Ridgeback Hitch Pin Diagram

Note: This dual-arm rack reduces the need for a bike frame adapter bar (sold separately) to mount a children's, women's, or alternative frame bicycle. However, to mount certain bikes or to keep your bike level on the rack, a bike adapter bar may be required. Most step-through bikes, dual-suspension bikes, and small children's bikes will require a bike adapter bar.

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack Loaded

The sturdy, hitch-mounted Yakima Ridgeback lets you transport 5 bikes on the back of your vehicle. The rack has dual arms that offer excellent bike support and anti-sway cradles with ZipStrip ratcheting cradle straps for quick and easy bike loading. The mast tilts away from your vehicle for cargo area access. And installation is tool-free with an integrated anti-rattle device that locks the rack to your vehicle.

Folding Dual Support Arms

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack Dual Foldable Arms

The Ridgeback's dual arms offer excellent bike support.

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack Arms Fold Down Visual

And they fold down flat against the mast for parking clearance and compact storage. To fold them down, pull the grey TriggerFinger control lever on top of the mast. When you're ready to load bikes again, simply lift the arms back up until they lock into place with an audible click.

Anti-Sway Cradles with Ratcheting ZipStrip Straps

Yakima RidgeBack 2 Bike Rack Anti Sway Craddles

The RidgeBack has anti-sway cradles that grip your bike frame at 3 different points - twice along the top bar and once along a downward bar, such as a seat post. This third point of contact helps to prevent sway and bike-to-bike contact.

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack Ratchet Straps Visual

Ratcheting ZipStrips let you quickly and easily secure your bikes in the cradles. These straps require none of the tugging and stretching that conventional straps require. Simply insert the strap into the buckles on the cradle, and push it down until it's snug around your bike frame. The ZipStrips can be removed quickly by pressing the release levers on the sides of each anti-sway cradle.

A layer of TPE padding on each cradle absorbs road shock and minimizes vibrations.

Tool-Free Installation with SpeedKnob

Yakima RidgeBack 2 Bike Rack SpeedKnob Tighten with Anti Rattle

The Ridgeback has an integrated SpeedKnob that allows tool-free installation. The knob controls an anti-rattle wedge on the shank. Simply turn the knob to tighten the bike rack shank in your hitch receiver. This not only secures the rack to your vehicle, but also reduces noise and movement of the rack in your hitch. An included hitch pin is attached to the bike rack shank with a lanyard so you won't lose it.

The rack works with both 1-1/4" and 2" hitches. To use it in a 1-1/4" hitch, simply remove the red adapter and wedge extension with the included Allen key.

Easy Access to Rear Cargo Area

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack Rear Cargo Access

The Ridgeback's mast tilts so you won't need to remove the rack for rear hatch clearance. And the UpperHand control lever is conveniently located near the top of the mast, so you won't need to bend over to reach a lever or pin at the base of the rack.

Bike Rack Security

Yakima RidgeBack locking SpeedKnob

The SpeedKnob includes a Yakima Same Key System (SKS) lock core. This lock prevents a would-be thief from being able to loosen the knob and remove the rack from your hitch. Add a HandCuff cable lock (Y02466 - sold separately) to secure your bikes to the rack.

SKS cores can be swapped out if you own other Yakima products and want to use the same key to lock them all.

Compact Storage

Yakima Ridgeback 5 Bike Rack Lays Flat for Easy Storage

The RidgeBack easily folds flat for compact storage. Use the TriggerFinger control lever to fold the arms down. Then use the UpperHand lever to fold up the shank.

Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Bottle Openers

The RidgeBack includes 2 built-in, machined-steel bottle openers in case your beverage of choice doesn't have a twist-off cap.

it is nice and easy. but over the year it binds a bit but that could be my fault due to lack of caring for it. when i put 4 bikes of different sizes on it it can be difficult. just need to be aware of were the pedels are and removing a front tire or 2 helps.

- Y02459
by:

Everything works as it should. Hard to get multiple bikes with drop-down handlebars immediately adjacent to each other on the rack, but no problem getting them all on there with kids bikes in the middle.

- Y02459
by:

Rack is very easy to install and remove, and fits well with no rattle in the 2" receiver. Loading bikes is easy and it will, indeed, hold 5 bikes with relatively little effort. The only negatives I have are 1) Unless I use Yakima's custom locking cable for this rack, there is no good way to lock bicycles to the rack 2) It wasn't clear to me that I would need adapter bars (8002531) for kids bikes. I've always managed to get them on my older racks, but not the Yakima. I suspect that most modern racks would need these bars. Overall, very satisfied.

Fantastic! We love the Yakima bike rack, have used it multiple times since purchase, including on a 600-mile round trip. Met all of my expectations. Bikes move a little, and at first it was disconcerting. But even over large bumps at 70+ mph there was no evidence of any shifting of the load, and the bikes remained secure. It is quite difficult to fit 5 bikes (2 adult and 3 children's bikes) on the bike rack, but with some creativity I was able to make it happen. I can't imagine how you would fit 5 adult bikes on here, however. Overall I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. Great service from the folks at eTrailer.com as well! I received the package within 3 days of purchase (at 3 pm in the afternoon, no less!).

This Yakima 5 bike rack is exactly what I needed. It's very easy to mount and very sturdy.

Comments
The Yakima rack is great. Very solid and easy to use. It takes me a few minutes to mount it. 5 bikes ride just fine.

I have owned this bike rack for one year. I has travelled thousands of miles on the back of multiple vehicles hauling usually two adult bikes or two adult and two youth bikes. Getting five bikes on here is not really possible for bikes with wide handlebars and standard pedals. The rack is still in very good shape and is easy to store and install. The tilt function allows the empty rack to move out of the way of the SUV hatch opening.

Like recent reviews i did my homework to find the concerns that prior purchasers had about the product. 1 was that the bike rack would move all over the place as if it was going to break. While driving that concern passed the test. 2 difficulty for 5 bike install, buy the bike adapter bars they help and are necessary, very easy to install rack and bikes if done correctly. I am very satisfied with the bike rack and would recommend. our first trip was 700 miles round trip on a truck 4x4 very bumpy compared to regular trucks and cars so it passed the double beating.

I was grateful to so many others who wrote reviews on this website and praised the customer service. I was looking for a trailer to haul 5 bikes including womens and kids bikes and have it work on my husbands Jeep wrangler, my daughters Subaru Outback, occasionally an RV and mainly my Toyota Sienna that doesn't even have a hitch yet. With so many options online and seemingly different products for each one, I wanted help to know if there was any product that could help me meet all me needs, so I decided to call Etrailer and get some help. They were amazing just like everyone said! He recommend the Yakima Ridgeback which would meet all our different hitch needs and the best selling Kuat Ubar adaptor bars that would make it work for our women's and kids bikes and different hitch needs. And the best surprise of all is that he told me they even carried hitch packages for my Toyota! I hadn't even expected that. The quote I received from my Toyota dealer for installing a hitch was going to cost me over $1000! But Etrailer sent me one for under $200! I am excited to get our whole family out biking more together this summer and thanks to etrailer we got everything we needed and all shipped to Alaska for only a hundred bucks in less than 2 weeks! The man on the phone explained how my husband could install the hitch himself, but after looking at it yesterday, he decided to take it to a local shop where they can raise the whole car for the install. But that will still be cheaper than what I thought I would have to pay before. We are planning to get the hitch on our van this week and try out the bike trailer by the weekend. Thanks for everything etrailer!!

have being sold my old 4 bike rack and with additional riders graduating to bigger bikers among our ranks (we have 4 kids) it was needed to upgrade to this unit. Easy to install and better system than the old wobble bolt that i had to drag a wrench instead of the knob now a days! it's a tight for 5 bikes but doable! recommended

- Y02459
by:

Works great on our Subarus. We've had 5 bikes on it a few times! TWO 20" bmx bikes, ONE 24" girls mountain bike, TWO 26" Mountains bikes for me n wife... It was a tight fit, a few scratches from bikes rubbing against each other, but it is doable! I'd recommend it for anyone that needs a good strong carrier.

- Y02459
by:

Love it. Super easy to install, and ready to go right out of the box. Fits my kids bikes as well as mine. The tilt feature is easy to use, and the unit doesn’t feel too heavy, so anyone can use it. I was a bit concerned the width of the rack would block my back up camera view, but I can still see around it well enough, at least on my Kia Telluride.

- Y02459

This bike rack is great, I have only installed it and plan to use it more in the spring. But, it is very easy to install. It comes fully assembled, just pull the levers to unfold, plug it in and tighten it down. It seems very well made and durable. Thank you!

Ask the Experts about this Yakima Hitch Bike Racks

  • Will the Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack fit a Class III Curt Trailer Hitch?
The specs of the Yakima Ridgeback # Y02459 does require a minimum distance of 1-1/2 inches the center pinhole to the face of the hitch opening. I contacted Curt and they confirmed that your hitch has a distance of 2-1/2 inches from the center pinhole to the face of the hitch opening, so you are good to go! Also, the distance from center of hitch pin hole to closest part of the Yakima Ridgeback # Y02459 is 9-1/2 inches, so it will give you plenty of clearance to extend beyond that back...

  • Hitch-Mounted 5 Bike Carrier Compatible With Flat-Towing
The Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Tilting # Y02459 is compatible with flat-towing and can hold 5 bikes, so you won't have an issue with that. The weight capacity is 150lbs or 40lbs when only 1 bike is mounted. The carrier comes with anti-sway cradles to keep the bikes tight and secured. There is an integrated lock to secure the carrier to the receiver; to lock the bikes to the carrier I recommend adding Yakima HandCuff Cable Lock # Y02466. In regard to your vehicle's...

  • Best 5-Bike Rack for a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that Allows Rear Door Clearance
To mount 5 bikes to the hitch of a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, I recommend the Yakima RidgeBack, part # Y02459. It fits 1-1/4" and 2" hitches and can support 5 bikes up to 40 pounds each (up to 150 pounds total). It has an anti-rattle SpeedKnob. Like the other bike racks in this category, it has a tilt-away feature. However, none of these are likely to tilt away far enough to clear your swing-out hatch door. Unfortunately, we do not have a way around this as an extender would halve...

The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 306-X7194 as you said has a 300 lb. tongue weight limit and a 2" receiver tube opening. With that in mind the Yakima RidgeBack 5 Bike Rack part # Y02459 will work out well. It weighs around 42 lbs. so you will be limited to carrying 158 lbs. of bikes at max. if your 2016 Prius C is rated for that. You want to ensure not to exceed the 300 lbs. tongue weight capacity of your hitch or the maximin tongue weight limit of your Prius which...

  • Troubleshooting Yakima Ridgeback Anti-Rattle Knob that Won't Tighten
The anti-rattle device/locking device of the Yakima Ridgeback bike racks like the part # Y02459 that you referenced are basically combined and if the anti-rattle is unlocked that knob is disconnected from the anti-rattle and will spin freely. So what I would do is make sure you have tried locking the knob of the rack so that it is engaged and will tighten.

One solution that you might consider is the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack # HR1400Z-85 which gives you ability to use it as a 4 bike rack or a 2 bike rack plus a hitch cargo carrier. Since you have 5 riders though you might also consider a 5 bike rack like the Yakima Ridgeback 5 part # Y02459 and then a roof top cargo box for the extra cargo like the Yakima Skybox 16 part # Y07335. Then for the rear, you wouldn't have any direct bolt-on options but the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Service Body Trailer Hitch part # 41990-16 could be welded-on or bolted once drilled. I have a solution for you to use a Yakima Ridgeback like the # Y02459 on a 2-1/2" receiver, but there is not an actual adapter for the shank. Instead, you'll need to use a hitch reducer like the Blue Ox Hitch Reducer Sleeve - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch # BX88187 to reduce your 2-1/2" receiver down to a 2" receiver. This will allow you to carry the Ridgeback on your vehicle with the 2-1/2" receiver.

The hitch crosstube is concealed behind the bumper, the only visible portion of the hitch would be the receiver tube and he safety chain hooks. However, I don't advise it. As you can see from the photo I've attached, the bolts of the Thule Tram are not long enough to fit the base of the RidgeBack.
