Video Transcript for Yakima Hitch Bike Racks 8880612 Review

Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the two-inch shank adapter for the Yakima Ridgeback or FullTilt bike rack. This adapter kit converts the inch-and-a-quarter shank on your Yakima Ridgeback or FullTilt bike rack, manufactured after November 2015, for use with a two-inch hitch receiver. So, if your Yakima Ridgeback or FullTilt rack was manufactured before November of 2015, you'll need part number 8890298. It's available at etrailer.com. Now, when it comes to the Yakima Ridgeback bike racks, it's gonna fit model numbers Y02458, Y02457, or Y02459. For the FullTilt bike racks, it fits model numbers Y02463 or Y02462. The kit's gonna come with your adapter, which is aluminum.

It's gonna come with your steel wedge spacer, and it's gonna come with the necessary mounting bolts and the necessary hex wrenches to get everything installed. This is the configuration of how the unit would install in the shank of the rack. That gets placed on there. Now all the holes are gonna line up perfectly with the holes on the shank. The large bolt right here inserts into the large hole. You use the large hex wrench to get that installed.

The two small ones- One installs here on the top. The other one installs right here, on the side, and you use the smaller hex wrench to tighten everything down. That's gonna do it for today's look at the two-inch shank adapter for the Yakima Ridgeback or FullTilt bike racks.

Bought a used Yakima rack that didn't have the 2" shank adapter and needed one of these. Worked perfect and good construction. When it arrived, it was missing the 4mm allen wrench, but not a big deal. And way better than the Yakima $30 price tag! 410933

The product came to me just exactly as it was shown online. Took it from the mail to installation in just a few minutes. Solved my problem for my bike rack mounting to my car! Couldn't be more pleased. Thanks etrailer! 405605

This item worked perfectly for our Ridge Rack 4 (which was missing the small metal cube to tighten the 2" adapter). So, rather than fabricate one, I was able to buy one at etrailer for a good price. It was quite a bit cheaper than other online stores. The item came more quickly than I expected and was just what I needed. Thanks etrailer! Great job! 402253

Ask the Experts about this Yakima Accessories and Parts

  • How To Replace Lost Key for the SpeedKnob On a Yakima Bike Rack
I do have an option for you but the SpeedKnob is not something that you can just replace with a standard hitch pin lock. The SpeedKnob serves two purposes, to lock the bike rack inside the receiver tube and to wedge the shank against the inside of the receiver tube for anti-sway purposes. If you do not have the key for the SpeedKnob but it is unlocked then you can just use the control key, part # Y8007835 to remove the lock core and get the key number on the side. You can then order...

  • Which Adapter to Use for a Yakima Ridgeback or FullTilt Bike Rack
To determine whether you need the 2" Shank Adapter # 8890298 (prior to November 2015) or # 8880612 (after November 2015) you simply need to measure the holes at the end of the shank which the adapter fits over. If you have an older version bike rack then they use M8 bolts that measure 8mm - 9mm, but the newer bike racks use M6 bolts which measure 6mm - 7mm. Just measure those holes in the shank and you will know which adapter to order. Please note that these adapters are for the Yakima...

  • Replacement Locking Hitch Pin For Yakima Bike Rack
You'll need the Yakima # Y07235 hitch pin. From what I can tell, it looks like that's the only thing that's missing from your rack.

  • Replacement 2 inch Hitch Adapter Recommendation for Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack
I really wish I could get you that info but the best option we have is the part # 8880612 which is the new screws, and the 2 inch hitch adapter. The unique screws wouldn't be found at a hardware store and Yakima won't give out the specs on them as they are proprietary.

  • Replacement Parts for Yakima Ridgeback 4 or 5 Bike Carrier
I reached out to my contact at Yakima and the change made to the Ridgeback in November 2015 was most noticeably made to the cradles. The older style cradle had a gray button to release the zip strips and the newer style has a black button for the zip strips, so that is the easiest way to tell which ones you need. Here are the parts you requested: (pre-Nov. 2015) or (post-Nov. 2015) where required Replacement SpeedKnob and Wedge Assembly for Yakima Bike Racks # 8880508 2 inch shank...

  • How Should 1-1/4 to 2 Inch Adapter On Yakima RidgeBack 4 Look
I have added a couple of photos showing how the adapter should look on your Yakima RidgeBack 4 Bike Rack # Y02458, and as you can see it should be flush. If the adapter piece is sticking out you should be able to tighten it so it does sit flush, or you may need a new adapter, as it is possible yours got potentially damaged along the way, or maybe one of the screws did. Since you mentioned yours was about 4 years old you have a couple possible options for the correct adapter: - 2"...

  • Differences Between Yakima Shank Adapters
The only difference between adapter # 8890298 for Rigebacks manufactured before 2015 and # 8880612 for Ridgebacks manufactured after 2015 are the bolt sizes. Shank adapter # 8890298 uses M6 bolts while # 8880612 uses the slightly larger M8 bolts.

  • Replacement Parts for Yakima RidgeBack 2 Bike Rack
Your Yakima RidgeBack 2 Bike Rack # Y02457 uses a SpeedKnob that tightens the rack inside your trailer hitch receiver. Before removing the hitch pin and the bike rack, you will need to turn and loosen this knob so the shank can slide out of the receiver. To help with removing the red 2 inch adapter from the shank, you can try manipulating the SpeedKnob on the front of the rack while you try to remove the silver and red pieces. You should be able to free up these pieces so they can easily...

  • How to Determine the Correct Shank Adapter for a Yakima Ridgeback
To correctly identify the correct shank adapter for your Yakima Ridgeback, part # Y02457, you'll need to measure the holes at the end of the shank that the adapter will go over. The adapter holes for the older racks made before November 2005 are sized for M8 bolts. They should measure about 8 to 9 millimeters in diameter, and you'll use part # 8880612 for your rack. If it measures smaller, about 6 to 7 millimeters, then you've got a rack made after November 2005 and you'll want...
