Question:

Would there be safety issues if I didn't have that part? Would the hitch/rack still be secure without it? I ask this because this missing part seems to relate only to the keying system.

I went ahead and confirmed with my contact at Yakima that it is unsafe to use the Yakima RidgeBack # Y02457 without the SpeedKnob and Wedge Assembly for Yakima Bike Racks # 8880508. Since the mechanism helps secure the rack to the hitch, it could fall off the vehicle without the assembly.
