Self-Adjusting Brakes Don't Require Routine Adjustment

Standard electric brake assemblies require manual adjustment of the brake shoes over time to provide longer-lasting and more efficient braking performance. With self-adjusting brakes, the brake shoes are always properly aligned, so there's no need to manually adjust the brakes after the initial adjustment. As a result, you get optimum performance without having to take the time to continually perform this type of maintenance.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

These brake assemblies meet the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. These brake assemblies underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on these brake assemblies is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. Today we're going to take a look at the 12-inch Electric Self-adjusting Trailer Brake Assembly Kit, includes the left-hand and right-hand side brake assemblies and they fit 5,200 pound to 7,000 pound axles. Electric brakes are easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. Basically they require only an electric brake controller which we do sell separately on our website. There's no actuate or hydraulic lines necessary. On the brake pads, they do use an automotive grade friction material. It's molded to the brake shoes and the pads are fully bonded so they're not riveted to the shoes.

It gives you a lot longer life, more braking torque. If you notice on the edges of these brakes they are tapered edges and then they do a circular grinding of the pad that gives you less chance of cracking and crumbling that could lead to mechanical lockup. This set happens to be self-adjusting brakes so they do not require the periodic manual adjustment like standard brakes. You can tell they're self-adjusting because if you look at this cable right here it goes around a pulley, attaches to the lever right down here which you'll automatically adjust it as needed. It does use a fine tooth brake adjustment gear so it allows for a more precise setting. There is no break-in period needed following your initial adjustment. If you notice on these backing plates, they are an E-coated backing plate, helps resist wear and corrosion.

They also include the adjuster plugs in the very bottom here. These are the holes that you'd adjust your brakes through, but they do put the rubber plugs in there and it helps keep any dirt and grime from getting into the assemblies and off of the shoes. This does include both the left-hand driver side brake assembly, the right-hand passenger side brake assembly, all the mounting hardware which is a 3/8 inch size mounting hardware which is total of 10 bolts, 10 lock washers and 10 nuts all included. This assembly does meet the QAI and CSA certifications. These are electric brakes so you'll notice the two wires that come out the back here, two black wires. They do need to be connected.

One goes to a good clean ground. The other goes to the brake feed for power. You can use either wire for either function. It doesn't matter which. The application on this again is for most standard hub and drum assemblies including Dexter, Lippard and Alco. The dimensions is 12 inches by 2 inches.

When they say that, what they're measuring the 12 inches would be the diameter so from this pad edge to this pad edge. The ruler on it is 12 inches. The 2 inches would be the width of the brake pad. There's your 2 inches. This is designed for a five-bolt brake mounting flange so your axle does have to have a brake mounting flange which is five bolts to install this on and it is designed for axles that are rated 5,200 pounds, 6,000 pounds and 7,000 pounds. The last thing I do want to mention is this is the left hand, this is the right hand. The way to tell that is when you get them new they'll have a sticker that will tell you that. By chance if the sticker wasn't on there, the easy way to tell is just look at the length of the pad on the shoe. This one goes from here to here. This one goes from here to here. The shorter pad, which is this one right here, is the primary shoe that faces the front of the trailer so that will tell you that this goes on this side which would be the driver's side or left-hand side. If you go to the right-hand side, same way. Just look at the length. Here's the shoe goes from here to here and over here goes from here to here. Again, this is the shorter shoe, the primary shoe, so it would go this direction. That will tell you that this is the right-hand passenger side assembly. Received brake assemblies three business days after placing the order as promised by Ms. Chrissy J....who provided the finest customer service I've EVER experienced. Ms. J should be commended for her positive, can-do attitude and commitment to this customer! She explained how to measure the brake assemblies so that I ordered the proper size. And then she promptly ordered the parts and explained when I should expect delivery. She also helped me order for grease seals for all four hubs. All the parts arrived when Ms. J told me they would arrive. And, it is such a time saver to replace the electric brake assembly rather than rebuild existing assemblies. This is my second purchase of brake assemblies and it's always easier to remove four bolts and use a butt connector to splice electric to new assembly than spend hours replacing shoes and associated hardware. These assemblies were a perfect match. Bolted right on and the materials they are made of seem to be comparable to the Dexter assemblies I removed. Only time will tell if they hold up. The pads on the dexter assemblies were coming loose from the shoes and curling at the edges. Hoping these will do better. I am glad I added these self adjusting brake kits. They seemed to have adjusted correctly, and from what I can tell, the brakes are working well. My 26 foot camper is old and pretty heavy at 5200 lbs dry weight. Seems to be braking evenly and cannot detect any pulling side to side or unevenness when I use the brakes. I am leery about giving 5 stars with only a year of use, but yeah, 5 stars at this point.

I thought I had the right product selected and called customer service but was quickly informed that I would need a different style for my trailer. Glad I called. So Disappointed!! This is a review of my order experience, not the product. I needed to replace the brake assemblies on my camper before we could go on vacation. I call to see how long it would take to receive and was told 2 days. I placed the order and received as told. I was about to be impressed until I opened the box. They not only sent the wrong brand, but also the wrong size. I called customer service and had to wait 45 minutes for someone answer. She agreed it was their mistake. I told her I only had two more days to get them on and still go on vacation. I asked for next day delivery. She was able to do that, but said it would ship that day and go 2nd day. The next day, the order had not shipped and the tracking number I was given doesn't even register on UPS. I don't when or if I will receive the correct product. I am replacing the brakes on our 2016 Forest River Shockwave Toyhauler. After removing the wheel drums to repack the bearings, I noticed splattered grease covering the entire brake system of each wheel. Most likely due to me over greasing the EZ lube axles. The brake assembles I ordered and received were exactly the same I was replacing which made the job very simple. I made the initial adjustments then took the trailer out for a test drive to break-in the shoes. They feel better than new. I couldn’t locate any info on the instructions that came in the Boxes nor could I find this Info on the website. I looked in the FAQ’s area & also on the parts info page for the parts I bought. I like finding the Info myself, Usually after hours. I ended up having to call you guys. I talked to Sammie at Customer Service, She didn’t have the exact but did know where to get it. She sent me the Torque Chart with the Torque settings for the Hub and Wheel Type I have. These are outstanding backing plates and brakes setups. I ordered four of these for my 1997 Sunnybrook fifth wheel. Everything is preassembled! All I had to do was adjust the brakes a little to get the new hubs over them and that was all. Five nuts to remove and replace. Great product! 382238

These brake backing plates are great and really cost about the same as buying shoes and springs separately...but this way they come pre-assembled. These come with new mounting bolts and nuts. The nuts DO NOT appear to be of good quality and I would advise against using them. (use your originals) Replacing all four backing plates on my trailer, I broke out the digital torque wrench to torque the 5 backing plate nuts/bolts to the recommended 50ft-lb. At less than 30 ft-lb of torque, I noticed they would not get any tighter, although I was backing up the bolt with a wrench. I removed the nut to find the treads had pulled thru the nut, not cross threaded as I hand tightened them initially, but the threads just gave up. Bolts still looked ok. I replaced with my originals and all is ok. Don't trust these supplied nuts without verifying torque with a torque wrench. If I was etrailer, I would remove them from the kit. 468170

I have ordered from etrailer.com on other occasions and for the most part what keeps me coming back in the pricing. They usually have the lowest price for the same original equipment. Be careful if you haven't heard that your product has shipped in a reasonable amount of time, even if their website says they have the item in stock. They will hold your order until they have all the parts to ship. I had not seen a shipped email for almost a week and when I called they said they would have it to ship in mid august, about a month after I ordered. I was told they had a similar item in stock ready to ship now if I wanted to change my order. I appreciated that and did change my order, however, I needed to know that information at the time they knew it because I had to change my vacation plans because I could not get the parts in time to take our 5th wheel. Brake assemblies were delivered fairly quickly, not totally pleased to find they were made in China. They were not packaged appropriately and had a couple of chips on lining. I didn't want to go through the hassle of returning them so I just put them on. I am going to give it a 2 star rating for quick delivery and price point for the product. I replaced the (4) brakes on my 8 month old 5th wheel trailer due to leaking grease seals. While I was in there, I wanted to "upgrade" to self-adjusting brakes and this brake kit fit the bill splendidly. Installation was straightforward--simple and easy. Initial brake adjustment was easier with the new kit than adjusting the OEM brakes I was replacing (the adjusting stars line up with the adjuster holes in the backing plates on the new brakes--not so much on the OEM brakes). The self-adjusters work as they should--used to be I'd apply the trailer brakes only from time to time (in a parking lot or fuel station) to check on how the OEM brakes were working and whether or not it was time for a brake adjustment. I still check my trailer brakes in the same manner, however, I've not had to adjust the new shoes since the initial install...very convenient. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my new brakes and the service from etrailer. P.S. I've uploaded a set of "before & after" pictures... easy to tell the difference, eh? Originally wanted to just repack wheel bearings, so I pulled a wheel to find out which Grease Seals to order. Found brake shoes worn a lot. Because the price on a complete assembly was sooo reasonable, I ordered 4 assemblies plus seals. Turns out the other three (original) brake assemblies had blown grease seals. What a mess! Not to mention my experience of poor to no braking power! So glad I ordered new, complete brake assemblies. No mess, no fuss. Just pull old assembly, cut wires, replace new assembly, splice wires- Done! BTW - one of the new assemblies had a crack in the shoe - probably from being banged in shipping. etrailer replaced it right away and I returned the cracked one. What GREAT service! I have attached a pic of one of the old assemblies w the blown grease seal so you can see how reasonable it is to just buy and replace the whole thing vs. all the clean up that you would need to do if you did just the shoes. 513017
