Video Transcript for Feature Breakdown: Replacement SpeedKnob and Wedge Assembly for Yakima Bike Racks

Today we're going to be taking a look at the replacement speed knob and wedge assembly for the Yakima bike racks, part number 8880508. The Yakima replacement speed knob is to be used with the Full Swing, Swing Daddy, Ridgeback and Full Tilt bike racks when their speed knobs are either damaged or the threads at the end are stripped out. It comes with the black knockout here which you're going to remove that and it has the control key to remove the lock core from your previous speed knob to replace it into this one. To get started we'll first remove our wedge piece here by unscrewing it and set it aside now we'll grab our damaged speed knob and start replacing it as well. Now we'll move on to our bike rack and have our Yakima Ridgeback here on our table and the issue with is the thread is stripped out in our wedge. We'll push that off to the side, remove our speed knob as well, now we'll get our new one and start installing it. First since this is a Ridgeback, we'll have to remove this top piece from the wedge. Take our allen tool, unscrew those two allen screws, move onto the one on the inside.

Now we can grab our new wedge and install this piece on top of it. What this piece actually does is it takes up the additional space on our Ridgeback so it'll fit properly in a two inch hitch. If you we're to convert this into an inch and a quarter you would remove this piece again. Finally, our second screw, one last turn to make sure it's nice and tight. Next we'll move onto our lock core switch out here. To remove this plastic cap, we'll take a small flat bladed screwdriver and just pop that out, very easy, and then we'll take our master key here put it into the core and it pulls out like so. Again, very easy.

To place it into our new lock, we'll push it in holding onto the end of the core and pull it out. Now we're ready to install this. We'll take our lock washer and install it on our replacement speed knob here and we'll install it at the end of the shank like so. Then we'll take our wedge and we'll just start to screw it in on the inside. You see the cutout here, you want to make sure that the wedge fits along that area. Here's the end of our speed knob so we'll just match them up, just start threading it in so it catches.

Now we can place it into our vehicle, slide it into our trailer hitch and go by the normal installation procedures for this bike rack. Now we'll go into the end here and tighten down our new knob. As we tighten it down, you'll notice that the shake and play has gone away which means it's working properly. All right, it looks like we're ready to go, we'll lock it into place so it's secure in the vehicle and now we can load up some bikes. There you have it for the replacement speed knob and wedge assembly part number 8880508.

A good replacement part for our bike ra ck.

by:

Perfect match for the original that I had to replace. Getting lock with just one key is a minus. Bike racks go on cars, cars come with two fobs. Good to have a spare.

by:

Great. It took me ordering this new item for the missing item to show up. I will likely hold on to this piece longer than I have the bike rack forgetting what I purchased it for but that it cost me to have it replaced.

by:

Great communication!! Fast Shipping!! T hanks!!!

by:

Misled. Sure, the ad shows (sold separately) for the lock core down in the description.

However, the image of the key with the lock in the product combined with the owners manual showing that the lock core and keys are indeed part of the package drives this to a 1 star. History shows I’m not the only one. Just include the lock core and keys in the package, as the instructions you sent me show.

by:

Ordered the replacement knob and wedge. Short install video was extremely helpful. Took all of 3 minutes to install. Saved having to purchase a new Yakima rack. Fit perfectly.

Oh, so my issue wasn’t that the old metal piece that goes into the hitch was stripped, rather that the red wedge mechanism wouldn’t engage the shaft, eg it spinned endlessly without loosening or tightening. So to remove I had to twist the shaft with a pair of pliers to unthread the existing shaft. (Included this comment in case it helps someone)

by:

This Yakima OEM replacement speedknob arrived ahead of scheduled delivery time. Perfect timing for my 4th of July bike ride! Same price as Yakima's website but with less expensive shipping options. The installation video on their website is the icing on the cake. I will definitely order again from ETrailer!

by:

We love how etraler easy it was to order the part from etrailer and get it quickly.

We have traveled all over the country and love its versatility of the bike rack. But the Yakima SpeedKnob placement could use some redesign. It is designed to be too low - below the Trailer hitch. No matter what vehicle the bike rack is on SpeedKnob wedge will bottom out when backing out of steep driveways or curbs thus damaging the wedge. This is our 2nd replacement in 18 months.

by:

I bought wrong part for my bike rack. When I requested an exchange I got a phone call (!) from etrailer setting up exchange. Now we're back on the trails.

by:

This is the third time that I have had occasion to use etrailer since I purchased a bike rack for my car a number of years ago. Each time the service is great--the website is easy to use, the goods are reasonably priced and they get to me in just a few days. In this case, I needed a new Speedknob and wedge assembly used to tighten my Yakima Ridgeback bike rack into my hitch (the old one stripped out). I got it quickly and once again, I'm ready for another spring of bike riding.

Great—I just put the bike rack on the car getting ready for the spring and all is fine.

by:

Easy install for an older rusted assemb ly

by:

This part in the construction of the bike rack is difficult to put in properly, therefore quite time-consuming. We try to leave the bike rack on as much as possible because of knowing how this piece Is, when attaching. I am looking for a new bike rack to attach to our vehicle because of this Part.

by:

Bravo eTrailer.com! Your video (link below) provided great instructions for installing the Replacement SpeedKnob and Wedge Assembly. I had to unlock the lock before I could remove the lock body from the old assembly.

by:

Fast shipping and spare part was hard to find but available here. Will shop here again!

by:

I really enjoy the customer service at etrailer.
There was a slight mixup on my order but etrailer sent the part out right away, no questions ask.

Great

by:

I bought a used Full Swing Rack that was missing a few parts. The Yakima Website was out of them all (and according to other reviews on their site, had been so for several months), and Yakima didn't have a date on when they expected to get them in. etrailer had the parts available (with one exception).

I thought this was going to be a knockoff SpeedKnob, but it is a genuine Yakima product. As such, it fits perfectly. It it super easy to add a lock tumbler and install on the hitch rack.

by:

I backed up into a very high curb and broke the knob on my bike rack. All that I needed was a new lockable knob for a Yakima HighLite, 2-bike rack. The only one available for that particular rack comes as part of a Replacement Mast with Anti-Rattle Knob and Adapter Sleeve, I thought that instead I would try the Replacement SpeedKnob and Wedge Assembly and see if it would work. I am pleased to say that it does! I was able to take both apart, the interior knob parts are the same, so I was able to just use the new knob on the old rack and save

Great products and service from etrailer!

by:

When I recieved this replacement part I was surprised because it was different than the original component. It did not have the expansion wing nut at the base. However I soon discovered that this piece was better than the original. I am able to attach and remove the rack without fear of stripping the part. Plus it arrived quickly in time for our trip to the beach.

  • Installation of the Yakima Swing Daddy Replacement Speed Knob and Wedge
The Speed Knob replacement # 8880508 for your Yakima SwingDaddy will require removing the wedge and then inserting the threaded screw in the interior. It will be the same basic installation as the RidgeBack model you mentioned. To get the play out of the rack, you will slightly lift and lower the shank of your bike rack as you tighten the speed knob. Any of the small movement that is taken out at install will give you a more stable connection for less play in the receiver.

  • Troubleshooting Stuck Hitch Pin in Yakima Bike Rack
Hey Michael, if the rack is off the vehicle I would pour some gear oil into a small pan and then put the end of the bike rack under the oil (submerged) and leave it sit for a day and that should hopefully work the rust loose enough to allow it to thread out. If on the vehicle still spray the hitch pin with WD40 every few hours and try tapping on it with a hammer to get the oil to start working. You'll basically need to keep repeating this till it loosens up. If there's no plastic nearby...

  • Yakima Ridgeback 4 Still Wobbly In Hitch After Tightening Hand Knob
Hello Naveena, thanks for reaching out. Tightening the speed knob should be enough to prevent any excessive movement in the hitch. Is the knob tightening at all? Or do you have it hand tight and it is still too wobbly? One thing you can do is have someone lift up slightly on the rack while you tighten the knob. Have them try to wiggle the rack up and side to side to see if it can be moved into a position where the speed knob can be tightened additionally. If you can get it tightened down...

  • Troubleshooting Issue with the Yakima FullSwing 4
I have a troubleshooting solution for you. One of the most common problems we see with the red locking knob Yakima FullSwing 4 Bike Rack # Y02465 is that the lock needs to be unlocked before engaging with the knob. If that doesn't work, sometimes the threads can become rusted/corroded and may not engage even when the knob is in the "unlocked" position.
