Ridgeback Hitch Pin Diagram

Note: This dual-arm rack reduces the need for a bike frame adapter bar (sold separately) to mount a children's, women's, or alternative frame bicycle. However, to mount certain bikes or to keep your bike level on the rack, a bike adapter bar may be required. Most step-through bikes, dual-suspension bikes, and small children's bikes will require a bike adapter bar.

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack Loaded

The sturdy, hitch-mounted Yakima Ridgeback lets you transport 5 bikes on the back of your vehicle. The rack has dual arms that offer excellent bike support and anti-sway cradles with ZipStrip ratcheting cradle straps for quick and easy bike loading. The mast tilts away from your vehicle for cargo area access. And installation is tool-free with an integrated anti-rattle device that locks the rack to your vehicle.

Folding Dual Support Arms

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack Dual Foldable Arms

The Ridgeback's dual arms offer excellent bike support.

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack Arms Fold Down Visual

And they fold down flat against the mast for parking clearance and compact storage. To fold them down, pull the grey TriggerFinger control lever on top of the mast. When you're ready to load bikes again, simply lift the arms back up until they lock into place with an audible click.

Anti-Sway Cradles with Ratcheting ZipStrip Straps

Yakima RidgeBack 2 Bike Rack Anti Sway Craddles

The RidgeBack has anti-sway cradles that grip your bike frame at 3 different points - twice along the top bar and once along a downward bar, such as a seat post. This third point of contact helps to prevent sway and bike-to-bike contact.

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack Ratchet Straps Visual

Ratcheting ZipStrips let you quickly and easily secure your bikes in the cradles. These straps require none of the tugging and stretching that conventional straps require. Simply insert the strap into the buckles on the cradle, and push it down until it's snug around your bike frame. The ZipStrips can be removed quickly by pressing the release levers on the sides of each anti-sway cradle.

A layer of TPE padding on each cradle absorbs road shock and minimizes vibrations.

Tool-Free Installation with SpeedKnob

Yakima RidgeBack 2 Bike Rack SpeedKnob Tighten with Anti Rattle

The Ridgeback has an integrated SpeedKnob that allows tool-free installation. The knob controls an anti-rattle wedge on the shank. Simply turn the knob to tighten the bike rack shank in your hitch receiver. This not only secures the rack to your vehicle, but also reduces noise and movement of the rack in your hitch. An included hitch pin is attached to the bike rack shank with a lanyard so you won't lose it.

The rack works with both 1-1/4" and 2" hitches. To use it in a 1-1/4" hitch, simply remove the red adapter and wedge extension with the included Allen key.

Easy Access to Rear Cargo Area

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack Rear Cargo Access

The Ridgeback's mast tilts so you won't need to remove the rack for rear hatch clearance. And the UpperHand control lever is conveniently located near the top of the mast, so you won't need to bend over to reach a lever or pin at the base of the rack.

Bike Rack Security

Yakima RidgeBack locking SpeedKnob

The SpeedKnob includes a Yakima Same Key System (SKS) lock core. This lock prevents a would-be thief from being able to loosen the knob and remove the rack from your hitch. Add a HandCuff cable lock (Y02466 - sold separately) to secure your bikes to the rack.

SKS cores can be swapped out if you own other Yakima products and want to use the same key to lock them all.

Compact Storage

Yakima Ridgeback 5 Bike Rack Lays Flat for Easy Storage

The RidgeBack easily folds flat for compact storage. Use the TriggerFinger control lever to fold the arms down. Then use the UpperHand lever to fold up the shank.

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Bottle Openers

The RidgeBack includes 2 built-in, machined-steel bottle openers in case your beverage of choice doesn't have a twist-off cap.

This bike rack is great, I have only installed it and plan to use it more in the spring. But, it is very easy to install. It comes fully assembled, just pull the levers to unfold, plug it in and tighten it down. It seems very well made and durable. Thank you! 322433

The Yakima rack is great. Very solid and easy to use. It takes me a few minutes to mount it. 5 bikes ride just fine.

Fantastic! We love the Yakima bike rack, have used it multiple times since purchase, including on a 600-mile round trip. Met all of my expectations. Bikes move a little, and at first it was disconcerting. But even over large bumps at 70+ mph there was no evidence of any shifting of the load, and the bikes remained secure. It is quite difficult to fit 5 bikes (2 adult and 3 children's bikes) on the bike rack, but with some creativity I was able to make it happen. I can't imagine how you would fit 5 adult bikes on here, however. Overall I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. Great service from the folks at eTrailer.com as well! I received the package within 3 days of purchase (at 3 pm in the afternoon, no less!). 150267

I have owned this bike rack for one year. I has travelled thousands of miles on the back of multiple vehicles hauling usually two adult bikes or two adult and two youth bikes. Getting five bikes on here is not really possible for bikes with wide handlebars and standard pedals. The rack is still in very good shape and is easy to store and install. The tilt function allows the empty rack to move out of the way of the SUV hatch opening. 403903

have being sold my old 4 bike rack and with additional riders graduating to bigger bikers among our ranks (we have 4 kids) it was needed to upgrade to this unit. Easy to install and better system than the old wobble bolt that i had to drag a wrench instead of the knob now a days! it's a tight for 5 bikes but doable! recommended 389591

I was grateful to so many others who wrote reviews on this website and praised the customer service. I was looking for a trailer to haul 5 bikes including womens and kids bikes and have it work on my husbands Jeep wrangler, my daughters Subaru Outback, occasionally an RV and mainly my Toyota Sienna that doesn't even have a hitch yet. With so many options online and seemingly different products for each one, I wanted help to know if there was any product that could help me meet all me needs, so I decided to call Etrailer and get some help. They were amazing just like everyone said! He recommend the Yakima Ridgeback which would meet all our different hitch needs and the best selling Kuat Ubar adaptor bars that would make it work for our women's and kids bikes and different hitch needs. And the best surprise of all is that he told me they even carried hitch packages for my Toyota! I hadn't even expected that. The quote I received from my Toyota dealer for installing a hitch was going to cost me over $1000! But Etrailer sent me one for under $200! I am excited to get our whole family out biking more together this summer and thanks to etrailer we got everything we needed and all shipped to Alaska for only a hundred bucks in less than 2 weeks! The man on the phone explained how my husband could install the hitch himself, but after looking at it yesterday, he decided to take it to a local shop where they can raise the whole car for the install. But that will still be cheaper than what I thought I would have to pay before. We are planning to get the hitch on our van this week and try out the bike trailer by the weekend. Thanks for everything etrailer!! 396130

Works great on our Subarus. We've had 5 bikes on it a few times! TWO 20" bmx bikes, ONE 24" girls mountain bike, TWO 26" Mountains bikes for me n wife... It was a tight fit, a few scratches from bikes rubbing against each other, but it is doable! I'd recommend it for anyone that needs a good strong carrier. 705920

Like recent reviews i did my homework to find the concerns that prior purchasers had about the product. 1 was that the bike rack would move all over the place as if it was going to break. While driving that concern passed the test. 2 difficulty for 5 bike install, buy the bike adapter bars they help and are necessary, very easy to install rack and bikes if done correctly. I am very satisfied with the bike rack and would recommend. our first trip was 700 miles round trip on a truck 4x4 very bumpy compared to regular trucks and cars so it passed the double beating. 403692

Rack is very easy to install and remove, and fits well with no rattle in the 2" receiver. Loading bikes is easy and it will, indeed, hold 5 bikes with relatively little effort. The only negatives I have are 1) Unless I use Yakima's custom locking cable for this rack, there is no good way to lock bicycles to the rack 2) It wasn't clear to me that I would need adapter bars (8002531) for kids bikes. I've always managed to get them on my older racks, but not the Yakima. I suspect that most modern racks would need these bars. Overall, very satisfied. 225929

Review from a similar Yakima RidgeBack in Hitch Bike Racks

I was pretty disappointed with this rack from Yakima. Assembly was straightforward and the rack seems well made, but it did not meet my expectations as far as performance. I loaded up 2 bikes, a light road bike and a moderately heavy hybrid and drove for a few hours. The road bike flailed around on the rack despite being properly secured, and I ended up with scratches on the frame. For the drive home I switched locations of the bikes and tried to protect the road bike, but ended up with new scratches anyways. I would NOT recommend this rack if you have a lightweight bike, are concerned about dinging your frame, or if you drive a sedan (maybe the airflow around an SUV would be less of an issue?). If you've got heavier bikes and you don't mind them taking a bit of a beating, this product is probably adequate. 670545

got the bike rack super fast. Had a ton of questions beforehand and etrailer staff were very responsive. The bike rack seems durable and does fit tightly in the hitch. My only concern is the obvious swaying of the bikes when they are attached to the rack - i expected them to not sway as much. We take it on our long bike trip this weekend so we will see what happens. Love that it locks into the hitch 227525

Review from a similar Yakima RidgeBack in Hitch Bike Racks

The rack installs easily with good instructions. It is still a little heavy for me to put in my Subaru Crosstrek (I am 68), but it is manageable. We used this heavier rack since we sometimes put on our electric bikes for short distances. They are at the heavy end of the weight limits, but should work OK. Unlike the last car I had (Subaru forester), we don't want to keep the rack on the car unless we need to use it. The rack was delivered slower than expected. The web site said it was in stock, but there apparently was an issue with the availability. The customer service team kept me well apprised of the shipment status. 543204

I liked this rack for normal shaped adult bikes. Unfortunatley, kid bikes and several full suspension bikes are difficult or impossible to fit on this rack. It is also difficult to fit 4 bikes on the rack that are different shapes. Hindsight, I woud have gotten a tire mount rear bike rack instead. 388041

Review from a similar Yakima RidgeBack in Hitch Bike Racks

We used this bike rack on our vacation to Atlantic Beach NC. For 2 senior citizens, we made out pretty well. The bikes had a pleasant ride, no dings, no dents, no spinning tires! We carried them on the back of a GMC pickup with a camper top. The tilt down feature allowed us to open the tailgate completely with the bikes still on the rack. The only thing we would want to improve is the weight. At 32 pounds it was hard for us to mount on the hitch, but we were able to get a young neighbor to help us. It is very well built and I would definitely recommend this rack to our friends. 575098

Review from a similar Yakima RidgeBack in Hitch Bike Racks

The bicycle rack was delivered today. After much trial and error I finally got it together and functioning properly. The instructions are little help and I only achieved success after calling Yakima customer service for assistance. On a purely cosmetic issue, the Yakima decal is already half gone. If I were the manufacturer I would like my name ( logo ) applied more permanently. After all the trials and tribulations, the bike rack is first class. To bad the same can't be said for the instructions. 227058

Review from a similar Yakima RidgeBack in Hitch Bike Racks

Carried 2 bikes from North Texas to Northern Colorado on the back of a civic coupe, through high winds and mountain passes. This rack is very sturdy. It was a little tough to get out of the hitch receiver the first time, very snug fit. I now need to get a hitch receiver on my Miata so that I can continue to use this rack. 564726

  • Most Versatile Hitch Mounted Bike Rack for Use with Multiple Different Types of Bikes
The most amount of bikes you can carry on a hitch mounted bike rack is five with a hanging bike rack like the Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack part # Y02459. However, a hanging bike rack like the above is not your most versatile option because it will require an adapter bar like the Yakima Tube Top Bike Adapter Bar part # Y02531 for bikes with an alternative frame which are pretty common. The most versatile option is a platform bike rack but this will only allow you to carry up to four bikes. Out...

You are correct that a light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I hitch like # 24848 has a 200-lb tongue weight (TW) capacity. However, when it comes to bike racks there is another factor that comes into play, leverage on the hitch tube. The more bikes the rack holds the longer it tends to be, naturally. This increased distance from the hitch to the outermost bike translates into extreme leverage forces on the hitch tube, forces that would damage a light-duty Class I hitch. For this reason all Class...

Good news, you came to the right place, I can help you find the best 5-bike rack and hitch for your 2015 Honda Odyssey. First you are correct the weight capacity of the 2 inch Hidden hitch # 87479 and Draw-Tite # 75270 are superior to that of the Curt hitch, so either would be a good choice. Currently the Hidden hitch is no longer in production so the Draw-Tite model # 75270 is the best hitch for your Odyssey. I have linked an installation video of the install for your convenience....

  • What are the Arm Lengths of the Yakima RidgeBack 4 and 5 Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Racks
On the Yakima RidgeBack 4, # Y02458, the arms are 28 inches long overall. On the RidgeBack 5, # Y02459, the arms are 34 inches long overall. So you're looking at a 6 inch difference. If you only need to carry 4 bikes, it will be easier to load them on a 5-bike rack. I have linked video reviews of both racks for you.

  • How to Transport 5 Bikes on Vehicle Towed Behind Motorhome
When selecting a hitch bike rack the "host" vehicle matters a lot. Most bike racks made for use on passenger cars cannot be used on RVs. Why? On most RVs and trailers the rear hitch will be much further away from the rear axle than on a car. This longer axle-to-hitch distance means more leverage will be applied to the hitch tube from the motion of the rack. Think of the example of adding a cheater bar to a tire iron to gain more leverage to loosen a lug nut. We do offer 5-bike hitch...

  • Recommended Hitch Mounted Five Bike Carrier
The Yakima Doubledown Ace 5 carrier is being phased out, but we do have a couple of great Yakima 5-bike carriers that might work for you. As products become available we make every effort to add them to our website. I recommend the Yakima FullTilt 5-Bike Rack, part # Y02463. This rack holds 5 bikes and has a cable lock that secures the bikes to the carrier. This is a tilting rack that allows you access to the rear cargo area of your vehicle when unloaded. This will fit both 1-1/4 and...

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack that Allows Rear Hatch to Open on a 2006 Honda Odyssey
You will not be able to fold down the Yakima RidgeBack 5, # Y02459, with bikes loaded on it. We do have racks that swing out to the side of the vehicle with the bikes loaded for nearly complete access to the rear of the vehicle. I have included a link to these racks for you to view. Yakima has the FullSwing, # Y02465. I have included a link to a video showing how the rack works and another link to the instructions.

  • 4 or 5 Bike Rack Recommendation on 2015 Honda Odyssey
For your 2015 Honda Odyssey, I'd recommend a 5 bike hitch mounted rack so the entire family has the option to play together. If you don't have a trailer hitch, I'd recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Round Tube, # 75270, for your vehicle. I've attached a video for your reference. A great choice for your bike rack would be the Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack, # Y02459. It will fit a 1-1/4 or a 2 inch hitch and has some great options to make it easy to use. It has anti-sway cradles...

  • What 5 Bike Hitch Bike Racks Are Available To Fit A 2007 Mercedes Benz GL450
I have a few hitch bike racks that will carry 5 bikes that I would recommend. The Thule Apex XT 5 Bike Rack, part # TH9026XT, will fit a Class III 2 inch hitch and has a weight capacity of 150 lbs. The Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack, part # Y02459, will fit Class II 1-1/4 inch hitch and Class III 2 inch hitch. It has a weight capacity of 150 lbs. Both the Thule and The Yakima have anti-sway cradles that prevent bike-to-bike contact. The Swagman XP 5 Bike Rack, part # S64970, is...

  • Compatible Bike Rack for 2015 Toyota Highlander w/ Factory Hitch
I'm assuming your Highlander has the Class II factory hitch that has a shallower depth than usually found in a Class II hitch. A few months ago, Yakima updated the shank of their RidgeBack bike racks so they have two pin holes which would allow them to seat more fully in the Class II factory hitches found on Subaru and Toyota vehicles. The distance from the face of the receiver to the center of the hitch pin hole cannot be less than 1-1/2 inches. The FullSwing/SwingDaddy racks are...

  • Recommended Cargo Carrier And 5 Bike Hitch Mounted Bike Rack To Be Used Simultaniously
For a 5 bike rack, I recommend the Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Tilting # Y02459. This is a very nice carrier weighing only 35.5 lbs and able to carry 5 bikes at a total capacity of 150 lbs. I also recommend using the cable lock # Y02466 with this option to secure your bikes to the rack. This bike rack is your best option for use with a cargo carrier when using the correct adapter. You are not able to use a cargo carrier in the manner you mentioned, so I...

  • Recommendation For Hitch and 5-Bike Hitch Bike Rack to Fit 2008 Volvo XC90
The hitch I would recommend for your 2008 Volvo XC90 is the Draw-Tite Class III 2-Inch Hitch, part # 75152. This hitch has a tongue weight capacity of 500 lbs. I am including a link to an install video of this hitch on a 2010 Volvo XC90. For a 5-bike hitch bike rack on your XC90 I would recommend the Yakima RidgeBack 5-Bike Rack, part Y02459, or the Thule Vertex 5-Bike Rack, part # TH9030XT. These are our two most popular 5-bike racks. The Yakima is a little less expensive than the Thule,...
