Replacement Brake Assemblies for Hubs Marked BD-655-17

Question:

I have a tandem 10k trailer with one axle of brakes Im wanting to replace the brake/backing plate assembly. The drum had BD-655-17 stamped on it. Would you be able to tell me which backing plate assembly I need to match the drum without having the part number? Trying to not have the trailer apart before parts are in hand. Thanks!

Hey Ronald, based on the part number you mentioned the correct brake assemblies would be the etrailer brake assemblies part # AKEBRK-7-SA which are a self adjusting set that are the correct capacity for the hub/drums that you have.

I ordered the above part number listed to replace my brakes. They fit the flange and inside my drum, but after 2 adjustments and driving it twice I am Un-able to get brakes to work. When I jack up trailer I can feel a slight resistance when they are applied (on setting 10 of 10) but can easy move tire with my hands. Any ideas on what my issues are? Worked alot better with my old set of brakes.

@Drew Did you try burnishing the brakes? Try going like 40 mph and use the override lever of the brake controller to slow the vehicle down to 20 mph. If you do that like 10-20 times normally that's enough to get them working well.

@JamesonC Yes did it many many times. The trailer does not slow the truck at all. Used manual lever on max likely 100 times. Do I need to change the drums out as well? I've checked voltage and all is good there. The only thing I can think is the spacing on my drum to manget isn't correct for these brakes.

@Drew Are you sure the assemblies are tight? I know you said you adjusted them but did you feel a light drag on the wheels as you turn them without brakes applying. Also did the drums ever have grease in them due to a blown grease seal?
