Pick a hydraulic gauge that reads in 20-lb increments up to 1,000 lbs, or go digital for easier reading and capacities up to 4,000 lbs with 5-lb resolution. Check coupler height: fixed units sit at 17-1/4", adjustable versions cover 14-3/4" to 20-3/4", and some digital models fit 19-1/2" to 27". Use only on bumper pull trailers, and place on a hard, non-flexing surface or spacer.
Set the scale on a hard level surface and follow the directions. If a non-adjustable unit needs blocking, make sure it's stable. Some gauges are the most exposed part, so consider a protective cover to reduce damage risk. These scales are hydraulically operated, with no electronics or springs in the analog versions. Weigh, then rearrange cargo if needed to ensure proper tongue weight.

You can use a spacer or blocking as long as it's a hard flat surface that does not flex. Fixed-height analog options are about 17-1/4" and a SnapPad adds approximately 1". Adjustable analog scales cover about 14-3/4" to 20-3/4" in 2" steps, and B&W's digital covers 19-1/2" to 27".
