not so much on the OEM brakes). The self-adjusters work as they should--used to be I'd apply the trailer brakes only from time to time (in a parking lot or fuel station) to check on how the OEM brakes were working and whether or not it was time for a brake adjustment. I still check my trailer brakes in the same manner, however, I've not had to adjust the new shoes since the initial install...very convenient.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with my new brakes and the service from etrailer.

P.S. I've uploaded a set of "before & after" pictures... easy to tell the difference, eh? Have you checked your brakes lately?


Excellent service from etrailer, they had my parts to me in 1 day from the time of placing the order. The electric brake kit seem to be well made and fit nicely onto the Timbren 5200 lb axel assembly with the Dexter trailer hub and drum assembly. I have not ran these on the road as of yet but will give another review at that time.


Disappointed that the brakes didn’t come with new bolts. Seem to be of good quality and went on easy. Love the automatic adjusters.

Brakes have been working fine with no issues. Have recommended the same units to my friend.

Originally wanted to just repack wheel bearings, so I pulled a wheel to find out which Grease Seals to order. Found brake shoes worn a lot.
Because the price on a complete assembly was sooo reasonable, I ordered 4 assemblies plus seals.
Turns out the other three (original) brake assemblies had blown grease seals. What a mess! Not to mention my experience of poor to no braking power!
So glad I ordered new, complete brake assemblies. No mess, no fuss. Just pull old assembly, cut wires, replace new assembly, splice wires- Done!

BTW - one of the new assemblies had a crack in the shoe - probably from being banged in shipping. etrailer replaced it right away and I returned the cracked one.

I have attached a pic of one of the old assemblies w the blown grease seal so you can see how reasonable it is to just buy and replace the whole thing vs. all the clean up that you would need to do if you did just the shoes.


Brakes are easy to install and work as they should. Only held off 5 star review, as I have only had them on my fifth wheel for one trip.

Ordering was easy, shipping quick, the items as advertised and a good price. I do think you should up your game in the shipping department, as the box was damaged/partially open, and of one the brake units had loose parts. Fortunately none of the parts were missing and I managed to re-assemble the brake adjusting mechanism. I have not installed the items, weather related delays, but I do not expect any issues.

I would recommend your company to my fellow DYIs.

  • Troubleshooting Weak Trailer Brakes that Are Adjusted Properly and Have Good Magnets
    Is it possible there's grease in the drum which is causing the brakes to not lock up? If you blew out the inner grease seal or it was leaking at all this is a very likely cause.     It is not required to know the axle capacity when selecting the correct replacement barking assemblies for a trailer axle though it does help. If you want to try and determine this you can look for a sticker on the center of the beam or measure the diameter of the beam assuming it is indeed a round axle tube.     Since you measured the drums and found they are 10 inch that is your best indication what you need as replacement assemblies. For that the best solution is the self adjusting assemblies part # AKEBRK-35-SA which will fit and work great. The numbers you listed don't match anything I was able to find though.

    In order to choose the correct braking assemblies for a trailer you'll need to know the axle capacity. I have no way to look this up for anyone particular trailer but most will either be 3,500 lbs or 5,200-7,000 lbs. If you have 3,500 lbs axles use part # AKEBRK-35-SA. If you have 5,200-7,000 lbs axles then use part # AKEBRK-7-SA. The axle capacity is easiest to find on the axle tag. The above braking assemblies are sold in pairs only.
